Just bought a 2002 Ram passenger van and noticed that when the heater control is in the position to duct air to the floor, it does not. It continues to come out either the facial vents or the defrost ducts. Vehicle is out of warranty. Is this something that a mechanically suited person like myself can fix or is this similar to the dreaded Jeep "door control" problem where the fix is replacing the entire assembly at 800 bucks or so? I will be asking the dealer tomorrow about this but I realize that "as is" means just that. Thanks for any ideas.

It's sounds like it's just a vacuum problem. Under the hood you may find a vacuum diagram that will show you where the main vacuum feed to the HVAC controls originates. Check to make sure that 1) the tube is connected and 2) it's not broken.
If this doesn't help then it may be time to disassemble the dash to get at the back of the controls to see if there any vacuum leaks.
I'm not too familiar with the 1998-2003 Ram Van dash set-ups, but this is pretty basic stuff. I'm more familiar with the 1978-1997 dash designs.
