Hey All,

I saw a few Van guys posting around this forum. I'm surprized there are not more, considering how many of these Vans are on the road (and how long they've been around). :gr_patrio

I have a "new" 2003 1500 LWB Conversion van with minimal frills and the 5.9L motor. It moves around effortlessly.

I'm interested in what performance mods that work on our Vans from the Ram Truck.

Post here with some info/experiences on your van and if you have done or are planning any mods!

Hey Moderators/Administrators,

Think it would be possible to create a forum specific to the Ram Van (A-Van, B-Van etc)? I think the old soldier deserves at least that... :)

Thanks!

Matt

I just bought a '94 B250 Ram Van with Elk Van conversion. It has a 5.2L engine with A518 tranny. Runs great! I'll be doing some mods after my service contract ends...don't want to void it!

I also own a 1969 Dodge A-100 van and a 1969 Dodge A-108 Xplorer 21 motorhome.

My grandfather had a '77 Dodge B-100 Sportsman.....ah the memories.

Hi Dodgevanman!

3 Dodge vans! Wow, I guess you know a little bit about em? :)

You have a point about waiting for the warranty to go out before serious mods... Did you know that auto manufacturers can NOT void your entire warranty if you've done modifications? If they can prove that the mod caused the problem, then they can void the warranty, BUT only on the specific part/system affected. I believe the law is called the Magnuson Act or somthin like that. Although your warranty company may not play by those rules.

I just had a Magnaflow muffler installed today. Just replaced the stock muffler with it. (Although a stainless tip is in the future, next payday maybe!) The sound is awesome! :rck: Very deep powerful tone, yet only very minor drone on the interior. On the highway in OD there is no drone at all!

I was looking to get a dual setup, but there are brake lines right above the left side of the axle that block the way

Anyway, sorry for the ranting!

Come on van guys, I know there are more of us! Post here!:D

Dodgevanman

I wanted to run duals on mine, but since I have the 35 gal. gas tank it overlaps the rear frame rail on the right side and doesn't leave room for a tailpipe. I was thinking of going with a high-flow catalytic converter and a Dynomax Turbo Muffler and maybe enlarging the exhaust to 3". I also wanted to install either a Hypertech or Jet ECM chip and K&N filter. I won't be adding headers since the stock Magnum manifolds flow pretty well. I'm not going to go crazy with this engine....at least not to begin with. That 5.2L needs some more thump to move that heavy van around.

03RAMVAN360
10-13-2004, 12:23 PM
I have the 35gal tank too, but I think there is clearance, but they also moved the spare tire to the underside so I've got that to deal with too... I could relocate the spare (Tire carrier?) and have the pipes split off after the rear axle, but I think that would look silly from behind. I didn't know that the Magnum manifolds already flow well, sweet.

What would be the benifit to going full 3" exhaust? I believe we are 2.5" stock.

I'm not looking to build a drag demon (although that would be one hell of a sleeper! :thatfunny ) I'm just trying to get some more power and gas mileage out of the motor, as well as increase its longevity. I've been looking at hypertech and they already make one for an 03 Ram w/5.9L, but don't know if that'll work with the Van?

What do you think about switching to a 180tstat? I know it would be a PITA to change in our vans... Cooler engine, longer life?

Is your van a 2500 (3/4 ton)? What makes a 2500 different from a 1500? I figure the 2500 is more heavy duty? I saw a high top LWB Dogde van on ebay once, it was the 2500 version but with the 3.9L V6!! Talk about a DOG.

Dodgevanman
10-13-2004, 12:44 PM
Yes my van still uses the old B250 (3/4 ton) designation. I think in either 95 or 96 is when they started the 1500, 2500, 3500 thing on the vans....trucks switched over before that. So yes my van is a 3/4 ton. For along time Dodge built they're conversions on 3/4 ton chassis and even on 1 ton chassis for the Maxi-Van conversions.

Your gas tank is on the left hand side (filler door in center of van) where my tank is still at the rear. I think the vans changed to this in 98. Your exhaust exits on the passenger side where mine exits on the driver's side. Since my gas tank is at the rear it doesn't leave me any room for dual exhaust, so I was considering a larger single exhaust to make up the difference. 3" exhaust flows better than 2.5" since the pipe is bigger in diameter, but I wouldn't go much bigger....MAYBE 3.5" depending on engine mods.

03RAMVAN360
10-13-2004, 01:02 PM
Cool, so Dodge switched to a lighter duty 1/2 for Conversions (except Maxi) around the 95-96 time frame. Wonder why? I know '94 was the first year of the "major" redesign since '79? Aerodynamic styling up front with trademark Dodge crossheir grill and new taillights. In '98 Dodge gave it a pointier nose and relocated the gas tank and spare tire (non Maxi) and moved the exhaust to the pass side. They also changed the turn signal light lenses to orange. I prefer the 94-97 clear style much better. -That seemed like a step backward? Wonder if I could retrofit those lenses? I know for '03 Dodge bumped up the wheel size to 16" standard. There is a nice set on Ebay with Bridgestone Dueler tires (new takeoffs).

My parents had a '94 G20 SWB Chevy van (old style) w/4.3L V6. Thats what got me into vans, although i'd have to say the Dodge is definately superior to that van.

No...the clear style turn signal lenses won't work on 98-03 models. That new front end is completely different. The headlights, grill, fenders, turnsignal lenses, etc. are all different. Because the 98-03 nose angles out, all those mentioned parts are angled accordingly.

GREAT NEWS!!!! Looking forward to it! Thanks again RAM MAN!

Because the 98-03 nose angles out, all those mentioned parts are angled accordingly.

Yes, I had a chance to look at the 94-97 turn signal housing, and while it does look like it would bolt on, it would look recessed on my '03 and give the headlights a "bug-eyed" look LOL.

How long have you had your '94 Dodgevanman?

Cool, I've had my van for just over a month... I'm averaging just over 13MPG with mostly around town driving.... I knew what I was getting into when I bought it in regards to gas mileage... so I won't b*tch about gas prices...:drivingz:

i have a 5.2 equiped 99 conv. van. i have installed a k&n air filter, flipped over the air filter lid, and installed a 3" exhaust from the cat back with a flowmaster delta 40 and a 4.5" stainless tip. this weekend i put in royal purple synthetic in the engine and diff. and put on a chrome diff. cover. i too only get around 11-13 mpg even with higher octane fuel. do any of your vans have locking diffs.? mine does and i also have 3.55 gears. it is a hit at the local cruise nights when i go out and smoke off both of the back tires! i'll have to post some pics.

