View Full Version Of This Page : best exhaust for the RT Magnum?

Mine arrives in two months and I am already thinking of what exhaust to put on it. I have always used single or dual chamber Flowmaster exhaust systems on my vehicles as I like 'em loud.

What is the best cat-back exhaust size the RT should be increased to? I assume when I get new mufflers put on that I'll have larger pipes installed... cat-back.

So... whats a better match for the RT and what size pipe?

Look at MagnumFreak's setup. He's the RT exhaust master!

Actually it just depends on what you want from your car. If you want head turning what the heck was that sound go with what I did. If you want quiet just growls a bit under throttle go with the borla set up.

There are definite advantages to going with a pre-made system like the borla. What I was doing was experimenting, got lucky and got the sound I was looking for along with a big performance boost. I still have a bit of resonance but that will soon be taken care of with some better sound proofing. The resonance is coming from the rear area where the spare tire sits. Just a hollow uninsulated echo chamber that needs a bit of sound proofing.

Did you use dynamat or another product? I'm still having slight vibrations at 2200rpms when in 2nd gear. I have 18 inch magnaflows, no reasonators and 3.5 wide and 18 inch long stainless steel tips. I tried it first with 14 inch mufflers and the reasonation problem was too much. I now love the sound and can live with the slight vibration but if asound deadner will fix this I would love it.

My sound deadening material came in today. Unfortunately it will be at least 4 days before I can get to installing it. I have to work nights for the next 4 nights. I went with a company called Fat Mat. Fat Mat (http://www.fatmat.com) I love working with the smaller guys. I like to give them a chance. Good prices and got it to me in about a week from the initial order. I plan on removing all of the plastic in the rear along with the battery, battery tray and the spare tire. I will also remove all of the plastic covering the rear wheel wells. All of the exposed metal will be covered with Fat Mat. I will post a complete photo spread along with results after it is done. Of course, while I am at it, I will replace the rear speakers with better ones. The stock ones are pretty good, but a paper cone sucks.

I have noticed that the sound of the mufflers is getting nicer with time. They seem to be mellowing out a bit. I really love the way they sound now. Just enough to turn heads when you get down on it, but fairly quiet at highway speeeds.

I have an inside track with Flowmaster and a couple of others but I want mine to sound baaaaaaaadazzzzzz. Thanks for keeping us up on what you're doing. I'm waiting for the 6.1 in 2006 but it's killing me!!! Price on the exaust is not a problem. I just need someone to do it right for me the 1st time. I "used to" wrench my own cars. Can you give me more details? I'm sure there is another thread with that info. If so, please point me there.

Thanks!
KK

I'm impressed with your ambitious undertaking. Please share the sound deadning results as I'm afraid to try it and not get results. Several sites on the net claim dynamat did nothing for their exhaust resonation problem but did improve music quality. I'm still debating whether to add small glass packs or try dynamat. The idea of pulling out the coverings on my less than a 1000 miles baby scares me. One of the many faults of a guttless rookie car man.

I believe I have fixed the resonation issue in my exhaust set up. Check the lower panel on your hatchback- its poorly attached on most all models- I went to the dealership and checked six models-everyone was loose and vibrated going over bumps or exhaust waves. Dead skinned just this lower truck panel and absolutely no more vibrations over bumps or excellarating at any rpm. I ve given it a rigorous test over 30 miles of hard starts and can't make it buzz- I'm happy and thanks for all the forum input.

Never heard of it either...? Do you have a civilian translation?

Deadskin is asound dampener similar to dynomat-- it doesn't require heating and is much cheaper. Car toys wanted 350 to do my entire truck area. Another sound shop went for a ride with me and sat inback. We both thought the one panel was our main problem. took off lower panel of hatch door and covered it with this outfits version of dynamat. It wasn't so much the product but the location. I now have zero resonation as well as no rattle going over bumps. 18 incg magnaflow ovals, 3.5 stainless steel tips , no factory resonators.

I used fat mat in the back of the magnum. Good stuff and a heck of a lot cheaper than dynamat. Ordered it and got it within a week. Fat Mat (http://www.fatmat.com) is the web site and it cost me about 45 bucks to do the back of the car. Not using the stuff before I ordered a whole lot more than I needed. Oh well, I will figure out some place to use it.

Just like Lonemagnum said, Dead Skin is a similar product to what Dynamat is. It's a spray-on damping liquid instead of a sheet. The company that makes it is Lightning Audio. Here is the link: http://www.lightningaudio.com/2004/products/index.asp?catID=95

Cardomain sells it for a good price: http://www.cardomain.com/item/LITDSAE

The dampener we used was purchased at Quality auto Sound. This is a generic dynomat or Fat Mac--certainly nothing special. It is a foil like paper that adheres to the hatch real well. I'm sure any one of several products would do as goo or better. The key was Car Toys wanted 350 to do the truck while we fixed the rattle and resonance for 50 by just covering the lower panel. I may get some more and do entire trunk but for now see no need. Sorry for all the confusion-the product is not superior.

Thanks for the link. I sold a company in 1997 that sold a similar product. I'm arching all of this info hoping to buy a 2006 Magnum with the 6.1. Anyone have any updates on the 6.1 for 2006?

MagnumFreak,

Seems you are the resident expert in the exhausts systems, LOL I have just put another exhaust system on my RT I went with the maxiflows. I was wondering what size pipes you guys have used. My muffler installer recommened highly against going to bigger exhausts. I somehow feel I have done the wrong thing by staying factory 2.25. What did you guys do?

yup, mine is straight piped. sounds mean. at first i just put the new magnaflows on, but it really didnt make much of a difference, so he cut out the huge resonator and put in bigger pipes straight back from the cats. it is kinda loud inside the car at low speeds, but noone rides with me and i like it loud! :D
