here is the Press Release:

"True to company tradition, Chrysler is taking yet another concept vehicle to reality. Today Chrysler revealed the production version of its all-new segment-busting 2004 Chrysler Pacifica at the New York International Auto Show. Chrysler Pacifica, which represents a new vehicle segment called "sports tourer," will go on sale in the spring of 2003 as a 2004 model.
"As promised, the production version of the Chrysler Pacifica remains true to the concept that we revealed earlier this year, a concept that generated tremendous consumer interest," said Dieter Zetsche, President and CEO of the Chrysler Group. "There is no other vehicle like Pacifica in the marketplace. With its low step-in height, first class seating, three rows of seats, and car-like handling, there's no question that the Chrysler Pacifica will redefine the large vehicle market segment much in the same way that Chrysler PT Cruiser revolutionized the small vehicle market."

"This is a drop-dead gorgeous six-passenger vehicle that people are going to fall in love with," said Jim Schroer, Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing. "Cleverly packaged with step-across entry and exit, first class seating, an in-instrument cluster navigation system, hands-free communication and a power liftgate, Chrysler Pacifica sets a new standard and offers a fresh alternative in the luxury vehicle market."

2004 Chrysler Pacifica Production

Production of the 2004 Chrysler Pacifica will begin in early 2003 at Chrysler Group's Windsor Assembly Plant. While Pacifica will be built in the same plant as Chrysler and Dodge minivans, the vehicle will not be built on any one of the company's short or long wheelbase minivan platforms. Pacifica will be built on its own new, unique platform, but will use existing corporate components including the same proven 3.5-liter V-6 engine that powers the award-winning Chrysler 300M.

Chrysler Brand

With the introduction of the 2004 Chrysler Crossfire in Los Angeles earlier this year and now the reveal of the 2004 Chrysler Pacifica, the Chrysler brand continues to gain momentum. Chrysler brand sales have increased 306 percent since 1991 (from 130,542 to 530,454 in 2001), more than any other American automotive brand.

In addition, Chrysler has tripled its market share (from 1.0 percent to 3.0 percent) in the same time period and has moved to seventh place from 17th place in first-choice preference over the past four years - - by far the most dramatic improvement of any other automotive brand.

"No other automotive brand has more of a fresh, diverse product portfolio than the Chrysler brand," said Tom Marinelli, Vice President, Chrysler/Jeep® Global Brand Center. "With Pacifica, Crossfire and the phenomenal PT Cruiser, Chrysler showrooms will have some of the most appealing products under one roof, each of which underscores the brand's philosophy of stunning design, unparalleled innovation and unbeatable value."

Is the market ready for the come back of the Station Wagon ? Seems like Mopar was the company that broke the mold - got families out of a station wagon and put them in to Mini Vans -

What do you think ? Is this a good move ?

If you have a growing family, would you prefer a station wagon over a mini van ?

Is DC going to be cutting in to the Mini Van profits by offering a smaller version to compete against it or do you see this as a way to fill a void and will boost overall sales ?

Here's a pic:
