The trucks been seldom seen around here, but Allen Samuels Austin
just got tons of them in. Look nice to me

I saw a silver four door on the road the other day and it looked really good! Wish I couldve snapped a picture of it. Every new Dak I've seen so far had custom rims on it.

Silver is a bad memory for me. See a lot of dark grey Daks there
Going to be a predominat color maybe

people are'nt buying them around my neck of the woods. I've only seen one around town and it is a plain jane stripper. we worked on it in our bodyshop. It is so plain it even had a rear seat and belt delete.

huh? u can get them without rear seats and belts? thats dumb  :WHT:

I have only seen a handful on the street, I really don't think many people are buying them, the interior is nice and the new design is nice mechanically it is just kinda fugly.

I was surprised about the rear seat delete. I looked in side the extended cab to see how much rear seat room there was and to my surprise... no seat. I could see an owner taking the seat out but not the belts. One other thing I noticed on the truck was the crumple zone on the front frame section. It is replaceable,Ithought for ease of repair or just posibly a real easy way for DC to redesign the front of the truck, ( longer- shorter ect.)

I love this web site.
Here's a couple of pictures of my (05) ST Dakota. I have a list of things I plan to do with her. But here's a few pics before any upgrades.

Same color as mine gmaxx, but I have the quad cab.

They are starting to catch on in my area now, just took a little time to start seeing them. I've seen a couple of companies using them now as work trucks too, so i would imagine it just took a little time for people to accept the new styling. Personally I love it.

gmaxx
03-25-2005, 02:20 PM
Well I'll tell you this truck does grow on you. I really love it, but I got the 3.7 v6 and it could use a few more horses. After picking up some rims and sound system that high on my list. That is working on the engine to get a few more horses out of her.

Jeseth
03-25-2005, 02:47 PM
Heh, I have the 4.7 V8. I knew I'd want more power than I could get with the V6. I've maintained the factory radio thus far, but I did replace the speakers quickly. I'm hoping someone will come out with an adapter soon so I can plug my iPod into the factory radio, but if it doesn't happen soon I may be replacing it anyway.

I am hoping someone will come out with a tuner for the 4.7 though, because in initial acceleration it does feel slightly sluggish. I would imagine that could be corrected with some minor modification to the computer, but that has been my only complaint so far.

I think theres only been a handfull sold in my entire county because every time I go through any of the dealer lots, the same trucks are there week after week. I think I've only seen 2 on the road so far. A loaded Laramie and a stripper ST.

The interor is where these new trucks shine!! All the magazines can do is rip on the interior, and say that the exterior is sharp lookin....

gmaxx
03-25-2005, 11:03 PM
Hey Jeseth, who did you go to replace your speakers and did you stay with the factory size mounts fo them. That's high on my list of things along with a new sound system.

I saw a red, LIFTED 4x4 Dakota Quad Cab today at the beach and it was bad ass.... the first time I've seen one of the '05's with any mods done to it.

Jeseth
03-26-2005, 04:51 PM
I found some Polk speakers that I liked, and actually found them at a local Circuit City for the same price I could get them online. I got free installation so I let them do it, otherwise I would have just installed them myself.

I stayed with the factory 6 1/2's for now, and am happy with the results.

I haven't seen any with mods so far. I just had a spray-in liner and a soft tonneau cover put on mine, but I'm thinking I might add some nerf bars by the end of the year.

I'm kinda starting to like these Dakotas. You know, I kinda liked the truck when I first saw it, but now that I've seen one lifted, and several with aftermarket wheels and other upgrades, I think they really do look nice and they have a lot of potential. This is one of those designs that wasnt going to be an "instant hit". But it's growing on a lot of people apparently, because the Dakota sales are starting to increase.

Really the only recent DCX design that hasnt grown on me at all is the '04 and up Durango. Sure, it's probably the best full-sized SUV on the market, mechanically. But I just cannot get past the ugly front clip. :(

'Nother 05 owner checking in. (No pics yet, no digital camera and my film camera's a pain. I ought to borrow the work camera...) The day I went to pick up my truck was the first time I saw another 05 on the road, a red SLT QC. Since I got mine I've seen a black Laramie QC and a silver SLT QC too. I guess the sales are picking up, my salesman told me he sold a half-dozen in the last month.

2005 Dakota SLT CC - 4/7L 3.55 limited slip, 4x4, tow package, Flame Red

http://www.seven12.net/bear/Resize of redrover_d.jpg

Just hit 3000, first oil change tomorrow.

Had my doubts when I first took it off the lot, but this thing is pretty nice. Solid as a rock and totally silent at 75MPH on the interstate. I just came back from 4 days of rafting and two other truck owners - Chevy 1500 and Tacoma - drove it for shuttles, and both said they loved it.

Only complaints: lousy interior storage, so-so ground clearance, and my airbag light is on. That's warranty work, Tuesday. I'm getting around 14 in town and 18 or so on the highway - I'm dropping a K&N in, see if that helps the mileage at all.

I don't think they're ugly at all. Starting to see others around town - I think the redesign had a slow start but is starting to get some traction now.

 That's a pretty truck! I see you've been a DodgeTalk member since 2003, so I have to ask, what did you trade in on your new Dakota?

