At what speed does the speed limiter let the 2004 1500 Hemi get too before it engages. I have ran mine up to 100 mph but I am wondering how much faster I can go until it shuts off.

Rumor has it topping out at 130.

I've had my RT up to 128/129 - and the speedo just hangs there.
(1271 miles on engine)

130 sounds like a solid number. I gave up top end runs a few years ago, they are just too risky. 130 is fast enough, especially in a "station" wagon!!!!

Exactly 128 is the limitation. Your speedo might show a slight difference depending on what rims you're using.

I took a trip to St. Louis last week and pushed the car to it's limit. The prev. person who said the top out speed was 128 was correct. It dose not cut out like a typ. gov.. It just stops accl. when there is about 3000 RPM left to push. Needless to say I was peeved :VHOT: . Wnt to my dealer to find out if a change to the comp. would void my wnty (I dont know if this is tru) but he said he did not think so.

Any truth to the rumor that Canadian RT's do not have the limiter?

MagnumFreak

The limit that DC put on these incredible cars is because of the poor choice in tires. They are H rated is the reason we are limited to 128. I tested mine out once in autostick mode it hit the speed limiter in 4th gear! Dealer said that if I changed the tires they would change limiter. It is a safety thing. It would be a rude awakening to have a tire shred at top speed.

So if you changed tires they'd remove the limiter or move it up to a higher speed?

Beginning in 1991, the speed symbol denoting a fixed maximum speed capability of new tires must be shown only in the speed rating portion of the tire's service description, such as 225/50R16 89S. The most common tire speed rating symbols, maximum speeds and typical applications are shown below:

N 87 mph 140 km/h Temporary Spare Tires
P 93 mph 150 km/h
Q 99 mph 160 km/h Studless & Studdable Winter Tires
R 106 mph 170 km/h H.D. Light Truck Tires
S 112 mph 180 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
T 118 mph 190 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
U 124 mph 200 km/h
H 130 mph 210 km/h Sport Sedans & Coupes
V 149 mph 240 km/h Sport Sedans, Coupes & Sports Cars

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.

W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

What's involved in defeating the limiter? I'm assuming it's a software issue.

MagnumFreak

The only current way to defeat it is to get the dealer to change the speed limiter via software. I know that the truck owners are saying that they can defeat the speed limiter by turning the ignition key while driving. Not sure I want to try that at 128 mph.

Turn the ignition at 126mph?????  ;) :rck: LOL, man I sure as heck don't wanna try that at 126mph, what if it shuts down the engine for some unexpected reason? You'd spin out so badly...lol

I've hit the 128 barrier.

There are old Magnum drivers and there are bold Magnum drivers.
The jury is still out on old bold Magnum drivers.:)

Don't have a Hemi, haven't had my SXT to top speed yet, but I HAVE had it up to 115 and still pulling strong. I believe the limiter is set the same for all versions though. FYI, I have heard rumor that the top speed of the RT, stock, no limiter, is 145MPH (DC regional rep and a contact at the Brampton plant are sources). Not bad for a wagon, huh??

just found this out- i shut down at 108, but if i turn the key forward, i get the power back, and it starts accelerating again, but with no spedo, I dunno how fast I'm goin'!
