Hi all,

My GF has a 99' Plymouth Neon Espresso with the 2.0 DOHC engine. She wants to pep it up a little (she hats the fact that my Ram is faster). I know the stock AIT was designed like crap so I was thinking about getting her a new one. Any one have any ideas as to who makes decent CAI for this application? Any other ideas for performance parts would be appreciated. Thanks.

James

I know a lot of good ones for SOHC Neons, but I'm not sure about DOHC, you might want to asks this question at www.neons.org
They might know!

If your talking about making a custom unit.. you can do it for less than $100.

If you use an intake snorkel from a chrysler 3.0L V6, it is shaped in a U. This Tube will fit onto her stock throttle body, for the DOHC (which has two rad fans) you need to cut the tube at the top of the arc, and insert an extension... a piece of pvc pipe or exhaust tubing.. needs to have a 2.5" Diameter, and use hose clamps to hold it together.

Then this will allow it to go from the Throttle body, down infront of the battery. You will need to trim the excess from the front of the battery tray, and remove the dust/cooling cover.. don't cut the temperature sensor or battery hold down though.

Then using another short piece of the 2.5" piping attach a Cone Air Filter (K&N or the likes of) and Voila.

It's not as complicated as it sounds.. if you go take a look undet the hood and think.. it will all come together.

I have an extra one of these tubes if your intersted, or if you have any questions drop me an email.. I would be happy to explain more. nitfird@hotmail.com

Another one that can get some good improvements, if she has a 5spd... get the Throttle body from an automatic.. Manual TB's are 49mm wide, but Autos are 52mm.. you can direct swap them for the most part. the only complication can be cruise control, if one has it and the other doesn't, but that can be over come.

Good Luck,

we have a chrome header for the dohc in stock $249.99
we also custom build air intakes , if interested we could whip you up something in polished aluminum or steel (powder coated)
other than that , i have a set of ignition wires and msd is coming out with a coil for that .

Hey Poorboy... On a Stock Engine.. what good are MSD wires or coil pack going to do????? I am talking bang for your buck here!

Really on most stock engines.. the most dramatic mods are usually exhaust, intake, computer chip and suspension... even port and polishing would be ahead of plug wires and ignition...

in my experience you don't need to beef up ignition systems and spark control until your into changing things like cams, udp, adjustable cam gears, turbo, NOS or other major modifications which require adjustment and tuning of the management systems...

actually you'd be suprised , the wires and coil make somewhat of a difference . of course its not going to be dramatic but noticable.

actually you'd be suprised I'd be very suprised!

the wires and coil make somewhat of a difference Hmmmm...?

its not going to be dramatic but noticable I think this is arguable... I would Love to see dyno numbers on this.. but no one throws new wires in and then goes to see if their HP at the wheels jumped.. cause it doesn't!

All the mods listed above, and the one that James asked about in the first place WILL give a NOTICABLE difference... So why not put your money to better use?

power may not be reflected through dyno numbers ....... but over all throttle responce and mid range power should increase. usually the vehicle manufactors use the cheapest items they can when building a car or truck , ignition parts included. i am not saying that bang for buck is that great but when looking for a little extra power and with few items that are affordable for the neon (under $100.00 or so ) this is just one of the few small upgrades that can be made ....... no nothing spectacular but affordable and some what practical especially when doing a tune up anyway . just my 2cents

i'm with poorboy on this one. The plugs, bigger wires, and a hotter coil pack will give about 5-10 hp increase. If you aren't burnig all the fuel, maximum horsepower will not be acheived. What good is more air, if you can't use it properly?

anoughter thing that can be done is lower the car just a lil and maybe look into a body kit from Wings West, will make the car more Aerodynamic and better looking, also a good aftermarket exhaust will hep out in the power range. NOPI and APC and Pacesetter all make a nice kit, and a APC cold air intake works wonders