Hey all, I just registered because of the lack of good info about 1976 Dodge Tradesman 200 I could find on the net. I have two Dodge vans, the 76 Tradesman, and a 1989 Ram 250... The Ram 250 needs some frame tweakage so a windshield can be put in, and it has several minor problems that I may or may not attempot to fix later. For now I'm loving the B200. I bought it a month ago for $250 with the original 64,000 miles... I'll take some pics of both and post them later. Since I bought the B200 I've replaced the freeze plug, altenator, and replaced all the tires... Next is either getting the interior insulated, padded, and covered in black shag, or painting over it's original rust orange/red coat. It's going to be an adventure.

Hi all, just registered after discovering there's actually a forum for Dodge vans! I have a 1991 Dodge Ram Van B250 with the LA block 318 cu. in. engine, pushing 230hp to the wheels, with 340 lb-ft of torque.

http://membres.lycos.fr/bhp66/vanpresent.jpg

I've been looking all around for performance upgrades, because I plan on pushing this engine to it's maximum potential. I'm a speed freak in a tuner car club with a van...being around all those tuned up Mustangs, Civics, 240SX's, etc make me want to make my van as fast or faster than them just because I like vans and I want to prove they aren't something to be underestimated.

Anyway, I hope to get to know you all, and maybe we can all get together somewhere for a meeting someday.

Hi Guy's,

Some of you guys know me from Vannin.com

But for those that don't let me introduce my self.

My handle is Cactusdoug and I live in the southern end of the Mojave Desert of So Cal in the Joshua Tree/29 Palms area.

I have 2 vans, only one of which I'll talk about here. (the other ones an Aerostar LOL)

I have a '90 Dodge B250 Ram Van.

I call it The Flyin' Brick.

It has a 360 with EFI, and an electric overdrive automatic tranny.
I have a CB, AM/FM Cassete, and a TV with VCR.

I have the mid 90's Dodge Van, swept spoke wheels with the stupid black plastic center caps, I have painted the wheels satin Black, with big off road type tires.

I painted the front grill satin black, and put on the red pin striping tape. I plan on painting the lower body satin black, and using more red pin striping to divide it from the white.

I put on a light bar with four 100 watt lights, and 55 watt "Alley Lights" on each side, with dual 2 foot Fire Stick CB antennas on the roof.

It also has two big tinted RV type windows on each side.

I'm going to install a brush guard on the front, (if I can find one) and an off road type cargo rack on the roof to replace the "station wagon type rack".

I live in the desert and do a lot of driving on dirt roads and off road, so I'm setting it up kinda' like a pre runner truck.

It's a little different than most of the other vans you see fixed up, I've included a few pics. I hope you guys like it.

These pics are about a year old and I don't have a "Happy Face" sticker on the windshield anymore.LOL

Cheers, Cactusdoug

I use my van 10 hours a day 5 days a week, and have had very few problems. I lost the tranny about a year ago, but that was because a line let go while on the freeway, and then it was too late. It now has 220000 HARD kms on it, and still runs very strong. Right now, though the calipers are rattling alot because of broken hardware, which I have on order.

Hello everyone.

I just purchased my '90 B150, V6 for $250.00, put in a new starter
and currently running all over the northern florida area.

It needs some work, but for the price I couldn't pass it up.

*needs a new drivers side vent window and the cargo area
needs some floor work.*

I need a bit of advice though. I'd like to put on new tires and rims
but need some information about the widest tires and sizes I could
put under the van, without additional modification work.

I've got the 235/75 r15's on it now. But would like something to
look a bit better.

Thanks in advance.
Bill in Florida.

275-60-152 are about the biggest you can get away with. On a 10" wide rim they may stick out just past the wheel-well if the rim has less that 3 3/4" backspacing, but on an 8" rim you'll be fine.

Check out my new driver.

CIPA Mirrors, slide over the stock ones and tighten with a screw instead of rubber straps (which I hate). You still use your stock mirror and then the CIPA has an extension mirror.

The mirror is ok, but the wind resistance on my mirrors tends to push them in, I can't seem to get the bolts under the mirror cover tight enough to keep them in place.

Well I’ll chime in with my ride. I’m the proud owner of a ’77 B300 Maxi-window van with a 360 and a 2bbl, deep-tint windows, classic Keystone wheels, dual Flowmasters that exit in front of the rear wheels (avoids the 35 gal. tank) …sounds mean. I’d include pics but it’s really kinda ratty.

250,000+ miles and had a valve job at 200K, still great compression and oil pressure. I traveled all over in this 3 years ago and averaged 14 mpg. I drove it for over a year before I realized it was about 1.5 to 2 qts. low on trans fluid. The previous owner had never checked it because he had no manual and couldn’t find the dipstick. The low-fluid indicator light was gone so you had to remove the doghouse and check it, which I did but in PARK which will give you an erroneous reading (newbies beware). After finding this out and filling it properly, it shifted much better…big surprise. A testament to the durability of the Torqueflite 727 because 2 years and 25K later it’s still working fine!

I drive it less now and use it mainly for tow-barring Hondas and Toyotas I fix up or for the occasional swap-shop trip.

It’ll run forever….

No,she runs pretty good. Recently I've installed a rebuilt carb, distributor and wiper motor. Need to get the AC working and convert to R134. Will add short resonators to quiet it down a little more (neighbors). When I bought it, she had these 4" megaphones and ROARED. I replaced those with regular 2" pipes but it still rumbles.

By the way dvm, is the Explorer the one with the dropped floor, or is that a Mobile Traveller?

Dodgevanman
04-11-2005, 08:49 PM
The Xplorer 21 has the dropped floor. There is a thread on the Dodge Vans forum where I have pictures of my '69 that I'm restoring. I think the thread is called Xplorer 21 Project, or something like that.

VanMoreSon

I guess you meant major problems with the frontend. Just creaking and sometimes popping..it rides OK and isn't dangerous but at this age I know it's due. I've replaced the centerlink and outer tie-rod ends but doing the BJs and bushings would be a job.

I checked out your Xplorer..cool old camper! Don't think I've ever seen one before. So the floor is dropped just on one side and you can stand up? Better aerodynamics than the turtle-tops..and they weren't even worrying about gas mileage much in '69!

