:help: Hi, My grandfather has a 1995 Intrepid with a 3.5, only 60k miles, and religiously maintained... he came out of the store yesterday and his car wouldnt start, acted like a dead battery, would just click, but not turn over. He had it towed to a garage, after a few hours the engine tried to turn over, but still was very slow in turning, and wouldnt start....

The garage checked the battery, which was fine, and installed a new starter. The engine immediately started, but had a noticible upper end "knock" or tap...they let it run for about 5 minutes, when all the sudden someone saw oil running out from underneath... they lifted the car and noted that the oil filter had EXPLODED, and blew the entire side out of it. They immediately shut off the car, changed the oil and the filter, retarted it, and it once again started fine, but within 5 minutes the second filter exploded under pressure. The guy has been a Chrysler technician for 12 years and said he has NEVER seen or heard one do this before... his only thoughts are a faulty/blocked oil pump, but the car had ran perfectly the day before, and has NEVER thrown a check engine light, oil light, etc... Anyone ever hear of this, or know what the fix is? my grandfather doesnt want to pay a fortune for them to work on it when they admiteddly arent even sure what the problem is, or if there is any other internal engine damage as a result... Any input or ideas would be appriciated... thanks! -Joe Barr

It sounds like a definite oil pressure problem..WOW. Some oil pumps have a spring of sorts that acts as a pressure regulator. What the shop should do is hook a pressure gauge up to where the oil pressure sensor is screwed into the block. Before the filter expodes they can get a reading. But it really sounds like a pump or something is blocking oil from exiting the filter allowing pressure to build.

What brand of filter is on it? I hope it isnt one of those generic pieces of junk you can buy at Walmart or Billy Bobs gas and groceries. If it is i would recomend checking the engine and oil pump output. Remember pumps dont make pressure, they just move a volume and the resistance to flow creates the pressure. If the pump checks out I would be going after the filter manufacturer for any engine damage that occurred as a result of this issue.
