Now that it is in the 20's and 30's I have discovered that my heater is not working? The only time that I can get heat is when I am in a traffic jam in stop-and-go traffic. Once I get onto the open road my temperature gauge goes back down to cold and my heater blows cold air. I believe my temperature gauge works as it does show the temperature going up in a traffic jam. What should I look for? Is it the heater core?

I would recommend you replace your thermostat. It probably is stuck open or broke. If you have the 2.0 it is under the plastic elbow coming off the side of the head going to the top of the radiator.

I started experiencing this problem a couple of weeks ago - found that I was low on coolant ( I should check the level every year or so whether it needs it or not). Sounded just like yours - blew cool air at idle speed. Problem solved with addition of a couple of quarts.

I had a stratus 1998 like no other here's the ride http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/358465
Like i mention on this site on stratusphere and other sites
Stratus are an owners nightmare nothing but headaches that's the reason i got rid off mine and got me a mazda 3 2005 5 doors 5 speed. Get an import man. The only good american cars are the very expensive ones like the viper and or dodge's that cost $40,000 bucks and above. I owned a stratus put alot of money into it including a new engine and all i got was $4000 for her cause of that. Good luck with your ride bro you gonna need it Peace.

Usually low coolant or pressure loss due to a leak is the culprit for this. My wife is experiencing this right now with her Taurus. Her radiator is leaking and I'm saving my pennies for the $200 it'll take to buy a "new" one.
Look for a leak at where the upper radiator hose goes into the radiator. It's a common place for leaks with plastic core radiators.