Very nice A-100 too...

Dodgevanman
04-12-2005, 06:45 AM
Yep, the floor is dropped 12" on the passenger side right at that side door. It kind of stinks because I can't run dual exhaust. I'm going to run a single 3" pipe...it's all I can do.

That orange A-100 in my pic belongs to a guy on the A-100 Yahoo group that I'm on. He's installed 4 wheel disc brakes and a Corvette LS1 engine. I don't agree with the Chevy engine, but a nice truck overall.

Please add my van to the list: I've got a 2002 Ram Van 1500 Elk conversion with the 5.2L LWB.

Does anyone know if minor modifications like adding a transmission cooler would affect the warranty? My pop-up trailer is only 1000 lb fully loaded, but I'll be doing some mountain road travel and want to avoid problems.

Thanks!

I wouldn't think it would affect the warranty, but it will definitely prolong the life of your transmission. Summit Racing sells a combo engine oil/trans. fluid cooler that's really nice.

Hi guys:

I've read every post here - it's great to see the variety of Ram Vans and earlier Dodge vans you all own.

I think I was drawn to buy a Caravan first, then to trade up to our newly acquired 1996 Ram B-2500 Conversion Van 318 (Contempo), by my positive experience with my '97 Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel Pickup.

From what I've gathered from many comments on various threads, the Ram Vans share quite a few engine / powertrain bits with the trucks, making them somewhat compatible. Would you say this is correct ?

If so, my B-2500 probably is near exact in it's powertrain with the gasser 2500 2 wd Ram Trucks....

One thing I was wondering, is this modified throttle body unit being offered as a special here that necessary to increase the performance of the 318 ? I've already done some basics, like Syn fluid everywhere, low restriction Amsoil air filter, etc

Gotta go now, thanks guys for sharing the pictures of your rigs - I'll try to upload some very soon.

Thanks David B. Ram Van Man

I never noticed this thread before.

Mine is an '03 1/2 ton conversion by Waldoch. It is a minimal conversion, but does have a DVD player and a flip down TV. It is a low top.
It has a 360 with the 46 RE tranny and 3.55 gears with limited slip. It has a factory towing package also.

I replaced an '96 Chevy Express Starcraft conversion with the Dodge. The Dodge has it's quirks as it is an old design, but it has more power and has been trouble free which is something I can't say about the Chevy.

I really wish DCX would have designed a proper replacement for our B vans as they could really have given the Chevys a run for thier money.
Just think....clean sheet design (like the Express was) with the addition of the new Hemi for half and 3/4 tons and a Cummins or a hemi for the 1 ton crowd.
There are alot of businesses that miss these old Dodges.
I can't see owning a Sprinter as I really don't want to be driving a glorified delivery van.
I understand that businesses love them due to massive head room, but that goes along with the delivery van type of vehicle or an RV conversion.

Thanks,
I picked it up in November '05. It was used.
It was origionally sold in the summer of '04, so with 22,000 mi it was almost new.
I did have to put new tires on it though as the origional ones were shot.

RamVanMan
04-11-2006, 08:05 PM
In my book, that's new ! Nice thing is that you shouldn't have to care for much mechanical issues for quite some time. Just curious what factor made you decide to obtain your Ram ? For us, it was seating - the minivan was full to capacity - no room for Wal-Mart trips !

Your Ram seems so new, in comparison to ours which was 9 years old, but cared for so well, I could barely tell it was used. Cosmetically that is, but mechanically I had to 'sort' some things out. Nothing big, but like the radiator was shot, though the seller included a new in box 3 row radiator, I changed all the hoses, complete tune up.

The guy who smogged it said "a new van wouldn't run any cleaner - this engine in primo shape." That was nice to hear and has been proven correct by 20,000 trouble free miles since.

The trans had a funny surging at highway speed that I've mostly worked out - it needed a trans cooler, new throttle position sensor & switched to Redline C+ synthentic AFT, all of which eliminated the surging about 90 %. (other threads have indictated the 46 RE trans is infamous for funny glitches !).

Oh well, sorry for going on so, but it's good to locate some other Ram Van owners so we can learn by 'comparing notes'. The store just called, my front Bilstein shocks are in. I'll report back on how they work when I can.....

Take Care, David B. Ram Van Man :gr_patrio

I picked the Dodge this time around because I was sick of working on my former Chevy and I prefer Mopars.
I had also bought into all the crap that the trannies in Dodges were junk at the time which didn't help. My Chevy tranny started slipping at 75,000 mi. That was a 4-60 LE GM 4 speed auto.
I also wanted more power as the Vortech 305 in the Chevy was a gutless wonder when it came to towing.

I bought the Chevy to replace my old '94 Plymouth Voyager. The Voyager's 3 speed auto died at 90,000 miles.
We needed more room too.
The best 4 speed auto tranny I have had was in my Concorde and that was supposed to be the tranny from hell. It made it to 150,000 with no maintenance before it started acting up.
My best 3 speed auto is in my '75 Dodge 4x4 behind a big block.

As long as your putting on an external oil cooler, throw on an in-line filter too.

Hey Guzzi Dude: do you use an in-line filter on your trans ? Benefits ? Is it a simple screen you clean periodically ? Who offers it ?

I overlooked this idea, but come to think of it, another thread here on trans issues mentioned that they suspected there was some sort of 'deteroriating clutch material' inside the Mopar Trans that might dump enough material to clog I think they said the 'solenoid packs' - (admittedly, I'm not real clear on what that exactly is....) if this is so, a filter might be in order....

Can you or anyone comment further ? thanks ! David B. Ram Van Man :gr_patrio

Yes, Nate, I'll check out that spin on filter system for the ATF / trans from Summit. Could be one cheap way to avoid the Trans shop !

On another note, I just tested the Van after installing the Bilsteins on the front - very, very nice. Handles significantly better - bumps are softer, crosswinds hardly felt at all. Might even get better as the 'wear in'. Lots of windy mountain roads to test them on here !

One of you all suggested the Addco rear sway bar - ordering it today. Oughta make a big difference for this high top Van !

They do indeed. What puzzles me is the huge cost for the
'BD in line Transmission filter from Summit @ $ 249.00 vs. the one from JC Whitney for $ 49.95.

