From time to time when I shut of my 95 caravan I smell a strong gas
smell.

I have brought it to the dealer who has done a fuel system test ...
which is expensive...2 times...and have not been able to find anything.

This only happens from time to time...but when it happens, you
can really smell it.

Has anybody else run into this type of problem?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

I have never heard this complaint on shutdown.

I have seen in cold weather where the 3.0L engines fuel lines have to be double clamped in order to seal them at the fuel rail.

Hope this helps:)

Could it be that when you shut down the engine there is still unburnt fuel in the cylinders ?

Could be that the o-rings that seal the injectors to the fuel rail and intake are seeping raw fuel because when you shut the engine off, the fuel is still under pressure and you can smell it. Take a small flashlight and look to see if you see any fuel puddling up at the bottom of any of the injectors.

Fuel pressure is always constant, if there is a leak it should leak all the time.
Seems strange that you can't locate this. Do you park beside someone else when this happens? Is your fuel cap sealing properly? Is your charcoal cannister working properly?
Do you make sure you don't overfill the vehicle? Is the fuel filter or lines leaking under the van?

I had a 96 Caravan that needed the gasket changed 3 times on the fuel pump assy on the top of the fuel tank. The last time they did it seemed to cure it. The cause of the smell was gas leaking onto the top of the tank from around the pump assy when the gas sloshes around. Most noticeable with a full tank. If you take it in to be checked , do it with about a 1/4 tank or less as they have to drop the tank to fix it.
