Just traded my 94 SWB van with 318 for a 2002 SWB van with 318 and am disappointed with the gas mileage. The 94 got between 17 and 21 at 60 mph on the interstate where the 2002 on the same trip only gets between 11 and 14. I know that the 02 "feels" heavier but that still does not account for the significant difference in mileage. I intend to change plugs, filters and cap/rotor this coming weekend but is there a good injector cleaner I should be looking at as well?? I do a lot of hi-way driving and thought the newer model would have been more fuel efficient. Any suggestions appreciated.... thanks.

are the gear ratios the same?

As far as I recall both have the 3.54 or thereabouts gear. Both were stock and I recall only the one gear ratio with no options. Thanks.

Yeah, just go through the tune up basics. Thats about all you can do to start with.

Does it have overdrive? If so, is it going into overdrive when it's supposed to? My van refuses and I get about the same mileage as you. I have to get it diagnosed...

The OD works fine. I have changed the plugs and all filters. After two tanks of premium gas, I am still only cracking the 14 mpg mark. I just find it difficult that the port injected motor does not get better mileage than the throttle-body injected motor, even if the chassis is several hundred pounds heavier. I know the engine has been moved forward eight inches or so which makes the front heavier and changes the weight ratio, but it should not make 5 mpg difference. I think I want my 94 back..... thanks.

Actually in 94 the engine was multi-port injected...but I digress. It seems that these Magnum engines are not known for good MPG ratings. How much more does the 02 model weigh as compared to the 94? A 5 or 6 hundred pound increase could affect the fuel mileage.
