posted a question on mpg last week and got replys to check the boots. i did check the boots and found no cracks or holes. can anyone explain why this would affect the mpgs. replys said to check with air pressure {the boots] but did not do that yet,i checked the turbo and the 2 lines under the turbo that have rubber couplings in the lines and those lines go up to the top of radiotor and appear to be air intake lines so why would cracks affect the mpgs.are these the right boots to check. where else should i check for decrease in mpg. i did put the next size taller tires than stock which did mess my speed odemeter up a little would this affect my mpg of a decrease of 100 miles per tank full. thanks for any reply jerry

It was explained to me that it is a matter of engine efficiency. Say you make 180 hp with no air leaks. Introduce an air leak and what happens. To make the same 180 hp will require more fuel (a deeper push on the go peddle). More fuel used results in poorer MPG. Pressure testing the boots and intercooler is a good idea. It doesn't take very much of a leak to hurt mileage.

The one size taller tires will short you a little bit too. Missed your first post so not sure how much you're missin. Not only will it effect the miles travled but it will effect the RPM of the motor at crusing speed. This can kill MPG in a hurry. Gave someone else the example of girlfriends Escort. With 185-65-14 we got 35-45 MPG. I decided to put 205-45-16 on it. They are the same height but about 1/2" wider. Mileage is now 25-30 MPG.

thanks for the reply phil, the air test should i remove each boot by itself and test or is there a method of testing all at the same time jerry

You will have to make a tester. How elaborate depends on you. I like things simple. Go to a hardware store and buy 2 pieces of abs or similar pipe about a foot long and 2 large screw type band clamps. The pipe's diameter should be close in size to the steel tube to which the inner-cooler boots attach too. Undo the boot at the air horn. Install the first piece of abs pipe into the boot and tighten the factory clamp on the pipe. Undo the boot at the turbo and install 2nd piece of pipe. Next, out of a car or truck inner tube, cut out a block off plate. Fasten the block off over the exposed pipe opening with a bought band clamp. Make sure one of the block off plates has the tire/valve stem in it. Use the valve stem plate to pressurize the system. Hairspray will help to hold innercooler boots in place. Alternately, you can buy end caps for the abs pipe instead of using an inner tube. These end caps are cemented in place. In one of the end caps, you will have to drill a hole for a tire valve. Get this tire valve at a tire shop. It will be made of either brass or stainless steel. It will have a sealing washer and a nut on the end which is inserted into the hole in the endcap. Clear as mud???
