Hi, i just bought a 1986 Dodge Ram 150 pickup truck for a couple hundred bucks. It needs a new starter on it. I would like to replace this myself but don't know where to look online to find out how to replace it. Does anyone know of a sight that would walk me thru this? I don't want to have to pay to have this done if I can replace it myself. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. :dunno:

not that hard to do,first take off the positive battery cable, then go underneath the drivers side and youll see the starter, take off the small wire and the battery cable off of the starter, then theres one bolt and one nut on a stud holding the starter on,you might have a heat shield also which has a big hose clamp holding it in place around the starter, remove that it makes it easier getting the starter out, then it should slide out and with a little manuvering itll be out.PUt back in in reverse order.hope that helps.

Do yourself a favour and get a new style starter. They are a straight bolt in.
Anything from a 90 or so and up Ram, Ram Van, or Dakota. V6 or V8.
Save the nuts for the wires from the new starter, they are metric.

I agree w/jfs, the new starters are lighter and more efficient.

i've had the same starter on my truck for 6 years w/ no problems. it was on there when i got it too, so who knows how long it's been on there.