The descriptions make the seem identical. Not sure why one is 5 times the price ! FYI :

Hey, my name is Jake. I`m from Pittsburgh, and I know you are jeaolous of the Stillers!
I recently bought this awesome B250 conversion van. It`s a "VanCraft", 1990 with an unknown amount of miles on it, the odometer was busted when I got it. 8 Cylinder.
It`s perfect for hauling music gear and banging groupies! Just kidding (about the groupies).
But there is an automatic bed in the back.
One of the amazing things about this van- Despite it`s age, there are no leaks whatsoever.
I got some pics on my myspace page-
I need to figure out how to upload them here.

Hi all fellow vanners. I just purchased a 1991 150 Ram Van. Its got 140,000 miles, yes miles. The van was made here in Canada, then I guess sold in the USA, and recently bgrought back to Canada. A previous owner had to install a DRL Module, to get it safetied (daytime runing lights), but the speedo and odometer are still in miles. I will post pictures after I give it a bath. We are on water restrictions here, and I can only wash on even numbered days, because my house is even numbered. Its going to be a summer cruiser, so I'm gonna do some work to her, and keep her out of the snow and salt. Dodgevanman, I guess you can call it "simulated duals". Single exhaust that splits after the axle. I LOVE the look of duals but as most all of us Dodge van owners know, there's not enough space under there. The fact that I have a Maxi with the extra room around the tank makes room for the crossover pipe. I'll try to remember to take a pic underneath sometime.
Thanks for the compliments guys.

Dodgevanman
06-02-2006, 06:52 AM
Oh I see. I don't have a maxi so that wouldn't work for me. If I had the 22 gallon tank I could run true duals out the back. Another option would be to run duals out the left side only, but I really don't like that. I was also thinking I could run duals, but have them exit in front of the rear tire, but I need to look up my state laws regarding that on a newer vehicle.

I also own a trusty B-series full-size Dodge van/wagon. Mine is an 85, 318, 2-BBL, SWB with 8-passenger seating, 2-tone paint, etc... Despite the fact that it's 21 years old, has 219,000 miles on it and has seen some pretty severe service over the years, towing trailers, hauling bikes, cargo and people, it is still in remarkably good shape, with the original paint, no rust, always starts, runs and gets me there.

I've always been impressed with the B-series due to it's longevity of production (since 1971) and it's good driving characteristics which make them ideal for shuttle work. A low floor, short hood, tight turn radius and solid driveline all have made them a popular success.

GuzziDude
07-07-2006, 12:37 PM
I enthusiastically agree... the B-series vans are great. I've owned a '78 B-200 for the past eleven years, and it has been one of my favorite vehicles. I live in Minnesota, the land of rusty cars, and when I found this kid selling his van fresh from California, I had to buy it. It cost me 300 as is... was over heating, running like crap, and had a busted up passenger front quarter... I drove it home, put in a new thermostat, cleaned and straightened and replaced missing linkage on the crappy carter thermoquad carb, undercoated the underside, and was able to drive the van for the next five years. :)
So i've had this van sitting in my garage for the last six years due to a failed tranny. Well I'm soon ready to rock and roll again! :rck:
This Winter I FINALLY got around to rebuild the tranny, and while I had that out I figured I might as well check the main bearings, add new hi flow oil pump, new gaskets and seals, refurbish the oil pan, clean prime paint undercoat the under, add tranny cooler, and filter, new exhaust, rebuild the gas tank, add a tow package, get rid of the crappy carter and change the intake manifold to a Torker 340 with new Holly Economaster carb, clean engine, new valve cover gaskets, and add rear heater. Several months later I'm almost back on the road... Soon Soon Soon. Well more later... off to the junk yard, still more to do... Keep on vannin'

GuzziDude
07-08-2006, 01:27 AM
:rck: Well, back from the junk yard... scored me a new instrument panel, wiper/washer parts, springs, hardware, ect...

So can I modify my factory standard on/off wiper system/motor with complete parts from a donor vehicle @ the Junk yard? easy/difficult?

...oh ya, the motor mounts and tranny mounts are replaced too...

I need a new steering column... and the JY man said only a '78 in a '78...
T/F? :help:

Dodgevanman

I think that may be true as far as the steering column goes. You see in '78 the column and dash changed from previous models, but the nose was the same as 71-77 models. In '79 they lengthened the nose which would mean a slightly longer steering column. So the man is probably right, '78 only steering column.

What do you want to modify in the wiper system?

Hey there, got a vanner here born and raised in Cali and living in East Texas. Van's in the sig, just bought it two weeks ago. I'm planning to probably upgrade the TV / VCR so that I can use my PS2 and maybe watch friend's DVD's; the second isn't a priority though as I only have VHS. Otherwise it's just cheap mods, maintenance, roadtrips and enjoyment.

It's not overly well optioned out like most conversions, but it is comfortable like you wouldn't believe and pretty sharp from the outside. I've always wanted a Cadillac, and this is the closest I have ever come to being coddled like in a Cad. Even better, the interior and engine are so clean you could eat off them, the carpet looks like it was put in just last week, and even all the maintenance records in the owners' manual are filled out complete with copious notes on what was used, what was requested, etc. An incredible find and I got it at wholesale price from a local dealer, no less.

Anyway, I've only had it two weeks and I've only put about 70 miles on it, but so far it rocks. I'm not looking forward to figuring out gas mileage though; I'm no stranger to gas guzzlers, but something tells me this is going to be even worse than I'm used to.

Hey guys, first time poster here. Didnt use to be much of a van person, but im a hotrodder at heart. And a subcontactor by trade. So since I needed a van I have the closest thing to a late model hotrod I could get.

02 3500 with a Magnum 360 and 3.91 gears.

Nothing fancy, all stock for now. Plain white cargo van. But I have about 9 payments left and then it will be time for a few upgrades. Probably starting with some nice wheels. And then on to exhaust.

I have a '78 SWB that had a slant six, 2bbl+Auto. I put a 360 with Auto, 8-3/4 rear end and sway bar on the front; all parts from the junkyard rebuilt myself. Later I found a Sure-grip differental also from the yard and wider 8.5" rims for the rear from yard also. Addco rear sway bar +class IV tow hitch bought new.
All of these mods are now installed on my '71 LWB with new 360 engine, rear disc brakes, etc.

Hi All,
Just picked up a 1975 B200 cargo van with a 3.7L /6, a 36 gal tank, and it has 1 ton springs in the rear. The van has a few issues, but all-&-all its in good shape. This is my first Dodge and I am impressed how sturdy the vehicle is.