BigBear
05-19-2005, 07:19 PM
I traded in a 1997 Dakota SLT CC 5.2 4x4. It had 160K, some electrical issues and an aged transmission that was getting cranky in the cold weather. I hated to see it go but I also worried about it becoming a black hole - I had already sunk a couple thousand into the front end; ball joints, Pittman arm, stabilizer, idler arm, 7 alignments...

BigBear, you got a lot of miles out of that truck.... I had a much older ('93) Dakota with the 318 that I sold at around 180k miles... it ran for a while after I sold it, but the odometer stopped working so nobody knows exactly how many miles were on it in the end. ;)

Patriot blue was one of the three colors I considered....... the other two being Mineral gray and Molten Red. I would say the Mineral gray was my first choice and I got lucky that the only loaded Laramie 4x4 within 500 miles of me was that color. :D But the blue ones do look sharp!

Do you notice any improvement in performance and/or fuel economy with the K&N filter on your 4.7?

Also, is your 4.7 a High Output motor or a regular 4.7? If it's an H.O., we can compare results over coming weeks and months. :)

Thank's!
Patriot Blue was my first choice,it has that Wow factor.Mineral Gray was my 2nd.choice it is Very Sharp as well,I think the darker colors show alot more of the new design & detail's on the 05 Dak's.I like the darker colors better than Silver,White,Atlantic Blu & other lighter colors.Sorry,no offence to those owners it's just my 02.

Any way I didn't get the H.O. it wasn't offered @ that time.......I would love to have it though! :D
I did notice a diff in fuel eco right off the bat,it was 1.2-2.3 MPG more efficient as for more power,I dunno."the 5-7%" IM sure it's there I have the 3.55 rear end so mine is a Lil quicker than the 3.92 but I'll tell you this it sounds better :rck: .

BTW you have an awesome Truck nice choice in H.O.loaded Laramie 4x4 w/ 17" Chromes.........WTG :gr_patrio.I wish I had the extra $$$ to get the same.
I wish you the best of luck w/ you're new ride.

The part # is 33-2175 you can get it @ almost @ any part's store, I recomend to shop around & look for the cheapest price.I found it for $49.99 + tax.it was at "CAP's" of Worcester MA.I know it's no help to most but... :IDEA:Who Know's.

It'll come w/ a foam gasket which I feel you should install & it's easy to stick on & it also comes w/ 2 stickers. One will explain the recomended cleaning of the filter which is 50,000 Miles or (pending on conditions) & it's recomended to re-oil it.I placed that sticker on the Airbox.Cause you'll forget "when too" clean it.
The second sticker is just a novelty one.......I couldn't put it on my rear window or anywhere ele's for that matter I love my Truck way too much!!!!So I put it on the frame just above the driver's side rear tire, people @ stop sign's & Red light's can get a good view of it,It's suttle but effective :D

run to home depot or lowes. grab abs piping, 90 degree bend and some couplings. you have a resonator coming off the throttle body (where it say's 4.7l, and a small resonator off the air box the fenderwell.

replace all the piping and be suprised...sounds so much nicer and pulls a bit better too. if u need to get a better idea just check out my gallery pics :)

Could be a simple fix. When I first got my Ram it had a slight vibration at certain RPMs. I took it in and it turned out that one of the exhaust mounts was loose.

Well, I was on my way to the dealer a few months ago to get a new 2006 Dakota, but bought a Dodge Ram Daytona instead. I love all the Dakotas, afterall my last three vehicles were dakotas.

I had a 1995 RC longbox for a year and a half, but after seeing the newly designed Dakota, I aquired a 1997 RC V6 with a 5 speed. I would be still be driving it today if it weren't for it getting stolen and trashed. :( I had it fully customized too (over 7000 put into it).

So my I decided my next Dakota would be a lease. I got a 2002 Dakota SXT V6 extended cab. Had this one for almost 3.5 years when the Dodge dealership phoned to tell me I can opt out of the lease and go into a different vehicle.

I am leasing my Ram Daytona right now. Who knows, I might get a Dakota in the future, but right now I would say no. :D

Just checking in. Picked up my '05 QC SLT 4x4 about a week and half ago. So far I'm quite happy. Love the 4.7 in a truck this size, lots of fun to drive. That's not something you usually hear about trucks either. My only concern would be the quality of the finish. Seems to chip very easily. Already noticed a couple "rock chips" and it's not even two weeks old. :( Don't know, maybe I've just been unlucky. Nothing a little touch up wont fix I guess.

FourSevenDakota
08-07-2005, 09:31 PM
Rock chips are a fact of life with the factory front mudflaps. They're way too short to really be effective at keeping the front tires from throwing rocks at the truck. They're more cosmetic than functional really...

I have an 05 QC SLT 4x4 with the "reglur" 4.7 & 3.55 trac-loc. Overall I'm happy with it. Has a nicer ride than my 03' and feels more "modern" in some ways, but it seems like the interior has been cheaped out a but and it's too carlike inside now, me thinks. The brakes are a big improvement. Driveline-wise, my 03' was considerably quicker, sonded better and shifted better. The 05' does something weird at each shift point where it feels like the engine is momentarily detuned to go easier on the clutches....like it has 400hp or something, sheesh. My 03' had a nice crisp shift but this new one is kinda annoying. As I mentioned, it didn't sound as good as my old one and when I looked underneath, I saw why - it has a big muffler and 2 resonators! Within 15 minutes I had it at a friend's exhaust shop having the resonators removed and a nice big stainless tip put on to boot. Now it sounds right, but the engine is still a bit overburdened by the weight of the thing. Sometimes it feels really snappy, other times I think I've lost 3 cylinders or someone hooked a parachute to my bumper. Weird electronics, these things have. I've been getting about 17.5mpg overall. The looks have grown on me finally, and now the 2nd gen trucks look kinda dumpy to me. My only wish is that the 4x4 would sit a little higher...and I could do without the 70's retro "4x4" decals on the bed sides.

