Some ass backed into my van and drove away!!! Hit and Run!! I was shopping at the local Ikea and some dude hit my car and drove away! He crushed the entire rear panel, smashed my bumper, and completely crushed my new euro taillights!!! WTF!! Luckily, I found the dude on the otherside of the Ikea loading shit into the truck. I was soooo pissed off. The police wrote up a report and i'm calling my insurance company tomorrow morning. Has anybody been in a similar situation before? How should i handle this? Thanks

Follow the dumb idiot into a dark alley, make sure you have a crowbar with you, and pummel the moron for it.
Then take crowbar and bash the crap out of his truck. :D ;)
From the sounds of it, you have handled it well. You tracked down the individual, called the police, determined that he was wrong, and now insurance is handling it. Since it was hit and run, I am sure his insurance will be handling your repairs.

Damn that sux! I agree with McClane (both parts...:D)
Its time to let the insurance handle it though....if you feel they are not giving enough....fight 'em for it! You should be in the drivers seat, not them....Get estimates from the BEST shops you know of!

I am unsure as to the laws in your state, but in the province of Alberta, you only need to get one estimate, from any auto body repair shop of your choice.
The other guy's insurance will recommend what auto body shop to go to, but ultimately the final choice is up to you. In Alberta, you do not have to go to the auto body shop the insurance company suggests.
Unfortunately, being in two accidents (one quite recent), I am somewhat familiar with the procedure. Both times I was not at fault, so the other person's insurance paid for damages.

I talked to my insurance today. I apparently have two options and they seem kindof biased. 1) I can get my own insurance to pay for it (resulting in my rates going up sooner or later 2) get his insurnace to pay for it. LOL.. yeah, that's what i replied to my insurnace company ater they told me my choices. I'm getting any estimate tomorrow. I'm just afraid the shop is going to mess around with my newly installed sound system. Who knows what they will do to it.
PS, i posted pics of my sound system and the damages.... check it out.

Ouch !! I don't blame you one bit for being p*ssed.
I'll relay a personal experience in hopes that it might shed some light on your predicament.
Last year, some goofball made a lane change without looking and sideswiped my dad's Voyager that I was driving. He was from another province. Worse, he was a carny, so he was rarely home.
Well, we exchanged insurance information, got the police reports, and then waited for the other person's insurance company to contact us.
About two weeks passed and nothing. We contacted our own insurance company and they said "go ahead and fix it. We'll cover the damages." We had to pay the deductible first. Our insurance company also said that based on the police report, it was determined the other party was at fault.
They also said that once they made contact with the other party and insurance company, the other insurance company would reimburse our insurance company, and then we would get our deductible back.
It wasn't until 4 months later that this materialized. The hold up was the other party, he was a carny so it took him that long to contact his insurance company about the accident.

Wow McClain, that sounds just like what happened to me this last month! On the third of August, 4:20 in the afternoon on a saturday; I was in the middle lane of our local freeway and I was ran into the far left hand lane, and then into a retaining wall on the freeway by an idiot who A) was from another city, and was driving a rental car and B) almost sideswiped one other car, went back into the on ramp and then came over with out looking in his blind spot AGAIN after he almost hit the other car and came one full lane into me. I slowed when I saw he was merging into the far right hand lane so when he came over towards me, so I was slowing to about 50 mph, and then he just kept on comming! he was driving a little 4 door sedan, and I was in a 2 door Mazda Navjo (2 door delux version of the ford explorer) with my 2 kids. I swerved to miss him and honked, and he STILL kept comming! By then I was in the far left hand lane, and he was straddling the dotted lines between the far left hand lane and the middle lane and I went into the retaining wall between north bound and south bound freeways. Not until I had stopped after the impact did he realize what he did, and so he fled the scene (which in NV is a fellony) and tried to hide behind a fast food place. A witness (a nurse on her way home from work) checked me and the kids out on the spot, just a couple of bruises from seatbelts only. and 2 other witnesses ran the guy down and got the plate info, a discription of the guy and came back to do the police report. They even said they would pick him out of a photo lineup because of the profanity he used on them.
The part that bites is that the month before I had PAID OFF this rig! The lein company that held the title, sent it to me via Regular post, not even signature mail. It has since been lost by the US Postal Service. I have had to PAY out of pocket my deductable, even though the police has stated it was clearly not my fault, and infact it was a miracle that I didn't hit anyone else! Out of desperation, I Need transperation (special needs child) so we ask the lein company to over night us the proof of purchase so the NV DMV can do a title search. I have yet to receive that, and I PAID for that, my self on Tuseday of last week. The INS company is only offering me 3 grand for my Navie (what can I say, I name my rigs LOL) after the deductable is taken out. So all in all I am getting shafted all the way around. if they can get the deductable out of the other agency, then I MIGHT (their words) be able to get my deductable back.
What can you do, ya know? your hands are tied so you are forced to take a portion of the value your vehicle was worth, and then you get screwed on something that you had no fault in, that has been proven to be not your falut, and the INS company STILL doesn't have the police report yet, because the ENTIRE OFFICE was on vacation for a two.. what did they do?? take a cruise?? Geeze I am really starting to detest Allstate! They alotted me one hundered dollars for a MONTH worth of Rental on a car, and get up set that our family doesn't have enough money to rent a car for that long because of the surgery my son requires...
Thanks for letting me vent!

I know it is easier said than done, but accidents suck, cause nothing but stress and anxiety, and eventually the victim winds up paying first and not knowing if the other party will live up to their responsibilities or not.
