Greetings all, the error code 740 came up, indicating TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) malfunction, which Bob says means the whole thing has to come out so we may as well start looking for a new transmission (isn't really any worse than it has been for months, problem is intermittent, but one of these days it could suddenly get worse of course) - according to repair manual, the tranny is a 32RH. Searching eBay produces pretty much every other transmission ever made, but not this one. Question 1 - is there another that would fit this van without too much monkeying around? Question 2 - anyone know of a good source for these transmissions? Question 3 - a friend who worked at a dealership says this transmission has a pretty poor history in terms of longevity/reliability, and since this is the second failure for this transmission (although it does have 189K miles) I guess I would have to believe him - is trying to just fix or replace the torque converter without replacing the whole transmission an exercise in futility?

Thanks - hope all are enjoying the weekend!

Judi,

The 3spd auto transmission you have in your van is also known as the A727 Torqueflite which has been around in one form or another since the late 50's. The reliability of these transmissions is legendary to say the least. At almost 200K on your van, I'd say that is pretty darn good. The fact that you got a code that said that the TCC is having a problem doesn't necessarily mean the whole transmission has to come out. I would ask a few transmission shops in your area about what may be involved in this repair. Worst case scenario is that yes the transmission will have to come out.