As soon as I mod I will :)

You know, dterrain, I noticed the same thing with my tranny. I'll have a better idea of how it feels tomorrow when I drive to work, haven't put it on the highway yet. :)

Out of curiosity, without the two resonators, does it sound somewhat loud at idle, or does it just give it a nice purr? I'm considering either an aeroturbine or flowmaster 40, but haven't decided yet. Either way, I don't like the loud pipes unless they're on my bike, so I'll probably keep the stock res on it unless that makes it too quiet.. :D

dterrian
08-15-2005, 02:32 PM
Actually it's still a bit on the quiet side, but at least it sounds like a v8 truck now. I'd say it's about the same as what my 03' sounded like (stock). You can hear it at idle when you're outside of the truck, but not inside. You can hear it on acceleration, but not at all at cruise. Some owners were complaining about the signature "sporty" exhaust note of the 01'-04' Dodges, so they put the resonators on the 05's (Ram too) to appease them, leaving the rest of us the option of cutting them off. One of the biggest benefits to removing them is the opportunity to lose the ugly thing hanging there in the back, not to mention the gay looking OEM tailpipe! My exhaust guy just cut the rear one off right at the entrance to the resonator and bent a new rear 1/2 tailpipe thathe finished off with the stainless tip. The front resonator is only about a foot long and he just welded in a straight pipe to replace it. $70 and I have a nice sound and a better looking butt-end. I'll probably leave it alone now. I put a Gibson on my 03' and it sounded great as long as you were in the mood, but sometimes it could be annoying.

Misplaced Texan
08-15-2005, 08:41 PM
Cool, that's kind of what I was looking for. Sounds to me like I need to make a visit to the exhaust shop! :)

Put her on the road today, and the shifts are pretty solid - everything seems right to me, and it's a ton more responsive than that crappy V6 Ford I had last. :D So far, I'm getting right at 15mpg, hopefully that will increase over time and after the mods I plan on doing. Of course, it will probably help once the novelty factor of a V8 wears off too!

I have been shopping around for a nice chrome exhaust tip for my truck... I may or may not change the muffler but I definitely want a chrome tip.

dterrian
08-16-2005, 10:13 AM
It's tough to just tack a new tip on these trucks because of the way the tailpipe bends around and points sorta downward. Plus, even with a nice tip, you'd still have the ugly resonator to look at. Best to just cut the tailpipe right where it enters the resonator and have a pipe bent in such a way that you can put a 18" long tip on that exits fairly level. The sound is so much nicer without the resonator anyhow. It's still way quieter than, say...a stock Mustang GT or Camaro, but at least it let's you know there's an engine under the hood now.

Just wanted to chime in. I bought my 05 Patriot Blue Slt 4x4 V8 Quad Cab in July and just finished up some mods on it. I bought a soft top tonneau, Bedrug, K&N, and tinted the fronts to match the factory. So far this Dakota has been great on and off the highway. Have yet to tow my boat with it, hope its not like most chrysler trannys and will blow up at 50 grand(03 jeep G. Cherokee). I love the Bedrug it looks great. Had one in my 97 dakota, i will never buy a spray in...Hopefully soon i can pick up an exhaust(any suggestions?) nothing too loud and some ventvisors....

Bought a Black '05 Club Cab ST Plus with 4.7.

I was more interested in a Ram, but the saleperson suggested I try the Dakota, and I loved it. A big upgrade over my '93 Toyota T100.

Now my family owns all mopars: '04 Ram 2500 Diesel, Pacifica, PT Cruiser, a '96 Intrepid, two '69 Barracudas and now my Dakota.

If you're set on changing the entire cat-back system, I'd reccommend Gibson. I've put their stuff on all my Dodges through the years and have always been more than pleased, which is kinda rare these days. I've experimented with Flowmasters and Dynomax, but always go back to Gibson and I'm sure I eventually will with this truck too. Their systems have a nice, polished sound without being overly loud and never "ratty". Good stuff.

I just baught a new 05 dodge slt cc 2x4 BLK (first time dodge)and have no complaints, well im coming from a 98 s-10 with a 4 banger. It was a debate between the colorado and the dakota (both with v-6), but the dakotas interior had me sold and the room almost feels like a fullsize, and I later found out that the 4.8 that you can get in the colorado only has 195 hp compare to the 211hp in the dakota, the dokota also has more torque. But all-in-all screw a chevy and buy a dodge you get more bang for your buck!!!

