Anyone know how the roof rack is attacked to the roof. I hate mine with a passion. I heard of studs sticking up if the rack is removed. I was hoping that they bolted from inside and would only have holes to deal with. Little black rubber plugs would be better than that ugly ass thing.

Seems like all the cars on the lots have the roof rack. I ordered mine without it but I have heard that it is a bolt coming through the roof so when you remove them you have a hole to deal with.

When I was shopping for my Magnum, I only found 1 RT anywhere close to me that had all the options on it that we were looking for. Even the color (Magnesium) was right on. But, it had the roof rack. It was the only RT that I had seen with one installed. To me, it looked horrible. In fact, that was the deal breaker. I finally found exactly what I wanted without the roof rack and I'm really glad that I waited.

Must be a regional thing. Was just at the Dodge dealer the other day, and they have an assortment of SE's, SXT's, and 1 RT. None of them had a roof rack ???

Go figure...

I have the roof rack also and really hated it at first. My magnum is the midnight blue. I took the crossbows off and it seemed to help some. If my car were a light color it would really suck.

Hey RT_AWFD,
Do you have a pic of your car without the crossbow. I've been thinking of doing the same thing.
Thanks!

Can you remember or find out if 1) the rack mounting bolts mount from the top down into a nut plate 2)Or from the bottom up into the rack itself or 3)(I hope not) studs sticking up from the room and nuts holding it on instead of bolts. Thanks in advance

the bolts are welded from inside and they come up thru the top of the roof

Gee, I am just the opposite regarding the roof rack. When I saw a Magnum with a roof rack at the dealership parked next to one without the rack, it was a no brainer for me. I ordered my RT with all available options and yes, I ordered the roof rack! It really gives the car the retro look I like! Guess I'll be the only one around with a roof rack! Oh well..

want another roof rack? I'll work ya a heck of a deal on mine and it may look REALLY retro with two racks on there..
I removed my cross bars yesterday. Helped a little but still the only sore spot on the ride are those ugly old lady rails.
Dunno what they were thinkin with these.
It's probly lost em a bit of bidness.

Well obviously we are on opposite sides of the track when it comes to the roof rack. I hope you enjoy your car without the rack as I am really looking forward to my car arriving from the factory with it.

One question I have though: Why, if you hate the rack so much, did you buy one with a rack? There are plenty of Magnums delivered to dealers without the roof rack.
Not trying to be antogonistic, just curious I guess.

Sincerely,

Greg

Bolt on about 4 off road lights on that sucker and you'll really have one of a kind! :D

I was a victim of Love, Greg.
I puleld up on the lot on a day off. I went in and asked about a pearl black magnum with 20's or bigger (or on donuts so I could add the wheels myself) and he pulled around the prettiest freakin car I've ever seen. I heard angels singing as he pulled it around... even with the roof rack. He asked if I wanted to drive it. One part of me danced while the other called him a ******* for hookin me. I was there to look... or that was what I was telling myself (and my bride).
It was a demo so there was room for hagglin'. There were 3 thousand miles on it and the thought of someone else putting more on her made me wanna secure the deal asap.
I made an offer. This was on a friday. I told em I didn't care what the price ended up being on it or what they gave me for my trade in (a '99 Intrepid). I just told him I wasn't writing a check at all as far as down payment and that my payments had to be 500 per month. They crunched numbers and insulted me with their first counter offer and I split. They called Saturday am and told me they were still crunchin. I went back in and they hadn't cruched enough and again, I split. It was a drag cuz all sunday I knew some doink was out fartin around in my ride. Monday came and after work, I went back in. They landed just over 500 a month but I had em include tt&l.
It was destinty, man. Not quite perfect yet but then, neither am I so we're a good match.
I'd a just rathered get it and have it than wait. I hear all these poor dudes pulling the hair out with 5 month waits and stuff.
Screw that. It's too fun to drive, man.
I aint bitchin. Workin on it is fun. It's a blast to set little goals and achieve them better than the dream. I dig it.

Victim of love, heh?

I know exactly what you mean! The sales people knew exactly what they were doing when they brought that car around to show you. A Pearl Black Magnum would take any certified car nut's breath away! I was in love when I stepped on the lot but after the test drive, well I guess you could say I was delirious!

