Hello. I am the new proud owner of a 1990 Dodge Ram 250 360. The cost was $50 .. It runs and has a fully working Plow.

My only use for this vehicle is to plow a 2 mile private road. I have found various issues that will need to be addressed but one that seems like a biggie is the locking device for the front axle. The truck has auto locking hubs that appeal to work off a vacuum device. Can this whole thing be converted to manual or better yet forced into permenant 4wd which is really all I want to do..

The transfer case woks as I have the front drive shaft turning. I believe the dissconnect is this locer device but please steer me in the right direction if there is more to this..

Other issues involve the odd use of a pair of vice grip pliers to squeeze off the rear break line. I of course un squeezed them only to cause a small environmental disaster.. Wheel cylinders shot as well as the line going to them that someone destroyed trying to remove..

fun fun fun..

have to change the front axle to get true manual hubs. i guess you could run straight vacuum to the locking unit on top of the axle and have them always locked in, since all u are using it for is plowing the driveway.

check for mud and stuff in the vacuum ports in the unit, and also the vacuum switch on the t-case. also, the switch on the t-case could be bad.

Thanks Speed Dragon

I will get the truck up in the air and see what things look like...

I was not sure if the locker could be modified without changing axle.. Will go that route if nothing else works..

happy new year

dont know if you fixed the problem but with the jeeps you could lock the front axle into 4x4 by taking the dif cover off and looking around you should see a fork that engages/disengages and you can use washers to space it into a permanet lock. not sure if its the same as the D30 on the jeeps but it may be similar. the website that has the writeup for it is down right now but you may want to look on jeepforum.com under the cherokee section and do a search for vacumm disconect.