I too had an S10 it was a 96 5spd.4 bangha as well,It was a fun truck, and easy to trick out,but it was time to move on.I needed a bigger truck I have a wife & 2 kids plus we have a 24' tow behind camper & that lil S10 couldn't cut it!So it was time for an up grade,I looked @ Dodge Dakota & compared w/ the Chevy Colorado & found out there was no comparison & it just didn't have any balls!
I was kinda bummed to see the S10 series get replaced by the generation Colorado it's kinda laim, but O-well I really don't give a chit about Chevy any more.I totaly up graded & got the Quad cab 4.7 in Patriot Blue 5Spd.Auto 4X4,heated side mirrors, tow package, heavy duty shocks & springs,16"Alloies,A/C,alarm on the key fob, power seats, cruies controle, conveiance group, power windows, walnut trim, tinted windows ect....I love my new truck it's the Friggin Balls!!!

yeah i had my s-10 all tricked out, halo projector head lights, crystal turn markers euro tails, flowmaster, k&n intake, zenon body kit, chrome billet grill, fiberglass bed cover, reverse glow guages, jvc shx-700 head unit, 2 kicker cvr 12s with a class D kx600.1 amp pushing them. But im 6'2" and that thing just wasnt cutting it. Im now loving my dakota, the v6 has plenty of power and I have a damn cruise control now. The only thing that I do miss is the gas milage, but the smooth quiet ride makes up for it.

Got my '05 Dakota SLT Club Cab last month and I really like it.
It's my first pickup truck, third vehicle, and I must say, it's awesome.

It's all stock right now, not too sure what I want to do with it.
I'd like to get some pics posted soon, but for now just want to say hi.

hi im new here, and i have a 2005 Dakota Quad ST Plus w/ 4.7V8. black. class IV tow package :) lovin it.

at first i wasnt too keen on the unpainted front bumper, but honestly it has grown on me... and it wont chip like a painted bumper! i had a Cherokee sport before and man that painted bumper chipped like a mofo! :WHT:

Also, i was in the market originally for an SLT, but due to hurricane Katrina, almost all of the new vehicles in southern Louisiana were wiped out.
the few dealerships that survived the storm with any 05 stock sold them out very quickly after everyone started to need new cars.
i was very lucky to even get one that wasnt white! :P haha
but after seeing this truck with all of the features of the SLT except power locks and windows, i was sold.

my plans are:
1) new exhaust.. that stock setup is just too quiet! :P
2) foglamps.. however it seems that the ST bumper cover has those louver style foglamp hole covers molded in.. can anyone else confirm this? will i have to cut them out?
3) new stereo and custom sub enclosure i will build myself.

pics to come soon. she looks sharp now that shes had a bath and a good buffing! :)

The grill is a T-Rex. I got it from-- http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/TRX20421.htm after seeing one somewhere on this site. Also check out Freelantz's grill. Its similar, but his seems to show a little better. Someone else on the site has a mesh grill which also looks great. Your truck looks great. I like the handles and having the badges on the side. I know a lot of people like to "de-badge" completely, but I'm from the old "lots-o'-chrome" days and I like badges. I would like to get the OEM chrome door spears that everybody seems to have. Mine are crap plastic that the dealer threw-on after I bought the truck and raised a stink because the truck I test drove had them and the one I got didn't.

Hey Freelantz - was just talking about your grill with Dakota Red...

I've got the part-time 4wd. At the time I thought Part-time would save fuel, but after reading this site, I think you guys with the full-time get better mileage. I don't have the tow package, I should have gotten that but I started to "cheap-out" at the end of negotiations with the dealer. I'll probably add an OEM hitch--between myself and my fiancee we have 5 kids aged 17-25, and one of them is always stuck somewhere needing a tow!

I would say I get about 18-19 on the highway but I do more city/suburban driving than anything so my average is usually between 14 and 15. My truck not only has the full-time 4wd, but also the 3.92 rear end and anti-slip. This is a great combination for better handling and traction, but probably not the best combination for fuel economy!

It's still much better than any of the Rams I owned over the years, so I am not complaining. :D

I still think we should be doing better. I usually drive like a granny! Freelantz--have you noticed an improvement since your exhaust modification and the K&N drop-in? Engine is 3.7. I got it for the 4x4. Unfortunately, I hope someone comes up with a kit for cruise control! Need it!

Got a spray in liner, plan to get fog lights and tow hooks at some point. Probably a few other items.

So far I took off the muffler and last resonator and put in a Flowmaster 40 series delta flow dumped before the rear axle. Homemade cold air intake, tinted front windows to match rear sides. Lund hinged soft tonneau cover. Also made a custom grille for it. Hoping to get some 20" Boss 301's in the spring. Does anyone know what kind of head light bulbs are in the Daks? 30 more horses and 20 more ft/lbs than the standard 4.7, but the motor probably has more potential than the standard V8

the H.O. makes power with cams and the performance manifold, a good starting point for a street truck

For the grille, I baught some Stainless Steal, with 1/4" holes. Used bristal board to make the templates and then tranfered them to the sheet of steel. Then used a sheer to cut them out. I went to Canadian Tire and got got some 1.75" stainless bolts with nyloc nuts and some washers, the washers were 1.75" diameter. Just stuck the bolt through one of the holes that lined up between the stock grille and put the washer againts the 2 finns of the grille in the back and tightened it up. Only took about 4 hours to complete. Luckly I had a good buffing wheel to bring the shine up or it would have taken much longer.

Hi everyone,
Just got my new 2006 December 14th, 2005. Purchased from O'Brien's in Springfield,IL. This is my 3rd truck from that Dealer in 4 years. After having a 02-1500 Quad, then a 04-Dakota extended cab I think my 06 has the best features. I have added a bed liner, bed rail caps, K & N air filter :VHOT: and rear mud flaps. Getting a chance in central Illinois (Springfield) to wash and wax in January was a rare opportunity yesterday. I also installed rear mud flaps and bed rail caps. The bed caps are mopar. I will post some pictures possibly today depending on the weather. Are there anyother 06 owners on this forum?

