On the '87 Dakota, when tearing it apart (uhh, I mean, dissasembly...) I ran into a prop. valve for the rear brakes....
Kind of an oddball for me, mounted to the rear leaf spring, cable operated. Really strange....
Now, this is a first for me, the other guys had seen it, but didn't know any more about it than I did. I'm guessing it's function is to compensate for axle windup and/or suspension angle in the rear. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Now, for the issue, can I just chuck this thing in favor of a different prop. valve that I trust. I'm not sure this sucker EVER worked, let alone still does. And I really don't want to replace or repair it, since I it seems really unnecessary to me...

This is an early attempt at ABS. It is a secondary prop valve. When there is more weight in the rear, this will allow the rear brakes to work harder. Just the oppisite the lighter it gets. If it's not leaking, it's still good. Your prop valve is still in front of the vehicle where it belongs.

Ahh, that makes sense now. Well, since it got torn off last night before I got there, I guess it's time to discontinue that option. Beisdes, it looked like hell, and I can't put that back on this nice shiny truck..
