How do I get the floor mounted shifter out of my A-883 manual trans? My book shows to install a .010 shim on drivers side of handle and pull out?
I started taking out the bold that runs thru the shaft but that doesn't look like it's going to come out either?

Thanks

You can probably take the rods loose at the tranny, unbolt the shifter bracket from the trans, and let the whole shifter assembly hang there while you pull the trans.

I could but I know there is a trick to release that handle from the trans.

You do like the book mentioned, put the feeler gauge down between the shifter arm and the shifter assembly on the left side and it should pull right out. Might take a little PB Blaster to it first.

Okay, gonna try again that way right now.

It's gonna take me longer to get shifter out than the hole clutch job. Not to mention it's close to 94 degrees out and humid.

Still can't get it out. Does the shim slide down along the handle or on the other side of what looks to be shim of sorts (more towards drivers door)? I don't really understand what I need to accomplish before I can pull up on shifter handle.

I sprayed BBlast but only get my .010 shim down about a 1/4 " before it won't
go no further.

It goes between the shim looking piece and the shifter. That shim has a little tab sticking out which has a corresponding recess in the shifter. The shim your sliding in goes between them and lets the shifter slide up past the tab. Might take a good push to get it down in there and a good tug to get it out.

Okay will try again. We are going nuts and very hot. My buddy and I have been trying to get this thing out for 4 hours straight!

Is there one tab or two to clear? How far in approx. do you have to slide the shim down? Also slide the shim down the center or off to the side? Do you pull up or down on shift when pushing shim? Does the shim come out with the handle once we get it out?

FYI - We seem to get a lot of resistance when sliding shim down along the shift after 1/4 inch which is where the first dimple is in the housing. We are along the shifter handle side with shim towards the drivers door. Even with vise grips on shim we can't push it any farther.

There is only one tab. I think you have to go about 3/4 to 1", in the center. You might push down on the shifter it may free up the tab if it's sticking on the shifter. Your on the right side. Might try something bigger, I was using feeler gauges and just stuck the biggest one I could get in there.

Is unbolting the complete shifter assembly out of the question? a nut per shifter fork and three I think on the tail shaft.

Das Uber easy.

Well I appreciate everyones input. We gave up for now fustrated and switched to some cold ones. Not sure what's going on but we can't get the shifter out after trying everything mentioned. Perhaps it's rusted in, I think a picture of what th eshift end and shim look like would explain alot.

Yeah your right. I was trying not to disturb to many things and then in became personnel to get that shifter out. Never expected to waste so much time on something that should be so easy. Going to swing by a trans shop for some advice and understanding to some of my questions from my earlier posts. If that doesn't get me anywhere I'll unbolt the whole deal.

Heh yeah, the fuel line to the fuel rail on my '93 did that to me. I spent like an hour and a half trying to get it to disconnect at the rail. Never could get it, so I went under the truck and tried it at the lower end, popped right off :) Turns out the rail end is messed up somehow, I couldn't get it disconnected even off the truck.

Did you soak the shifter assembly down real good w/ PB Blaster? You might try tapping on the shifter lever w/ a hammer to break it free, push down on the lever while you are inserting the shim.

Yeah we did all those things. A whole can of blaster , hit with hammer, pushed down while inserting shim didn't work. Spoke with the guy at the transmission shop and he said I'm doing nothing wrong. He thinks it's just rust in there and suggested popping off the linkage as you said worst case.

Well took it out last Sat by removing shifter from trans. Guess I should have listened earlier and be done with her by now.....Never could get shifter arm off, don't know why. Need to reassemble now.