I tuned it up over the weekend, and its running so much better. The carb is dieseling a little bit though.

Welcome to DT Bill!

Sweet van you have there! I have a '77 that I'm fixing up, but I'm putting the early style (71-73) grille in it to give a more aggressive look.

While not a powerhouse, the slant six will last forever.

B200Bill,

Dodge had a nice Super /6 that had a 2-bbl carb for the engine back around 1976-80. I'm not sure if it is a drop in to fit, but maybe it will pep up the 3.7 /6 (225cid) you have now.

Dodgevanman
10-02-2006, 06:41 AM
The Super Six would drop right in, but you would need to find the "van" style air cleaner. The big air cleaner used on cars won't fit because of the dog box. The van style had the hole for the carburetor offset to bring the air cleaner housing inward.

B200Bill
10-02-2006, 08:57 PM
Yeah but, if I were going change out my engine, I'd rather throw in a V8 over another 6 cylinder.

Could I not change the manifold to suit a 2bbl and replace the exaust for a larger one? In essence, isn't that what a Super 6 is?

FYI: I have no plans to swap out my current engine, maybe if it blows up. It's running great and I bought it mainly as a Home Depot runner. :rck:

Dodgevanman
10-03-2006, 06:35 AM
I think the cam is a bit different too, but it's not so radical that you couldn't put a Super Six setup on your current engine. The intake and exhaust manifolds are different as you mentioned. But I don't blame you, if your engine is running good, I wouldn't mess with it.

One other thing, the Super 6 option was not available in the Great State of California due to emission laws. So one would have a real hard time finding one locally. However, vehicles with the model year 1975 or older are now exempt from the smog laws. Which is one of the reasons why I purchased my B200.

Hi everyone! I'm in the same boat as Donzie. I'm looking for a few things to spice this thing up. One of the areas I'm having a little trouble with is finding some aftermarket wheels and tires for it. The stock ones are 15", and I would like to go to 17". It's a little tough to find wheels and GOOD tires in that diameter. I would like to have a quiet ride and good foul weather traction. Continental has a crosscontact lx in a 236/65-HR17 with a load rating of 108H XL for around $97. But it seems to be difficult to find 17" rims. Anyone out there find any 17" rims, and what tires did you come up with?

Hey there Welcome to the van forums ! You'll be sure to get lots of help here - these are some great guys and van veterans !

On the rims & tire question, you may have to settle for 16" rims, don't know of anyone - that I've seen in person or read here that fit's a 17" - doesn't mean it's impossible, just rare.

A super experienced tire shop can probably tell you. Our Ram vans have small wheel wells - so clearance is an obstacle.

Also, consider that a 'quiet ride' with 17"s don't exactly go together. If you could fit a 17" (might necessitate a small lift of the suspension), the sidewalls, that is your aspect ratio (the xx in say, 235/xx R16) will likely be on the thin side, to keep the overall diameter of the tire & rim within the limited clearance wheelwells.

This will tend towards reducing the 'road cushioning' effect of taller sidewalls. Shorter sidewalls, wider road contact will mean tighter handling, at some expense of road comfort.

Hey All,
Here's my "new" ride. It's a '77 Xplorer (based on a 3500 maxi)with 122k miles. It's got a 360 with a 2bbl carb. The tranny is a 727 torqueflite and mechanically everything seems good. The steering's a little loose (I hope I can adjust the box) and I need to have the rocker panels redone but all in good time. I haven't gotten to the mileage yet...filling that 37gal tank is a scary thought!
I had a couple of vans (Chevy) back in the day, but this is my first van since then. It's way cool, although it is a bit large for a daily driver. I'm gonna change out the seats for some later models with arm/headrest. The original two tone metallic blue seats are mint! I changed the rim/tire setup almost before i got the unit home. The original tire wheel combo was 8.75x16.5 but I changed them for American Outlaws with LT 2.45/75x16. (I had to do a bit of "hammer work" on the front wheel wells to clear the tires.) It came with a killer sound system, Sony in dash CD, 600w Kenwood amp, Fosgate speakers, plus it has all the standard RV stuff. So like the song says, "I'm ready...ready as anybody can be, "

Hey Everyone, my name is Ray and I found this site a while ago signed up but didn't post. I have just been lurking allot. So today I decided to introduce myself and my Van.

The Ride:
A 1997 SW Primetime Conversion Dodge 2500 Van powered by a 3.9L v6 with 74k Miles
I installed a Fastman throttle body and a K&N Air Filter to help out on the hilly roads of the Poconos, witch it did a wonderful Job at and got rid of the lag when I stepped on the gas. I just had the transmission rebuild 500 Miles ago after it died on my way home from a trip to NJ. And I replaced the stock stereo Head unit with a Pioneer P780MP.

Why I Love it:
Room for Friends.
Easy for a large guy such as myself to get in and out.
Gets me where I need to go.
And I just think all pre-Sprinter Dodge Vans look damn cool.

The only Problem I am having with it right now is the Cat is rattling like crazy its really quite a loud rattle especially when its Idling. I know I am going to get a new one soon just don't know witch one yet. If anyone has got suggestions please do tell me I am looking for a Direct-Fit cat.

Thanks for posting pics, too it helps us appreciate your vans.

Fred, did you have to search hard to find the X-plorer unit or was it's discovery just happenstance ? Can you share the cost & condition (appears very clean outside) ?

I'd be curious to know what years those units were made, if anyone can say !?

My Van is a '96 B 2500 High Top conversion, (pics in my Gallery area, if you care to look) mostly stock with a few mods. It has the 318 and seems ready to run forever.

Runs great now I've gone through the trans & fixed up the cooling system.

Whenever I see a new Sprinter, I say, 'wow', look how much worse we could look, for $$$ how much more !'.

[Funny, I almost bought a Sprinter two years ago, just before we discovered the B-series......]

Best Regards,

David B.

They're out there...I'm not sure what exact years they were built but I'd say approx '71-'95 (plus or minus). I think the Sprinter based Xcursion is the successor to the Xplorer.

Actually there's one on Ebay right now.

I've got two golden oldies; a 1979 B-100 and my "new" 1981 B-250 custom Sportsman, which I'm still debugging.

The '79, which was my high school baby, has seen better days. It is mostly being used for trips to the building supply stores, and storing stuff; a far cry from it's glory days.

