As always when I change my oil I open up the filter.

I figure at the very least the magnets keep the filter media from getting clogged as quickly. At best they keep the sub x? micron metallic elements from circulating through the engine.

In the photo, there was about 4000 miles on the oil and filter and about 18 months between changes with Mobil 1 10w30 synthetic.
In that time I only added less than an additional quart. The filter is a Purolator 300001, and the best way I currently have of opening it is with a hammer and chisel

The engine seems very healthy, runs smooth and gets as good economy as can be expected, and passes emissions testing with flying colors.

I imagine every engine would have this much build up on the interior of the filter where the magnets are placed.

What do you all think?

I'm kind of thinking some more magnets might be called for.

Makes me want to get one of those big honkin', 50lb. pull magnets and affix it to my oil pan. Or at least get a magnetic drain plug. It's a wonder that Purolator or Fram hasn't offered a 'magnetic filter'...as a competitive edge. It's definitely beneficial to remove that stuff floating around in there.

Go get a filtermag. They are worth every penny. I run them on all my cars except my 08 Cobalt - it can't have one based on how GM is using those none-standard filters.

Wow, they offer one with 450lbs. of pull! That's some serious particle scavenging power. Is it a problem getting them off the filter?

Well the one I have on my dodge takes a bit to take off, the fun part is I use it to help me take the filter off. It's that strong.

It's worth every penny.

One of the things that has been pointed out to me is that the magnets I have, as strong as they are, might not be strong enough to pull the ferrous particles from the oil while it is in circulation. It might only be pulling fragments from the oil inside the filter and from the filter media with the engine off. Still they cant hurt.

Obviously the stronger the magnet the better. And if the magnet itself is in direct contact with the oil the better.

Then there are the non ferrous materials aluminum, copper, brass, others which might bypass the filter media and not even notice the magnets

So if were swatting flies on flypaper with 20 # sledge hammers, let's line the inside of our oil pans with these magnets. 312 lbs of pull force.

I'm gonna try some magnets I have from an old hard drive that have a pretty good pull and are cheap.
