I've never liked the idea, BUT I see lots of people who rebuild carbs that bead blast the aluminum parts; what do you guys think; I know that glass beads clean well w/o the erosion etc of sand/black beauty (coal slag)

Don,

Bead blasting with 50-70 sieve glass beads produces great results. However, you must first disassemble the carb to its most basic elements. This means de-burring and removing the screws which retain the throttle, choke and air valve plates as well as everything else which can be unscrewed from and driven out of the carb first. If you don't, you'll never get all of that media grit out of it!

Also, perform any machine work such as throttle shaft bore rebushing or gasket flange resurfacing before blasting. It will produce a neater looking result.

Hope it turns out great!

Who can bore and bushing throttle shafts, mine has what sounds like a vacuum leak at only one spot in the throttle.

Six,

I can. I do 'em for $35 plus shipping. Send the base only, stripped of everything but the throttle shaft and lever(s).

Call me at 800-945-2272 if interested.

Hey fins, you wouldn't happen to have a good Carter BBD for a Slant would you? I sold all my good Carters (stupid me) and what I have left is all mis-matched apparently. I can trade you a whole box full of 2-bbl parts (bodies, air horns, throttle plates, metering rods, gaskets, check balls etc) for 1 good BBD jetted for a 225 Slant. LMK, I can get a pic of it all if you want. There's some Holley and Stromberg parts in there too.

hmmmm .... I might take you up on that with an old AFB I'm still trying to figure out what to do with... If I'm gonna rebuild the thing, might as well make it 'perfect'... ;)

Sorry, Speed, the only /6 BBD I ever had went away years ago with the '74 Valiant for which I had bought it (never installed it, though).

B,

No problem, but AFBs are $70 + shipping 'cause they have two shafts.

If you have ever looked closely, both shaft bores were factory-relieved so that only about 1/3 of the saft is supported where it passes through the casting -- they were designed to wear out! Therefore, we always rebush both shafts.

Same story as with Six: strip it completely except for the shafts, levers and t-plates. We'll handle the rest.

Fins do you only specialize in boring and bushing the throttle shafts or if I sent you the whole carb could you go through it and give it a once over. Its on a running truck, but it don't seem to be just right. At low RPM's it surges and lunges could be the shaft being worne but I'm not sure. Its not the accelerator pump its in good working order.

I gotta say that if Jeff is doing bushings for 35+ then jump on it because usually they are $59+ shipping. This is a good thing to do on Qjets as it virtually eliminates the vacuum leal through the throttles.

Six,

Yes, I can restore the whole carb. A 1-bbl starts at $280 plus shipping and a 2-bbl starts at $300 plus shipping. NO HOLLEYS. For that price, we rebush/reseal; straighten the warped castings; seal all passage plugs; replace all of the screws; protectively coat the float (after testing it); replace the screws and generally make the carb better than new. Kit and new base and air cleaner gasket are included; choke pull-off (if needed) may be extra. There is a backlog but we can secure your place in line with a $50 deposit, with or without the carburetor here. Call me at 800-945-2272 if interested since I don't do business over the internet.

DDPR,

Thanks. I rebush 1- and 2-bbl carb bases for $35 plus shipping, but 4-bbls (such as Q-Jets and AFBs) I do for $70 plus shipping since there are two throttle shafts. I use thin-wall brass bushings and an observer usually can't tell it has been rebushed once the carb is reassembled. I can usually turn a base around in a week or less. "Whole" carbs take several weeks longer.

Fins,
So if I were to send in the carb after I get in line the turn around time would be about two weeks? The carb is a reman but I must say it sucks. So I will seriously give this some thought.

Six,

Yes, the time spent here after your turn comes up is usually in the 2-3 week range. BTW, what is this carb? If it is a Carter 1-bbl, no problem. If it is a Holley 1-bbl, don't expect much of an improvement.

Its a two barrel (Super Six).

Six,

Same deal: if it's a Carter, no problem. If it's a Holley, don't expect too much; if so, I would prefer not to do it. Basic price is $300 + shipping either way.
