I just out on some new tires but havent balanced them yet, and now sometimes when I hit some minor bumps in the road my front wheels will shake badly when going fast and until I slow down or speed up, and sometimes when slowing down from going fast. and then other times it seems fine. Is this because of the tires not being balanced right or something elsE? I checked the ball joints they seem fine, but I dont know what else to check for.

If the tires are the only thing you changed, then yes they are the culprit. Balancing may help, I would definitely go have that done before changing the tires again or something. What brand tire?

Check the idler arm and the tie rod ends.

i would have to go with the idler arm or steering linkage of some sort also. i've ran many a tire without balancing and would just have a vibration at certain speeds. very predictable. jack the front end up and check everything very carefully and grab the wheel top and bottom to check your wheel bearings while your at it. just pretty much grab anything and see if you got slop somewhere.

Alright thanks everyone, I am getting the tires balanced and I checked everything and everything is tight and the wheels dont move in any way except rolling.

ok it seems like now since I got the tires balanced its still there, I jacked it up yesterday and it seems the both front wheels are shakey from side to side if I kick the top or bottom. is this wheel bearings?

You might want to check the steering box coupler at the bottom of the steering colum, where it hooks to the steering box.....

What do I need to check for exactly? lol I am a complete goon when it comes to suspension and steering

The rag joint, it's a piece of rubber that the steering shaft bolts to before the steering box.

hey Speeeeeedo, I love the paint job on your truck, is that a 3 or 4 color paint job ??? :)

Did the 75 have a rag joint instead of the coupler ???

Speed Dragon

More like a 9 color job :D

Yeah the coupler didn't come out until late 70's/early 80's sometime.

Ahhhhhhhh Ha, it does have a coupler, thanks for letting us know Casey. Does it have a short shaft coming out of that coupler with a rag joint at the other end just before going through the firewall? Have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth a little and see if if there is any movement there in the coupler or at the rag joint. Is there any excessive movement in the steering box?..... Also, you might take it to where you bought and had the new tires mounted, and have them see if the new tires might have a problem. Wouldn't be the first time that new ties were bad that's for sure....

just the $.02 of an "OLD" knownuttin

WEll I did what yall told me and the coupler isnt loose. My steering box is so loose the steering wheel can turn almost half way around and the wheels stay straight, other than that everything else is nice and tight. I am gonna look around for a good box. I have 2 others D100's

Sounds like a good idea to me. I have no idea in the world how much "slop" is tolerable, maybe Speeeeeeedo or Bruce knows.

For wheel bearing just jack it up and try to wobble the tire up and down, it shouldnt move hardly at all, if it does you might be able to just re-torque the BIG nut (100ft-lbs btw) and but either way you'll wanna replace them wheel bearings and seals.

Just did mine this weekend, new rotors, bearings/seals, b-pads, caliper and brake hoses. XD

Have you tried adjusting the box? It's possible although not sure if you can take a half turn of the steering wheel out of it.

Rick,

You have a steering box and coupler rebuild thread "stuck" . You gave an excellent rundown of the coupler but, you never posted the box part. I am about to rebuild my box and was wondering if you planned on adding the box part of the rebuild to that thread. I'm sure I'll figure it out on my own just wanting to see how you did it is all

Hey Ron, I never got around to rebuilding it. I took a pretty good one off a truck down at the yard......Take pictures and see if they will make a "sticky" out of it :)

Thanks guys, I saw some post on google somewhere and a guy removed the idler arm or what ever its called off the box itself. I just didnt know if I could take the nut and pin off and bolt it right up