Welcome to DodgeTalk, and congrats on the new truck! :rck:

Looks like you're off to a good start with your mods. Did you get a chance to take any more pics?

I got the reg 4.7 would have liked to get the H.O. but I couldn't find an 05 in my area with the H.O. But for what I use it for I'm kinda glad with the price of 92Oct gas. Planing on lowering it I allready have 275-45-20 tires and wheels now I need to get rid of some of that fenderwell space.

Took delivery on my 05 SLT 4x4 in mid-December. Overall very happy with my purchase. Eventually, looking to add a K&N filter and a tonneau cover to it.

Not a lot of bells and whistles on the one my dealer found, but it does what I need it to do.

Hope I can learn a lot from this forum...this is the first truck I've owned of my own - and I want it to last!

The K&N filter does make a small difference on these trucks. I have one installed and am pleased with the results.

Well, I could go either way with this truck. I could keep it, slap a winged tailgate cap, new rims, a roll pan and some fog lights on it. Or, I could sell it, because every experience I've had so far with the dealer has been a disaster.

This is my first Dodge. Let's just say, the dealership has me thinking it will be my last. I want to enjoy it in the meantime, though. The question is, how far do I want to go in outfitting this truck if, at the core, I'm disappointed in it so far.

Things I'm ready to greenlight are a soft tonneau and Flowmaster's new Force II exhaust application.

Don't get discouraged. What problems have you had?

Jailbreak

The brake vibration problem detailed on these forums is something I've had. I'm past my first service on them without fixing the problem, and a second is upcoming.

The dealer jerked me around more than usual in the buying process.

Each service visit has found a new scratch in the paint, followed by their promise to "fix" it when they have a detailer around, followed by their denial when I return for repair.

I was duped into the "Auto Armor" teflon coating. Which isn't armor. Or teflon, for that matter. Idiot!

Some non-dealer, bad luck things that lead me to believe my truck is cursed:

at 8900 miles the other day, it stalled out at a light. I though new trucks didn't do that.

The bed was hit by another car just below the driver's taillight -- a $1600 repair total (covered by insurance)

My gas was siphoned earlier this week

And the #1 overall reason why I feel this truck is killing me:

12.5 mpg.

12.5 freakin miles per gallon.

That's 4.5 away from the low end on the sticker. Ridiculous.

I don't know what to do, but this truck is teetering on the edge of being sold.

Sounds like you've had some bad luck and a real crappy dealer!

Is your 12.5 mpg around town? I get between 12 and 13 mpg average around town ... but on a recent trip to pennsylvania i got 20.5, all highway driving!

I only have one major complaint of this truck so far and thats the ride. I still get a front end shimmy at times and i'm getting a lot of real wheel hopping now???

lsd with not enough power and our suspension will do that to u. i don't really have that problem unless turning slowly and she chirps as i turn. i have never seen more then 15mpg and i get the stalling problem to. wheres the damn reflash... i hate this truck.

fontanamtrspts
01-27-2006, 10:48 PM
i dont believe the wheel hop,is caused by not enough power, its very common in a leafspring vehicle (especialy with a lsd) pet a couple of spring clamps on the front part of the spring if it bothers you too much, that will stop some if not all of it.....my old ZX3 with the stage 3 aerocharger set up, and some other work (used to run 13.46 at 103 mph) used to suffer from tremendous wheel hop, to the point wher i broke 2 upper tranny mounts (the one under the airbox) i ended up fabricating a aluminum limiter plate to stop this from happening... and i had a urethane mount kit also...but they didnt make that mount.....i havent had wheel hop in my truck, even with it lowered and having the overload spring removed.....

The ride quality is terrible for the most part. I was thinking of picking up some edelbrock performers from work on the cheap just to see if they would make a difference.

The engine is also really chatty when I first start it up.

My 12.5 mpg is a mix, primarily highway time, though. I have a short commute but live and work very close to the interstate. It's Southern California. Everything's a freeway.
I drove to Vegas for New Years, getting my top mileage ever: 17.2, and that's with the K&N. Before that, everything was .5 to 1 mpg worse. I also tested a Tornado at work just to prove it was garbage. It was. Mileage and power both down (power measured from a "feel" standpoint).

I think the truck is too quiet for a V8. For something with such a hefty engine in it, it sure sounds alot like a Buick Century. I know exactly how to fix it--a Flowmaster 50 series. But I'm waiting for the dual kit to arrive. Same thing with the ride quality. And my ugly wheels. I know exactly how to fix it. The thing I wonder is if, after spending all that upgrade money, I'll ever be happy with this truck.

Mine seems to handle fine, no hopping issues in turns. Mileage is 14.9 in mostly city to 16.5 city (hwy mix). Hoping to get a couple of more MPGs out of it. Still have stock filter...will probably try a K&N or similar type when my existing one bites the dust.
Using the stock Goodyear Wranglers..can't wait to replace them to get BFG's or Cooper's. Until then, I have a tire press. question. I don't have anything to tow or bigger things to haul in bed as of now to justify having at recommended 44 psi. 35 psi is makes it ride too soft. If I keep it at 40, will I adversely affect tire wear?

