wow you know what just clicked?...ive been useing a 12 volt coil the whole time...the ballast is still hooked up...so could it be my coil isnt getting the full 12 volts because its going through that ballast thus not sparking?...

I've used (And still use after the HEI upgrade) an Accel 'Super Stock' coil, with the Mopar ignition system, and it'll work fine.... So I doubt that's the prob.
(No, you're not dumb ... Unless your name is 'joey' ... :D :D :D )

Is your ballest res. good ?? they do go bad.

yes but it that only way to bypass it?...thats not really bypassing just kinda using a diff system..

Can you check the voltage on your ballest res. on the coil side. What is the problem ?no fire to your coil? You have fire to your ballest res and not your coil?

power is getting to the coil but not firing...

You only need 12 volts while you are cranking the engine, it should drop to ~7 volts once the key is returned to run. If you feed a normal coil a full 12V all the time, the coil will overheat and fail (with standard Dodge wiring).

Well, you could start cutting/soldering wires if you want... But I did mine like that, so the factory ign can still be used. In fact all my factory ign stuff is still there.. It would take me only a couple minutes to plug everything back in 'factory'. So, like NASCAR guys, I have an actual 'backup' ignition system :D

exactly...but 12 volts arent getting to the coil while cranking because the ballast is dropping it right?

I think what he's asking, guys, is if running a ballast resistor in front of a 12v coil will keep said 12v coil from firing (since the ballast drops voltage to what, 8v?).

It shouldn't. I ran an Accel 'Super Stock' coil (12v) on my factory Mopar ign for about a year, before I switched over to HEI.

With the ballast resistor still wired in line to it?

yeah thats what im wondering because the coil needs 12volts to fire right?
if it goes through the ballast it drops to 8...is there a diif coil for 8volt systems?

Well earlier coils were designed to run at lower voltage, I think it's around 8 or 9 volts but I'm not sure. It will say "For use with external resistor" on the coil if it is for the older systems.
To answer your question a bit more clearly, yes you can still buy the older-style low voltage coil :)

Not sure, never tried it :) Could be though. Bypass the ballast and see if it works.

I just un hooked the wires, and put the two that plug in together and twisted them together and taped them, then did the same with the othere two. And it works fine.

I have run MSD,Mallory, and Accell coils in a number of my vehicles (MOPAR) that had a ballast in the system with no problem. Your not gonna take full adnantage of the coil but it will work.

Yup. Worked just fine. A 12v coil will still work from 9v, you just don't get the full 'potential' out of it.
