Can anyone tell me what this is and where it goes? It was laying on the intake manifold behind the ac compressor but wasn't attached to anything.

Looks like the condensor to me. It goes inside the distributor. It must be an old one that someone just dropped on top of the manifold.

It's a condenser... These were also used for noise suppression on radio.
The wire connected to one of the coil terminals and the pronged end under a coil bracket bolt, this is why it's large and has a longer wire than needed to fit in a distributor.