Here's my advice for what it's worth (about 2 cents I guess)! Keep the car the way it is and don't go trying to mess with the rack. Try and start noticing the ones without the rack and look at yours against theirs. You've gotta admit, the car minus the rack can indeed look a little naked but that's my opinion so all you guys out there with rackless Magnums please don't diss me! Realize that your car is unique and that you don't see nearly as many as the ones without the racks. Then, if in another six months you still 'hate the rack with a passion', take the car to a body shop and see what it will cost to remove it and make it look right without the thing. I'll bet when you get a quote from the shop, you'll start liking that rack a lot more than you thought you ever would (or could)! LOL! Email me off list and I'll share with you how I bought my Magnum. I'm about to run of space so I'll close for now. My email address is tbirds53and64@bellsouth.net

Cheers!

Greg

I guess I'm coming from the other side of the spectrum too. The majority of the Magnums on the lots in my area do not have roof racks, and that's a big reason why I'll probably be custom ordering a Magnum. There's one in town that has everything I want... except the roof rack.
I realize I could get a Mopar removable roof rack as an add-on, but I like the look of the factory roof rack better.

On the Sunday after Christmas I was visiting another city and decided to check out the local Dodge dealership to see if there were any Magnum R/T's on the lot. The ONLY Magnum they had was an R/T in Inferno Red with almost every available option except the roof rack. An architect friend of mine was with me and he agreed as to the 'empty look' to the roof. Like I, he thought the roof rack would really enhance the look of the car. So, I guess some like it and others do not. I'll say one thing, I never see them with the racks so mine will definitely stand out. Looking forward to the delivery date (end of February)!

I guess I am with the minority too. When I was looking for my RT, I did not like the ones on the lot without the roof rack. The roof looks naked without it. I espessially love how the back of it slopes down (obviously it has to) with the slopped roof line.

When I test drove the Magnum, the car I drove was rackless. When I returned from the drive, I passed by one on the lot that had the rack. I compared the two cars while they were near each other and my first thought was the car without the rack looked naked! It's just like the choosing the color. it's a personal thing. I happen to prefer the car with some texture on all that blank sheet metal. That's why I ordered my RT with the rack.

You guys keeping the crossbars on too?
Now that I've removed mine, it's not quite the eyesore it was.
Dunno if painting is even justified now.

I have a Black RT with the roof rack i was not sure if i wanted it or not but my wife liked it. so that was that..... lol on the lot it didnt have the cross bars in and thats how it has stayed. I like the idea of having it so I call hall longer items on the roof straped to the rack then in the car. I have not used it yet, but maybe someday i will. and it is black like the car so it does not stick out as bad. rack or no rack the car is awsome and fast....

Have to disagree on the roof rack. When I went looking for mine it was just as the 06's started coming out so there were only a few of the 05s on the lot and most of the RT's were loaded with the rack. All the options put it outside my budget but the roof rack was a deal breaker anyway. The roof rack destroys those beautiful lines that made me want the car in the first place, and since it was my first new car I was getting what I wanted. Finally found one dealer that had one that fit my criteria.

But hey, glad someone likes the roof rack, those Magnums need bought too.

Be glad you have the factory RACK...mopar's sucks.

I need to haul a 14.5' kayak around and the factory rack is FUBAR. There's only like 2' of spread between the horiz supports and it's not near enough to support a kayak.

I had to add an extra foam support w/strap over the tailgate and even add two more tiedowns on liftgate.

I really really wished I'd held to my guns when buying my RT 05 Mag and gotten rack from factory. Dealer said it would be the same...but he was full of shit!!!

my 05 vanilla has a rack. I have seen lots of RT's without them and yes it looks smooth and accentuates the lines, but since i do a lot of home remodeling (it IS a station wagon), I have put that rack to good use. sure, its a bit scratched up (the rack, I mean) but since the scratches are on the top, it really doesn't matter. Mine came with all the bells and whistles, including the rack, and my wife fell in love with the thing as soon as she saw the colour. I had fallen for the car when i saw the pre-production images in the car mags. Love the car, man.

If you think I'm gonna buy my bike in the back of my $35k car after a day of trailriding, I want some of whatever you're smokin'. The roof rack was a no-brainer. The roof rack adds a ton of utility... and if I didn't want utility, I would have bought a charger instead. There's no question the car looks faster without it, but as several cars in my area have found out, looks can be deceiving :-)
