Sounds like CLASSIC ballast resistor prob. 5 bucks at any parts store.

Dash 'power' is probably something else, but let's just try to get ya rolling for now... ;)

Will a ballast resistor from other 80's model trucks work on my 83..?
Do all 80's model trucks require pumping the pedal to start with mine you have to pump several times
until engine warms then it idles fine, it also seems a little sluggish until rpm picks up

Yes it will, just as long as the prongs are the same (there's a 2-prong and a 4-prong). And yes, pumping the pedal is normal for most carbed engines, although excessive pumping can indicate a problem somewhere. Generally if everything is in good working order, one or two pumps then turning it over should fire it up. If the choke isn't working (ie stuck open) you may have to pump it more. On mine with no choke, about 3 pumps is enough to fire it, then I have to keep it running until it warms up a bit, usually about a minute, then it will idle, low at first like around 400-500 rpm then up to around 700-800 when fully warm.
