I drive a Durango with a HEMI and just recently got a Challenger RT. On the D, you could get some better breathing and power by removing the resonator. Looking at the Challenger it looks like it has a similar setup. Close to the middle there's what's being referred to as the suitcase, then there are mufflers in the back. I assume the suitcase is actually a resonator? Or is it the other way around?

My thought was to pull the suit case or the mufflers in the back and replace with a straight pipe. Exhaust on the cheap. Just wondering if anyone has done it yet? Or if anyone can explain how this setup works.

I'll roll under mine and take a look when I get home. I would not remove the resonators though.
I installed a Magnaflow cat back on the wife's Hemi D and it added drone to the cabin.
IMHO, the drone in the cab of the Challenger is enough already.

my brother removed his resinators on his 08 and i think is sounds fine... Its not loud until you put it in the kitchen - Although i am debating on what im going to do with mine... i think ill end up taking out the resinators and if i dont like it im only out a length of pipe

We have a sponsor that has some interesting sound clips for the Challenger. Check them out.

You can get a Blastin Bob's suitcase muffler eliminator kit off Ebay for a little over $100.00 these pipes work with the OEM exhaust tips. I bought a Pypes system with race pro mufflers and old school style exhaust tips for mine for like $499.00.

there is no suitcase on mine, just two big ass cats right after the manifolds, then 2 mufflers right past the rear seat, then the resonators.

Looks like an easy & cheap upgrade would be just swapping the factory mufflers for aftermarket. The OEM pipes look plenty beefy, no eq tube though.

edit: my mistake, you are referring to the huge muffler on the D as the suitcase. I remember when I replaced the stock exhaust it was massive, flowed pretty good for a quiet muffler though.

The resinators you are referring to are the suit case mufflers.

I'll have to put mine up on ramps to get a better look but I didn't see anything in the middle. just the cat right after the manifolds, and the small box type mufflers in the back.
I would venture to say that eliminating the mufflers might make it too loud inside if they also act as a resonator.
Truth be told I am thinking about adding a resonator the the Magnaflow kit on the D to reduce some of the cabin drone that occurs between 2100-2600 rpms.

I am going this route :D One of the below setups on each side just before the mufflers. Have some black pipe that takes it out even with the body line.
Less than $300 and selectable.

The suitcase mufflers are all the way in the back, The exhaust tips hook on them. I have the pypes system with "O" drone. My mufflers are located under the rear seat.

I found a video on u tube that showed a replacement system and I saw the ones that are integrated with the tips.
So the square boxes under the rear seat (on the stock setup) are the resonators?
And the pipes system eliminates them and you still have zero drone?
I still think I'm going to get the cut outs, quiet when I dont want to wake the neighbors.

how much improvement in sound can I expect if I remove the 'suitcase' mufflers and replace them with pipe & install some tips?
Worth the trouble or will the resonators (the ones under the rear seat) still keep it quiet?
thanks

sounds nice. I will be at the shop in the morming removing the rear-most mufflers. I will keep the resonators for now.
Not sure what the blurb in the vid clip meant about smaller resonators though.
The kit is called resonator eliminator. I though the rear most assemblies were the mufflers and the middle (under the rear seat) assemblies were the resonators?

6speed cars have smaller resonators than automatics so 6 speed cars will be louder by removing the rear mufflers.

I would have thought just the opposite due to the size of the trans.:dunno:

I am considering replacing the under seat assemblies with some cherry bomb straight through glass packs and keeping the resonators. I am thinking the glass packs will flow really well, and the resonators should mellow out the harsh tone.
I'll see what the shop has in the way of 2.5" mufflers and go from there.
Pics & clip later.

that would make sense except for the resonators are no where near the tranny, so the size shouldn't be effected.

The automatics dont have the trac pak.

In a word: wow. A lot throatier than before, 50 pounds lighter, and less than 1 bill total. Glad I decided to go this route rather than pay $400 for the eliminator kit and some cutouts.
Here are a few pics. sorry about the quality they were from my phone.
Will get out the miniDV this afternoon if it stops raining and post up some video clips.

edit: the last pic is of the shop owner & senior welder checking to make sure everything is as close to perfect as possible. The first 2010 Challenger they have done, so they took some pics for advertising. hey, i got a free sticker for the toolbox out of the deal :D

I think the only way to get the locker rear with an auto tranny is the SRT-8.
