Thought my stock hemi magnum exhaust system was a bit quiet and unappealing. Magnaflow will be releasing a kit shortly, but I couldn't wait. I brought the car to a local specialist who suggested keeping the stock resonator in place to allieviate unwanted cabin noise but removing the dual mufflers. Running straight pipes from the resonator to a magnaflow chrome tip made a significant difference in the hemi's sound. It is very reminescent to the magnaflow soundclip. (maybe a little quieter) I found this simple modification to make a nice difference in the cars sound without being obnoxiously loud. Hope this may help others considering such a project.

Thanks for the info. I am still tossing around about a dozen different choices in exhaust changes. I have got to make a few more phone calls on Tues when everything opens back up. I will keep people posted on what my choice ends up being along with the results. I am looking for performance and fuel economy gains. I will post video/sound clips of before and after so people can see/hear for themselves.
Also working on some really cool side marker lights for the Magnum. Like nothing you have ever seen before. :dropjaw:

Hey Magnum Freak... long time no write (check the other board),
Anyhow, FWIW, I've removed the muffler (the suitcase) and left the stock resonators on the back. It sounds good, but I don't think that I'm through experimenting. The change was fast and cheap and well worth the experimenting time. The shop I used charged me $85 to remove the suitcase and replace it with pipe. I drove about 200 miles today and noticed a slight drone at @75mph. Since that's a speed I'll be at most of the time, I didn't like it. I think that I'll see what happens if I have the suicase put back on and remove the rear resonators. My other thought is to simply put a pair of flowmasters in place of the "suitcase." Thoughts? Comments? Sarcastic remarks? Thanks

That is what is so cool about these cars. They can be modified to each individuals tastes and needs.
I am about 90 percent sure of what I am going to do with my exhaust now. I have set aside some money just for this mod. I plan on talking with their tech specialist Tuesday which will either finalize the decision or make me look elsewhere. Who is it????? Shhhhhhh! Top secret for now!!

Not much for the v6's yet. Most of what is out is for the RT's. hang in there SEMA is coming up and there should be a bunch of stuff coming out soon after.

Hey MagnumDave,
You ever get around to putting the suitcases back with no resonnators ??? I'm very curious for the sounds....
I would like to enhance the sound a bit, but not too radically, as I like my quiet while cruising as well. There are already too many options... and there ain't that many... LOL

Well, I've just completed part II of my exhaust experiments. I wanted a different sound than just removing the suitcase muffler and leaving the resonators had. Although I really liked the sound around town, I drive too many highway miles to listen to the drone that was created.
After looking at sizes of lots of different mufflers with my parts guy, we decided on using 2 dynomax mufflers and removing the factory resonators at the rear of the car. It seemed that based on the measurements of the suitcase my choices of mufflers were limited. Once I got to the muffler shop with my new Dynomaxs we found that there was room where the suitcase was for both of the new mufflers and decided to use them in place of the old suitcase and leave the resonaors alone.
Boy is it quieter. I still have a much deeper and much more full sound than I had with the suitcase. Adding the dynomaxes seems to have given the car a more "finished" sound. I don't know how to describe it yet; it sounds like the car should've sounded from the factory. A little more volume than stock, a richer bass tone, less weight, lower restriction.... it's all good!
If after a few weeks I don't like this mod, I'll change it again. So far, though it seems like a good compromise.
My Cold Air Induction just arrived today from 360 Intakez :rck: .... I'm gonna go put it on now....
Dave
BTW: $79.99 for each muffler, $80 labor.

so MD, it sounds like you replaced the suitcase mufflers with dynomax's, and put the stock resonnators back on.. Is that right ????

Hey Blanch,
I started playing with the exhaust by removing just the suitcase and leaving the resonators in place. My muffler guy told me that he didn't care what Chrysler called the things at the back of the car they are mufflers, not resonators. Anyway, I left them on the car and took out the suitcase. It sounded really good at idle, and around town was GREAT! My challenge was the number of highway miles that I drive (between 1000-2000 per week). I couldn't take the "drone" that I was left with using just the rear mufflers. My parts guy measured the suitcase and we looked for a set of low restriction mufflers that we could replace the factory one with. We found that Dynomax has two mufflers that would fit (ultraflow welded, have the lowest restriction) in the space we had available. My original thought in replacing was to remove the factory resonators at the rear of the car and replace them with the dynomaxes but I thougt that might be too loud. The muffler guy told me he could fit the new units where the suitcase had been so I thought we'd give it a try. What I wound up with was two DynoMax Ultraflow Welded Mufflers (part 17226) replacing the factory suitcase muffler and left the factory resonators in place with the factory exhaust tips, etc. I just put on a new cold air induction from 360 Intakez and I really like the sound so far. I ahven't taken it on a long trip yet and I haven't removed the "air silencer" from the intake yet so I can't say that I'm finished; but so far I think that I've got the sound that I want. I'll try and post pictures of the mods, but right now I can't figure out how to get sound files (without spending more money than I want too). Hope that answers your questions!

Alright MD, that explaination was great. That was just what I was looking for. That is exactly what I was thinking of doing to my RT, only difference was I was thinking of using FlowMasters instead of DynoMax's.
I am after some good sounds, but not obnoxious, and definitely not at cruise. It is important that the system be relatively quiet at cruise !!!
I do have a V8 explorer that has the Borla cat-back system on it, and it sounds just about perfect. The only problem is that Borla wants a little too much for their Magnum RT package. Too bad, because I'd definitely go with them again. But because the Borla package is so new, my standard PepBoys discount does not seem to apply yet.
So, I was just thinking that maybe I'd replace the suitcase mufflers to acheive the sound I'm after. The only problem with Flowmasters is that they offer so many different models for different sounds, and it would be hard to figure out which particular model will offer what I'm after. But, this solution would be VERY MUCH cheaper than the Borla system.
Maybe I'll consider the DynoMax's now too... Any drone at all ???