I intend to have some fun with the B-250 and turn it into a sort of science experiment.

I just bought an Innovate LM-1 air/fuel ratio analyzer, and also an LM-2. http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/lm1.php
It has a wideband oxygen sensor for measuring a wide range of air/fuel mixtures, and a clamp on ignition pickup. I can monitor live engine performance data while driving using my laptop computer! This would allow me to fine tune my carburetor over it's entire range by changing jets, adjusting mixture, power valve, & etc. I may be able to tune the entire engine system by recalibrating some of the EGR components actuation points and tweaking when things occur. It's not going to be a racer, but I'd like to see just how far I can go with the stock components, when they are able to be adjusted in a scientific manner.

Hi all,
Recent addition to the vanning world, glad to find this site. Have been secretly wanting a "70's" van for some time. Just purchased this 1977 Dodge B100 Panel Van. REAL P-O-S, has ALL of the usual flaws plus some (big hole cut in the roof?!). BUT... it is a shorty, it does have a nice 71-73 stainless grille, no big windows (in sides), it's a factory 4-on-the-floor (albeit with a 1 Bbl Slant Six, but that is not necessarily a flaw!) and I can put smoked plexiglass on the roof!.
Needs a LOT of work... Already re-wired under the hood & lights throughout, voltage regulator, wiper motor & bled brakes just to get it home. Next will be the usual old-new car routine of steam cleaning everything (Inside is bare save 2 mystery bucket seats & "most of the dash"), going through the gaskets/fluids/tune up and generally tidying up a bit.
Plans include rebuild steering & suspension w/lower springs, flares & spoiler, smooth front bumper, roll pan, side pipes, Ansen Sprints, etc. Keeping the outside clean, likely black & chrome, maybe flames?
No idea what to do in the interior. Would like to have a 70's flavor, but without the shag & vinyl, and with a few modern updates. Stock-rod flavor. Would kind of like to leave a way to load my Virago 1100 in the back, so floor plan is tricky. Any ideas?
Anyway, thanks for looking at my pics. Will post more as time goes by & things get done.

Welcome to the site. Thats a great looking van you got there. As for your interior, it all depends on what else you want to use it for.(ie. camping) But you could make bench seats, over the wheel wells, and hinged along the side of the van, so you can fold them up, and still have room for your bike. You could also mount a table in the middle, with a removable leg. So when camping, and sleeping, you just pull the leg off the table, drop the table top down between the two benchs, and there you have it, a bed.

Smmarkfan,

That van looks S-H-A-R-P! Just the black and chrome appeal makes it classic but modern. Yes, I'll agree with Nate, those bumpers are in great shape too!

Yes, forget the shaggy plush carpet and do something more than the 70's thing.

For starters, a rear rubber floor mat with stainless hold-down rails and clips would make it so S-W-E-E-T. Plus, it would be very easy to keep clean. Plus, on the rear inside side walls, place chrome/stainless loop hangers to strap in the Virago 1100 in the back.

It seems Dodges-3 has some good points for a modular and useful setup that could change when needs arise.

Well, this has been a busy weekend. Got most of the under-hood wiring issues figured out and did a LOT of clean up & painting. My buddy Dale & I spent about 25 hours on it Saturday & Sunday. I must give props to Dale, his patience & talent are absolutely invaluable to me & this project. Cannot do it without him, period & exclamation point!
Here are some before/after pics from this weekend.

Actually looking to LOSE the rear bumper all together & build a roll pan. The tag will swing up to allow access to hitch.
Here's one for ya... how about an after-market, self-contained, in-dash Heat & A/C unit? Can use H2O pump for heater, but would rather have electric compressor built into unit, as opposed to hanging one on the engine. No roof unit. Anyone heard of such a thing?
By the way, stereo (for now) and more today. Cut & carpeted the lower door panels for 6X9 Kickers (which I plan to integrate into final A/V system) & added a VR3 CD400-SDU head unit. Pretty cool head unit for being so cheap, accepts SDRAM & USB connections, plus has a plug for IPOD. NEVER NEED A CD AGAIN!! ($79.87 @ Wal-Mart.)
Also did seat covers, painter shifter & added Hurst "Pistol-Grip" knob, installed cutoff switch for electric radiator fan and other little stuff. More fun to drive every day.
More soon,

The only thing I can tell ya on the HVAC is to check Vintage Air.

Sounds like you're van is coming along nicely. Good deal!

new to the site, i've got an '87 b250 with a 318. i've put dual exhaust on it, Flowmasters and am thinking about headers. would they help my gas milage any? it's got 67000 miles. i was also looking at some wheels, but i'm not sure what the bolt circle is. can anyone help?

thanks

Dodgevanman

Bolt circle is 5 on 5.5"

Headers will help low-end torque, but won't give you better fuel mileage.

What kind of mileage are you getting?

There aren't a whole lot of things that you can do to a "rolling brick" to increase the fuel mileage that's of any significance. Just make sure that the engine is properly tuned up and that the filters are clean, and also make sure your tires are properly inflated.

Hi Guys,

In my mind headers don't help low end torque because they flow big amount of gas. If you look for torque you have to lightly retain exhaust gas.

Headers are good for high rpm breathing and for sound ;) . But with a stock old engine (with stock small valves heads) this is not a good idea.

My advise would be to keep the stock exhaust manifolds and to add a H-pipe to your dual exhaust. This will increase torque. The best with a stock 318 is to make a dual exhaust in quite small diameter tubing like 2" for exemple, with the h-pipe.

To have the best fuel milage you must first look at the settings like carburetor, filters, remove A/C if there is one, and check timing.

Chris,

Well, saving gas in these critters is a science in itself. ;)

For the older Ram Vans, yes, the carb and AC would need to be looked at. For the generation-2 Ram Vans, the Magnum engines provide more power and better fuel economy.

The gen-2's have railed fuel injection and more fuel minded electronic controls in the PCM. Also, the gen-2's have before and aft O2 sensors. The trick is having everything well tuned, a clean IAC, 5W30 in the cooler months and 10W30 in the warmer months, 75W90 rear axle fluid, and if your garage handy under the hood, my Mod The Crankcase Breather will keep the air filter really clean from oil film or deposits. http://www.dodgetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114669&highlight=crankcase

Another good thing to have to save fuel is low resistance/friction tires. Plus, with any tires, keep them properly inflated.