A daily change is the same thing I've noticed. And it's not on different terrain--it's on the same commute! I didn't even think such an erratic feel was possible with a truck--it was just stiff or balanced. I find it super strange how it varies from day to day.

I had my check engine light come on about a month ago. Had it checked and the scan showed the battery dropped below 9 volts, funny as it always started and never dragged???

Last week the truck died on me leaving work. It just shut down, no sputter or hesitation just shut off! It started back up but i'm slowly loosing faith in this truck. My rear has feels a little funky when leaving from a stop lately also!

A lot of little problems i've been lucky enough to avoid in new vehicles up to this point. The jury is still out how much longer i'll keep it :dunno:

One more 05 Dakota owner here. I really like my truck. Traded my 02 Ram for it. First spanking brand new vehicle I've ever bought. It's a Quad cab, Black, SLT. I had the front door windows and the rear glass tinted to match the rear door glass. Looks Good!
Installed a 6CD, Cass. MP3 player from a Magnum as an upgrade. Just last night, finished installing a Navigation system from an 2002 Ram. Wired it into the body harness, so it looks factory.

If anyone out there has heard of a dually setup, obviously just for looks, since it's a 5 lug pattern, I think that would look good on these new Dakotas. Came across a picture of a tricked out 05 Dak at an auto show with duallys, so I'm not alone in thinking this.

I just found this site and hope it will be helpful down the road. I just purchased an 06 Dakota Quad Cab SLT a month ago to replace my '99 Ram. Went with the Dakota with V-6 to get better mileage, and so far I'm extremely pleased with the mileage (21 MPG) and ride. (I'm in sales and drive about 4000 miles per month.) I have received several comments regarding this truck's appearance. Patriot Blue really looks sharp on this truck, and the wide fenders and high ground clearance give the impression that it's a 4X4 when it's not. I added a 3/16" double pin stripe in silver that matches the color of the stock wheels. Future additions will be sprayed-in bed liner and diamond plate tool box. Where I need help is in cost effective performance mods. My old Ram had a 318 with K&N filter and dual Turbo exhaust system. Let's just say I'm having some adjustment issues whenever I have to hit the gas hard in traffic.

I'm not a mechanic or engineer, but I am fairly mechanically inclined, so any replies need to be in layman's terms. I'm also limited by a tight budget so any modifications need to be the most cost effective ones available. I plan to add a K&N filter when it's time to change the original. Has anybody out there with a V-6 already done this, and how did it impact performance? Down the road, I'd like to change the exhaust, but I don't want anything to loud. (My old Ram was obnoxiously loud with the Turbo -- I don't want to go back there.)

At any rate, I'm very happy with this truck so far. But, it is lacking in the power department. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The filter is a great idea. My 4.7 doesn't feel right without it. Further down the line, the Flowmaster 50 series muffler is probably the popular thing to base a new exhaust on. Flowmaster rates their custom exhaust with this muffler as a Force II system, meaning it is louder than stock outside and audible inside, but not as loud as their trademark sound. The only kit for our truck that they list is a single side exit; so if you want a dual exit, it's going to have to be custom at this point.

I talked to a guy recently who had the V6 with a K&N intake, a Flowmaster dual exhaust and some other mods. He was getting into a chip or programmer next, with who knows what else after that. The point is that it was going to cost him thousands to pursue the V8 power from the V6 engine. If you want to save yourself a headache, and you really love this truck, you're going to have to do a few mods and accept that it may not quite feel like a V8 still. Or, go get the V8 now and save yourself the grief.

Here is my new toy. 2005 Dakota SLT Club Cab 4x4 V8 Atlantic Blue. Just got it on Thursday 2006-03-09 with 92 miles. I'm up over 200 now. I have only put about 150 miles of my own on the truck and am 100% happy with it. I'm a little discouraged reading about various horror stories on this and other boards regarding the reliability of this truck. Hopefully, I'll have smooth sailing. Note, the Dakota barely fits in my garage, so I had to hang a tennis ball to aid in parking. Also applied some foam to back of garage wall in case I ever over shoot the tennis ball by an inch or more.

Does anyone know anywhere online to get a drop in bed liner for a 3rd gen Dakota?

My '99 Ranger that I had for five years prior to trading it in on this Dakota had a drop in liner. I punished the heck out of that liner, and it just kept coming back for more. Having such good luck with it, I'm a little hesitant to go with a spray in.

But, maybe I should get a spray in liner instead. What do those run, about $500 for a Rhino lining? Is there any difference in the various brands like Line X or Rhino?

You have to do some serious mods before the 180* thermostat will make any difference. Also, could ou do me a favor? When you get your true dual setup, could you get me the design layout on it? I am looking to buy a mandrel bent system, but there are no mandrel bending companies ANYWHERE near. So I have to buy the bends and all that stuff. So if you could get me the layout on it, where the bends are, what angle the bends are, how long the straight pipes go... EVERYTHING... I'd be very greatful. :rck: :rck: :rck:

Dusty05

That would be a lot of work! :dropjaw:

We're just bending it up as we go, that's what you'll probably have to do also.
There's a guy on here that posted pics of a true dual setup, that might help you more. There's going to be dozens of angles and bends to mock up. Especially since I'm going all the way back around the 31" spare, rear axle, gas tank, etc.

