A few months back my wifes stereo/CD threw a gear (literally) and will not play CD's. Is there a place on the NET that sells used OEM stereos kinda like an online junkyard? She refuses to put an aftermarket stereo in (Don't ask), but says if I can find a stereo from a junkyard from a wrecked van, I can buy it if it's not too expensive. If I can't find it online then I'm gonna start calling the junkyards in my area.

We have a third child on the way and we are really strapped for cash.

Try e-bay. I bought mine there for $85.00. Upgraded to CD from Radio/cassette. Then I turned around & sold my Radio?cassette on e-bay for $29.00.

I have to agree with Idleswede that Ebay is the way to go. And if you're not in a hurry, you can wait for a better deal than he got too. I got the premium AM/FM/CD/cassette for $50.

I have to strongly disagree with your wife, though, about wanting to stick with factory. I have owned three Chrysler vehicles with the stereo you are replacing, and they simply don't last. Even going the junkyard/Ebay route, you won't know what you're getting. Whatever you get, it's been my experience that they start having problems of one sort or another at about 3-4 years old.

My suggestion, go to your nearest public library that stocks back issues of Consumer Reports or Stereo Review, and pick out the best unit they recommend in the price range you're shopping. My local Wal-Mart stocked a mounting plate that was a perfect fit, AND a wiring harness adapter that came with pretty good instructions/wiring diagrams that allowed me to use the factory plugs. I installed a Kenwood AM/FM/CD player in my 1996 Town & Country in about an hour. And the stereo shop I bought it from gave me two free speakers that went in another car I own.

Just my opinion.

In support of your wife’s position, though, if immediate cash concerns are most important, getting a factory piece off Ebay will be the cheapest (though probably not in the long run, since you’ll be replacing it again soon enough). And for ease of installation, the swap will take you 15 minutes at the most.

Thanks guys, I have been looking on ebay some for the stereo. You're right, that seems to be the cheapest route.

Rick,
I tend to agree with you, but she wouldn't. However, we plan on selling the van in a couple of years so I may stick with OEM.
