Recently scored 1986, 3/4 ton, 318, 2bbl, sometimes scary stock ignition system, auto trans, 2.94 rear end, 47K miles (garage queen) one owner with all maintenence records from day one. Instead of building up more horsepower via the engine, I'm considering adding a gearvendor to fully utilize the stock factory torque/horsepower parameters. Want to tow a 3000lb travel trailer. Any suggestions/opinions about what you would prefer to upgrade, engine, aux trans, or...? buget for this project is $3500.
thanks for your time...

I would consider buying a magnum engine, 4spd OD transmission and 3.55-3.92 rear end with that budget.
The 2.94 ratio is about as good as it gets for fuel economy... For towing abilty an underdrive unit would be needed unless you want to be passed by a VW bus.

Not to be to negative,i would take your van and cash and trade it in on a newer van that is already set up for towing, bigger engine with fuel injection and better gearing with an overdrive.would save a lot of work and i dont think your 318 well last pulling the weight.i would go with anouther dodge though!
