I'm in the process of installing a mechanical temp gauge on my 79 Pw. I can't seem to be able to remove the square female pipe plugs on the intake manifold so i can install the sending unit. If anybody has any tips it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You have the proper socket for them? If they are rusty you can try soaking them w/ penetrating fluid. Or heat the manifold up w/ a torch :)

ran into the same problem myself with trying to get those plugs out. The simplest way is to go to the local hardware store and get a 5/16" piece of square stock and turn it with a wrench or two.

I was in your shoes last fall. Read this thread to get the full saga and the solution:

Basically it's a matter of trying progressively more severe (but smart) methods until you get it. Step one would be daily penetrating oil soaks followed by the proper size square drive. See the thread for details, photos, etc.

You'll get it eventually.

What brand of gauge did you get, by the way?

It's great to have an accurate read on the temp.
