So I was getting a price on some rims today. I asked for a qoute on 20"s and 18"s. The guy called me back and said I could only do a straight swap for 20"s as the 18"s would hit the calipers. Huh??
I told him the same truck has 17"s available but he told me if it comes with 17"s it has smaller calipers than if it came with stock 20"s.
Don't they all have the same brake setup?

Um...I don't think so. :)

The whole caliper thing.

So are you saying he should work with someone else?

I remember a few other posts where guys went from their 20s to 17s and the big ole tires and I don't remember any talk of changing the brake calipers. Unless I'm going crazy :D

Sorry....should have explained further. I've not heard of anything about calipers getting in the way with 17" wheels. Now, if he's stuffing big tires on a narrow rim, it'll rub, but sure not on the brake caliper.

Your right, he should work with someone else.

The tire guy you were talking to did not know if the 17s would fit, so it was easier for him to say they wouldn't fit than it was for him to find out the correct answer. Sounds like a sub par employee to me.

I think he was the owner. It seemed like he'd run into the problem before, maybe even on a different brand truck, so he assumed it's the same for all??? Either that or he just wanted to sell 20's.

I really dont think he wanted to put the effort into finding out if they would fit or not. His way of thinking was ... keep it the stock size, and don't waste his time.

my stock trx 4x4 came with 17s and i had the dealer swap them for 20s. So 17s should work.