With the 12-passenger Ram Van/Wagon, I'm almost nearing 18mpg highway. Other than the 15-passenger versions, the 12-passenger gets the least respect for fuel economy. My biggest gain lately for improved fuel economy was switching over to a copper/brass cap-n-rotor and rolling better tires.

Hey guys,

I just thought I would check in.I am new here, and new to the Dodge Vans.I know Stev from another forum, and another member on here that is also a member at the TDR like me. I own a 2001 Dodge Ram Wagon 2500 8 passenger van with the 5.2 litre engne, and it has 100k miles on it.I have only owned it about two months or less, but I like it.I bought after having sold my 2003 Ram 1500 quad cab Hemi truck due to saving some money on payments.I bought the van with the intentions of using it to haul the family around sparingly, and tow my 5000lb travel trailer on camping trips.

I have been going through things thanks to Stev, and tomorrow I plan on replacing the radiator in it just for some piece of mind on our long camping trip up to Lake George,NY soon.Dp ypu guys think it would be wise t oreplace the wayer pump as well while I am in there,or should I wait until it shows signs of needing replacement? I bought the radiator, and a thermostat allready, and I hope to get that done tomorrow, but I was waiting on the water pump due to the cost, and it not realy needing replacement yet.I am only doing the radiator because while it isn't leaking I would rather replace it in my garage then on the side of the road. How about hoses, replace them as well? Thanks in advance.

Hello Chris, welcome to the Ram Van forums ! Any friend of Stev's is a friend of ours, eh ?

Before I chime in on your rig, let me say Stev I just got a long cruising trip to Dallas & back in (325 mi) and, unloaded, not towing, I got 19 mpg. Best ever. It may like hot humid weather ?

(Now I've done every conceivable trick to increase efficiency....to much to list here)

BTW, I use the heavy axle lube 75w140, too. Mainly cause I tow occassionally. Think the ligher lube would work as well ?

Congrats on the Ram Van acqusition. Sounds like a nice rig - can you post pics ? Sounds more practical for your situation than the Ram truck, too.

Is the radiator plugged up ? Or do you just fear getting hot while towing, and hoping to cool things better ?

I was fortunate to get a new rad with my rig, in a box.

(BTW, two years ago we acqured our 1996 B 2500 high top conversion van w 318 / 5.2)

There was lots of rust in my radiator - open the cap and rusty residue would float on the coolant. The whole inside the the block was horribly rusty. I flushed the entire block - had to punch through the DS block drain hole with a screwdriver it was so badly crusted with rust - huge chunks came out upon flushing.

Anyhow, if you are having cooling issues it' might be wise to do the block flush in addition to the radiator replacment.

Getting scaly, rusty crud out of the block will help your cooling for sure.

(might also add to take a close look at the block freeze plugs - they can rust badly the worse ones were on the backside between the eng / tranny....)

I guess if you're going that far, you might as well replace the pump, too. I've heard the thermostat is a bear to replace, too. Maybe some can advise on that.....

These van's weak spot is definetly the engine cooling issue. Once they get a bit of miles on em, it's quite common for em to run hot.

I've gone so far to install an auxiliary engine oil cooler & switch out the stock mechanical fan to an electric cooling fan and it never fails to run very cool even on the hottest of days.

Let us know how you fare - I wish you a non-overheating camping trip...

God bless,

David B

Hey Dave,

I can't say I am a friend of Stev's,but I have conversed with him on another dodge forum about my van several times over the last few weeks. I used his write up on the IAC valve cleaning on my van,as well as a simple cooling system flush he told me about using 50-50% distilled water/distilled vinegar mix.I did that, and the coolant that came out looed pretty good, but the radiator just looks suspect to me,so I plan on replacing it(I wish I had done it when I drianed the cooling system the first time). I have no idea how badf a job the radiator is going to be,or the thermostat, but I will give it hell tomorrow. I have taken the van out once on Memorial day weekend while towing the camper, and it seemed to be running hot to me,but I am not really sure. The gauge was disecting the ZERO in the 210 mark on the gauge with the AC off,and a very hot humid day(90* degrees ambient). It pulled pretty good for a van with a small V8 in it,and I never go too fast while towing anyway.I am just concerned that it will overheat while on our way to Lake George with probably as hot if not hotter weather when we leave than on the first trip a few weeks ago. I wish it had more power, but I can live with it as it is now.I only drive the van a few times a week at the most, and usually it just sits for 5-6 days a week. Also we only tow the camper maybe 6 times a season,so it should suit my needs quite well. Thanks for the reply, and I am sure I will be around here a lot.

Chris

P.S. forget the 4BT in the Zuki.Put a 4 port 13B Mazda Rotary engine in it.It has been done plenty,and I think it's a sweet swap,but then again I am a certified rotorhead.

Great Chris thanks for the background. I like to think of all the guys here who participate & share with each other as 'friends'. I hope many, if not all of us would agree ! Welcome to the club.

Stev is, to me, even a bit more than that even. First of all he's a real credit to the Ram Van forum here, super knowledgeable and happy to help. Everything he shares is worth "taking to the bank".

Stev and I have yet to meet in person either, but I wouldnt rule that out. Turns out as we've become acquainted that we discovered we're both Christians who recognize our ministry to our family, and we both homeschool our children -he and his wife have seven children (!) and my wife and I have five. No wonder we need sizeable vans, eh ?

I guess our devotion to home & hearth kind of forces us to be frugal with our asssets - hence our need to keep these older rigs road worthy. But it's fun to have an older rig that runs like new and serves us well.

(Any person can sign up for new car payments - heck, going into debt big time on new cars & trucks is pure American normalcy.)

On your van, the temp doesn't sound high for towing. I hear guys say that under heavy loads their trucks & vans do that or a bit higher. My Cummins truck will, too.

On my Ram Van, I can only get it above 200 if I'm towing or idling for awhile with the AC on, on a hot day.

Sounds like your flush did well cleaning out the gunk.

But peace of mind is worth something, too. Knowing those crucial parts are AOK will serve you well.

I had my water pump & thermotat replaced when a shop was doing a R & R on the front cover for a bad oil leak. (They also discovered the plenum issue on the intake was leaking - common problem on the 318, and fixed the whole deal at once.)

Ergo, I can't say how hard it will be. I eliminated my stock fan & shroud, replacing them with a physically smaller E-Fan - which makes access a bit easier as the front of the engine is now quite visible.

