Hey everyone. I'm new here. I have a problem with my 93 Intrepid. It happenend a few times last winter and now that it's getting colder it's starting again. When I start the car, and shift it into drive or reverse, it won't move until it gets warmed up (which depending on the weather can be a pain the in ass). Sometimes if it does decide to go, it will only go 40 km/h max. (limp mode?). has anybody else had this problem and if so, what did you do to fix it? I certainly hope it doesn't require a new transmission.

Has the transmission fluid ever been changed?

As a matter of fact, I just got my husband to change the fluid and filter 2 days ago(yes, we used ATF+3). Didn't change a thing. I think it's progressively getting worse. Today, it's not that cold out and it still takes a few minutes to get it to move into drive or reverse and once you do, you're stuck in limp mode. I'm hoping it would be the solenoid pack or some kind of sensor. Just don't know which one. I wish they made it simpler to read the transmission codes like they do for the engine. Don't have a whole lot a money to work with. Got any advice?

Yeah those are computer controlled transmissions....sounds like a solenoid pack or a sensor of some sort. Sounds like it's time to take it somewhere and have the transmission checked out.

also when u just drop the pan and what not for the filter change, your only changing like 1/3 of the fluid.

But anywho, if it really is taking Minutes to engage, then its new transmission time.

Hello,
My name is Mark I have the same problem
My sister had the car for 3 years and it was
doing it then. You might have the gear oil changed
(not the transmission fluid but the gear oil).
When it does move but won't change to a higher
gear you can bipass the computer by turning the car off
and starting it right back up. I have changed my computer
out and that did not work I am going to change some sencers
this weekend if I find the fix I will let you know.
The one I have has ben doing this for 4 years that i know of
i just started trying to fix the problem.
I hpoe this helps you some untill I find the problem

Thanks Mark. I heard that it's the seals that dry out and so I've temporarily fixed the prob with Lucas Transmission Fix. The minute I put that stuff in, the car went right into gear. It's been about 3-4 weeks now with no trouble at all (knock on wood). Hopefully it will last for a long while as I don't have the cash right now for a new transmission.

Good luck on the tranny !

Your symptoms is very similiar to what happend in my mom's 95 Caravan, 3.0L. The tranny would take forever to engage into gear when cold, not until the engine was completely warmed up would it go into gear smoothly.

This required two transmission rebuilds to correct.

You should have used ATF+4. Here is the TSB that says so: http://www.ertyu.org/~steven_nikkel...1/21-004-04.pdf I just got my tranny flushed and filled with ATF+4 on Friday and it drives so much smoother. I did it at the dealer, who didn't want to do it, so I printed the TSB for them and they did it.

1) A606 is a very, very fragile tranny.
2) ATF +4 can often save trannys that are just starting to go. It will make the tranny grip harder. It should make it last a little longer, but it won't magically cure it.

You may be SOL here apart from your temporary fixes, but here are your options:
1) Let it go until it dies completely
2) Flush it and put in ATF +4. ATF +4 will help condition seals somewhat as well. This is still somewhat of a temporary fix, though.
3) Go to www.car-part.com and find yourself a low mileage transmission, preferrably 2000+, which have been beefed up, but require a little dremmeling to fit a 1st-gen (just for a bolt hole in the mount)
4) Get a new car.

Good luck with your tranny lasting several thousand more miles, but it pains me to say that it's very unlikely. Now is the time to decide how much you really like the car. Keep in mind that a junkyard tranny with 20K miles can be had for around $200, so if you're mechanically inclined (or at least REALLY good at following directions) and have the tools and patience (you've gotta drop part of the exhaust too), then it's not the worst thing in the world.

my 95 trep's trans finally went up with 96k miles on it.

i swapped it out with a 2000 2.7l trans with 36k miles on it..

works and drives like a charm, plus having the 2.7l final drive gears gives it a bit more ass.

:)

switching to ATF + 4 does nothing for a highmilage tranny but let it shift better.

Also. try replacing your transmissions input and output sensors.
if that doest work you will have to check the coil packs curtosy of a deler or just go to a tanny shop and have them repair it. and then drive it till it dies again. :) :thatfunny

chances are the seals in the low reverse piston have hardened up, i've just finished rebuilding the tranny for my 93 trep for that exact same reason. and yes, the clutches take quite a bit of abuse when it just sits in drive or reverse, without actually engaging. chrysler has some out with a new shape for the piston seals, that allows them to move more freely, along with the fact that a new mix is used in the fabrication of these seals, this is why you rarely hear of the newer trannies having this problem. hope this helps.
