how many prongs (or whatever the term is) does it have on it?i saw a wire the other week and it was not hooked up.i could not see/feel anything unplugged.it was around the transmission mount.if that is it and i plug it up and it was bad what would happen if hooked up,could that be why it is unhooked?thanks

I had the exact same issue in my 86 D150 two weeks ago. It ended up being the neutral safety/backup switch located on the transmission. After all the work I did with sockets and bulbs the new switch did the trick- 11 bucks at autozone.

An automatic will have 3 pins, the outer 2 are for the backup lights. Power on 1, the other connects to the lights. (The center pin the connects to the neutral start relay.)
A manual has 2 pins connecting the same way as the outer pins on an auto.

Check this link to my thread with a similar problem (http://www.dodgetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=242385)

I replaced the switch and the plug, but never got it to work. One night I was in the mountains with some friends and some jolt, Jump or bump made them work1 I can't tell you how excited I was!!!! After all the wire replacing and tracing they FINALLY WORKED! But then another jolt, jump or bump made them stop working... Sucks..

*Edit*

My solution was hooking up 4 $12 Hella work lights (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HLA-H15986001&N=700+4294922591+115&autoview=sku) on the back of my truck with a toggle switch in the cab.

Also if your truck didn't have the NSS plugged in it wouldn't start. The switch makes it so your truck only starts in Nuetral and Park and makes the reverse lights come on.