New to the group. I recently bought a new '06 Dakota Quad Cab, 4x2 v6, Inferno Red. I decided on the Dodge based on the price from the local dealer. The Tacoma was my first pick, but they were unwilling to work the numbers. I know many of you feel the truck is under powered, but 200hp is a hugh step up from my Del Sol's 90hp. And, the ride is 10 times better than the Toyota. I made the better pick, and I'm thrilled every day.

You're kidding about the Raider looking better right? Cuz if so, that's a REALLY funny joke. If not... well... go stare at one for about 30 minutes. :thatfunny

You'll punch yourself for thinking that.

Hello everyone. New owner here :)
2006 Dakota R/T, 4.7 H.O., 5 spd auto, bright red with R/T stickers and factory Mopar hood scoop, tuned exhaust, R/T gauges, R/T embroidered bucket seats, All wheel drive, 4x4, quad cab.
Don't know what else to tell you, I will post pics when I get them. It's just an awesome truck, and it's been since 1997 when I bought a new Tacoma that I was so excited about buying a new truck. I love this thing to hell, and when test driving it I knew 300 yards up the road I would buy it.
I had said the first Dakota SLT I drove was boring. Well not this one, it's anything BUT boring!!! It's a blast!!!

08-19-2006, 06:21 AM
On a secondary note here, does anyone know how many R/T's get built? The R/T package isn't even available on the Dodge website that I could find, and most dealers say they have never had one.

Congrats to all the new members and new owners! :rck:

powerfulhemi, I don't know an exact figure on the R/T production either, but suffice it to say, not very many were made for '06. I would estimate less than 3,000. Hopefully more of the production data will be released by Chrysler in the near future.

Hi there folks. I'm new to this information board, and I found it by accident--I LOVE IT!! There is so much information on our Dodge's I couldn't believe all that I have been seeing and reading. Anyway, we've been Dodge drivers for years, and just recently traded our Dodge 2001 Ram in for a 2006 Dodge Dakota Club Cab St-WOW what a difference. We loved the ole Dodge, but it was more truck than we needed at this point in time. Felt like leaving a 3000 Sq. foot home into a 100 Sq. apartment, but you know what, it's comfy for us. Call it the Plain Jane-no powers or any of the goodies, but the deal they offered us we just couldn't refuse it ;) Only serious problem we've had were the tires, or the right tire-pulled hard to the left-it had Goodyears Wrangler's on her and that tire was bad. Went to a dealership (not the one we got it from) and the solution to the problem was to put it on the back and bring the back to the front AFTER he told me it was a BUM tire  Long story short-got a new set of Michlien tires on her now and NO MORE pulling to the left or right.

Only other compliant is the so called front middle seat??? if that's what you call it. It's useless as is so I've been trying to figure out how to remove it, and get a small console to slip in there. I can feel the bolts under the seat part but there isn't a whole lot of room to get my hand under let alone whatever kind of socket or wrench needed to unbolt it--any suggestions out there as to how to get to  I was thinking about tearing the upholistery
off and approaching it that way, cause IF I ever get it out it ain't gonna back in.

I am so sorry I didn't mean for this to turn into a book and you'll probably tell me not to post again, but I just got carried away. Anyway, love your site, love our truck and by golly folks, keep up the good work with all your helpful hints and knowledge--some of us dummies need ALL the help we can get ;)

Thank you

Happyjack,
I had my front bench seat out when I added custom seat covers over the orignal coverings about six months ago. Just unbolt the complete bench seat and put the seats on their backside inside the rig. You will then be able to remove the center unit. Be careful you do not damage the airbag deployment sensors connected to the seats. Also disconnect the battery before you start. Then disconnect the wiring to the seats before you roll it on it's backside. Good luck.

Hi Max:

Thank you for your response about removing the third seat, but a question. We have 3 seperate seats in the front, and I'm not sure if you call them bench or bucket seats. I was able to pull the covering up lastnight on the middle buddy seat to see what was holding that puppy on. It sits on 4 brackets(2 from each side) that come from under the driver and passenger seats. I can see where the bolts are on the little seat, and they all are facing the floor-real close to the floor. I might be wrong, but I thought that a bench seat was one continous seat from one side to another  .
I didn't see any wire under the middle one-it looked all clear except for the bracket it sits on. Then I thought about taking the so call back off where it folds down, but it was getting too dark to tackle that. One thing I did notice that there is a ring-didn't look like a washer-where the bolt comes through on the top of the bracket that has 3 little holes in it and was wondering if just MAYBE I got a punch in the holes that would turn that ring--I'm sorry, this is so hard to describe when writing it especially if you can't see what I'm talking about. Maybe I'll just forget the whole idea and keep the blasted seat there and live with it.

One other last thought I had was to finished taking the cloth off it and use a hacksaw to cut the thin metal rods that the seat sits on-leave the rest intack (frame and all) and make something useful to fit down inside the hole. Anyway, thank you for you input and help, but like I said if I got to pull wiring and such, I'm not going to take that chance and mess up anything.