Point is, a good part of your effort to R&R the radiator & pump will be pulling off the fan & shroud. I think the pump mainly just bolts to the front cover - nothing too tricky. (I would do a search on the forums for the procedure you're bound to find some threads with pics of the job.....)

Thanks for the tip on using a Mazda 13B rotary in the zuki -I was just kinda kidding, it works pretty good with the modded 1.3 it has now. I wouldn't mind reading about some rotary swaps into the zuki if you have any info.....fascinating thought anyhow. What do those engines cost anyway - hard to find ? Curious...

God bless,

David B.

I would say 'yes' to replacing the water pump while you have the radiator out. The radiator will have to come out through the bottom because of the A/C lines and such.

I just replaced the water pump, radiator, and thermostat in my '94 last year.

If you plan on towing now is a good time to upgrade your radiator to the biggest one available, if you don't have one already.

Chris, ditto what Nate said - it's only a few bucks more for the 'desert cooler' radiator with more cooling capacity.

I also wonder if those 'super cooling liquids' they offer for use in the radiator are helpful - I have no experience with em

I just bought Visteon Nascar radiator for the van.It looks like the factory one,and has two rows like the stock unit.Where would I find this "desert cooler" radiator? Does the radiator really have to come out through the bottom? How hard of a job is it to do the water pump? Is the thermostat a tough job as well?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

I'd call the parts counter back and tell them you wanted the "heavy duty", not the standard duty radiator. It will have another row of cooling tubes in it. Mine was stock - 2 rows, the "desert cooler/heavy duty" unit I replaced it with had 3.

Most parts stores can get both, but you have to ask, and it will be a few bucks more - but well worth it.

All vans are 'cooling challenged' due to the shape of the body / cowling profile.

The heat has a hard time escaping from underneath, compared to trucks & cars.

Dodge vans are probably even worse in that respect than Ford or Chevy, due to their unibody design.

There is no 'air gap' on top of the separate frame for heat to escape. Body on frame designs (Ford/Chev) trap less heat, basically.

On our vans, the frame rails of the unibody, plus the upside down cavity of the engine 'doghouse', together act like a closed heat shroud. Ever notice - on hot days especially, how hot your van feels when you shut it down ?

All that heat sitting just under the doghouse, eventually making it's way into the passenger compartment.

This is less of an issue at highway speeds, where airflow is good no matter what.

But sitting still, idling or towing at low speeds makes the Ram van tend to run hot.

(These reasons are partly why I installed an E-Fan. It continues to run after engine shutdown, not stopping until the engine has cooled significantly.

The lifespan of underhood componenets, hoses, belts, wiring, all plastic parts, should be significantly lengthened due to this, as well.)

On the Thermostat job, why don't you hit search in the top menu, and search any forums that cover our engine - this van forum or dodge truck forums (V-8, gas engines 318/360) and you're bound to find threads with pictures and step by step on the thermostate R & R.

Hi Chris!

It's great that you have found the more active Dodge Ram Van/Wagon forum on the internet. ;) The DF site has a few helpful people there too, but it mves slow a times. This Ram Van forum here is very active on a daily basis.

Like my dear frined Dave, I too am on a quest for improved fuel economy without totally dropping in a diesel engine. ;) However, the thought just keeps popping into my head, but nothing in the bank to tackle such a task.

If that radiator is clean now and the engine is flushed, the trip to Lake George should be fine.

Dave,

It's great to hear that you've gotten that van up to 19mpg. That is almost rivaling my Dodge Caravan for mixed city and highway. That gets 20.5mpg mixed. Your e-fan mod must be paying off very well.

I'll be looking at the rear axle fluid and changeing it shortly. It's on my must look at sheet as time prevails. For 1998 and newer, the rear is to use 75W90 that I'm aware of. I'm currently running a mix of 5W30 & 10W30 until next month when temps stay around the upper 80's and 90's. Then it's 10W30 season. The 5W30 has helped the fuel economy too.

Nate,

With Dave and youself talking about heat in the engine compartment, I followed your link over to that 71-77 Ram Van forum. That guy who added the side grills above the front wheel wells showing that glowing red light may be onto something. ;) I wonder if the heat can escape? As for the gen-2 body style, the front cowl isn't used for ram-air into the air-filter housing, but it can duct heat out of the engine compartment.

Weight is another issue for getting better fuel economy. When I get most of the children into booster seats, I can remove a bench seat from the van. :) Those things are heavy, even in a 12-passenger model. The Sprinter seats weigh like air. BUT, they are just so uncomfortable it's not even funny for the passengers in the back.

My current quest is tires in the other thread. The Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S G051 (Highway All-Season) may be the ticket for great rooling resistance in a M+S tire for the full size vans.

Peace!

Hey Guys!

Thank goodness I've found a place to hang out with fellow enthusiasts!

I'm on my second Dodge conversion van. The first was a '98 PMC (Prestige Motor Coach) which looked like this:

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid225/p0489597296357d1ee2e74dc6244ded71/e8382bef.jpg

...until WifeAce and our three children were hit head-on by a drunk driver. The impact tossed the doghouse cover all the way to the back of the van. Everybody wore seatbelts (the four year-old was in a car seat) and injuries were relatively minor considering the impact.

The woman who crossed the center line blew a .24 at 11:45 in the morning and was arrested on felony DUI charges and was later allowed to plead down to simple DUI by a misguided prosecutor.

The EMT who I met with at the trauma center said that the van had saved their lives, or to quote him, "If your family had been in any other smaller vehicle, you would have buried at least two of them."

Long story short, when WifeAce got out of the hospital and we began shopping for another vehicle...she wanted the same Dodge base for security. Hence, we ended up with an '01 Regency conversion that I have nicknamed "Sta-Pufft"...as in the marshmallow guy. There are very few van conversions on the road without a stripe kit and we all love how clean it looks:

Howdy all. I haven't been on this thread in a long time. Welcome IceAce, Zandra, and you too JJ!

IceAce..that is one nice conversion you got there. In addition to what Dan said, some silver Ghost Flames on the front of that van would really cool.

Zandra...I would definitey check (or have checked) the front end of that van. Swaying could be caused by worn tie rod ends, idler arms, drag/center link, loose wheel bearings, worn control arm bushings, or a steering box that needs adjusted. If those components are original to the van, then you can probably bet some of those items need replaced. Oh and also have the frame where the steering box mounts checked for cracks.