I really appreciate your time for me ;)
Happyjack

Yes the bench seat is made up of three separate pieces. If you remove the center section you will have bucket seats. As I indicated before if you unbolt the complete bench seat and tip it back you will be able to remove the center section. To recover the seat sections, I had the bench seat broken down to the three parts. good luck

Hey I just bought a black 2005 quad cab slt with the 4.7L about 2 weeks ago. Im very pleased with it's power and handling. Right now it has an insulated topper on it which is nice for now because i hunt ALOT in the fall, but come summer time i'll take it off and throw on a roll up and some black chrome bed rails. My dad owns a truck accessory shop here in MN so i've put a few small accessories on it like chrome door handles, husky floor mats, sill plate protectors, ventvisors, and a hitch. But thats all for now. If there was a hypertech programmer available i'de have one but no such luck yet. Another thing I was dreaming about was a shaker hood but thats a project for next summer. :)

Hey new member here. I got an 05 SLT 4X4 a few months ago now. Overall, I've got to say I'm not real impressed, particularly with its offroad ability. I installed a Detroit Truetrax wich helped, but still the ground clearance, approach, departure and breakover angles are terrible. Should have bought a Tacoma or Frontier I guess, but now I've got to try to make the best of it.

A yellow RT....that's sweet. I have an 06 Red RT and I love it. Can you post pics for us? Is yours all wheel drive? And how do you like the 4.7 HO?
The only bad thing about my truck is the front shocks, they just plain suck. They have no damping at all, and after some bumps the truck bounces and bounces. But other than that, I have 3400 trouble free miles, averaging right around 15MPG every tank.

Hey powerful hemi it is sweet, have not done much touring yet but it seems to have a ton of power on the highway .........passes eveything in site except a gas station...lol I will try to post some pics when I figure out how to.to tell you the truth I bought it because it was yellow and it really goes with all the Dewalt stuff in my garage.I know it is an expensive way to get yellow but were only goin around once and it seems to turn heads where ever I go so anyways its a 4x2 Club Cab as the kids are gone now and there are no mountains between me and work so I really don't see the need for a 4x4.....just more to go wrong lol

2006 Dakota Quad Cab Laramie 4x4 4.7L
Atlantic Blue Pearlcoat

Before I bought it I actually preferred the previous style. I didn't want on '05 because I've had problems with 1st year of new model vehicles in the past.

I was looking at some 2004 QC but decided to get an '06 because with $9k in rebates (Factory and dealer combined) I only paid $23k for a loaded Laramie. $3-4k more than a reasonably loaded '04.

I still think the '04 look more rugged, but I love my '06.

I just took delivery of an '06 Dakota Access Cab in Mineral Grey, 4 x 4, w/ FX-4 off road package, and HO V8. Bought it on close out from dealer that was also closing after 47 years. got it for about 10K off sticker!!! Unfortunately for me, my son will get this (and the bill) when he sells his old car , a 95 GMC Yukon 2-door.

New to the forums, been browsing quite a bit. I just got my first Dakota 2 days ago, here it is (crummy cell phone picture, but it is what was available):
Can't link to pictures? See attachments

I have 104 miles on it! 2006 Quadcab 2WD SLT Sport.
From my build list:
DGQ - 5-Spd Automatic 545RFE Transmission
DHAP - Lock-Up Torque Converter
DMH - 3.92 Axle Ratio
DRBP - Corporate 9.25 LD Rear Axle
DSAP - Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle
EVA - 4.7L V8 MPI Engine

RAQP - AM/FM CD 6-Disc MP3 Radio
RDZ - Steering Wheel Mounted Audio Ctrls
RD7P - 276 Watt Amplifier
RGAP - 6 Alpine Speakers
RSAP - Sirius Satellite Radio
Hitch - Class IV Receiver
All the heavy duty suspension components and stabilizer bars.
The overhead computer, seat warmers, etc.

So far, I love this truck! Very nice ride, good pickup for a truck, and I really like the looks of the sport package. The sound setup is very nice; I love the satellite radio and 6cd changer. Gas mileage has been about 15-16 according to the computer, all city (I only have 100 miles on the truck, so I'll see averages later).

I love the graphite color too! It matches my motorcycle.

The power seems fine for the moment. I wish superchips supported the 06's, as that would probably be my only mod. I'll just keep my eyes open.

OK guys, I already posted this in a separate thread, but here is my new truck, 06 SLT V8, this pic is while it was on the lot. I will take some pics at home and post them, so far only mods have been Extang RT tonno, and as I install that this weekend I will be getting rid of the drop in liner (email me if you want it, I am in NJ)... in preparation for a spray in. I will also do a K&N drop in, maybe some upgraded plugs, and a billet grill. I would also like to add a bumper with the chrome strip on it....

Hello, my name is Jason, and I am a Dodge-a-holic, i drive my white 2006 Dak, 4.7 L 4wd, Quad cab to and from work every day and refuse to put it up. I travel 64 miles round trip to and from work and currently have 14354 miles as of this post. I have never experienced any problems what so ever, except of course, the (sponges) in the front that they call shocks. However, i plan on eventually getting, like every one else, the 2'' leveling kit and 3'' body w/ the 265/70/16 BFG TA/AT's KO. Cant go wrong there either, especially w/BFG's. I work part time @Sears and get a discount on tires as well as everything else i need.

Thats because Dakota-Durango uses the more standardized, but unofficial terms of rating Dakota generations. Chrysler's official generations are 1987-1996 for Gen I, 1997-2004 for Gen II, and 2005+ (so far) for Gen III.

The unofficial, but more recognized, style is 1987-1990 for Gen I, 1991-1996 for Gen II, 1997-2004 for Gen III, and 2005+ for Gen IV.

So here, you have a gen II, there, you have a Gen III.

Hope that clears it up for you.
