on my truck the wire plug for the sensor is damaged.looks like someone used a knife or a screw driver to unplug it and messed it up.what is ths sensor for?i have another plug should i wire it up and plug it in?do you guys think it was damaged so it could not be used because that plug/sensor is no good?i had my wheel bearings installed last week.i have lost 2 caps on the same wheel.can i get another cap a size bigger, get same size and try to spread it apart so it will stay or something else? i will try to post a pic of the plug later today.the truck is a 86 d 150 with a 318.thanks

If you have another plug, just snip that one off right at the plug, and wire the new one up. Just be sure to connect the wires good, crimp-style butt connectors will work but soldering and heat shrink is the best way.

What year is your truck again? It might be an IAT sensor instead of a coolant sensor.

I agree with Speed, it could be an IAT. It has two wires, red and black and when looked in the FSM; it was suggested to be a "Water Thermistor" but that is located at the rear of the engine. Seeing that the oil and water temps were all one wire, I would exclude these. The 318 did have a detonation sensor drivers side front manifold but i have yet to find the color code or wiring diagram.
Bottom line....if you see the sensor and you have a broken fitting, do as speed says and snip it off and replace.

the truck is a 86 d 150 with a 318.i got the plug off of a newer truck not sure what year.it was in the same place though.what's a IAT?the wires on the plug i have(new one) is black with a white strip and the other wire is white or lite grey.the old plug is taped but a few inches away it looks like it is black wire and a red wire.would this be why the temp gauge hardly works.the gauge moves to the first or second line on the gauge.thanks

IAT= Intake Air Temperature which is used on fuel injected engine, has 2 terminals and is 3/8" NPT.
A temp. gauge sender has a single connection and is 1/8" NPT (small)

Ditto on B-300

IAT's were used on the late-model carbed engines, my Diplomat has one. It's located in the #8 runner though. Pic of yours looks to be in front of the air cleaner. The temp gauge probably doesn't move cause your thermostat is either not there or stuck open.

yes the plug is in front of the air cleaner.the temp gauge does move to the 1st to the 2nd line on the gauge.i just looked at the plugs and the look the are the same.this monday i am hoping to fix it.the newer plug has a white wire and the truck plug is red, just wire those 2 together?if the sensor or whatever it is is bad how would i know.how would the truck run etc.

Speed refered to IAT used on late model carb models... If you aren't using a feed back carb then this wire is doing nothing. It only works with the original feedback carb.
As for coolant sensors, they tend to be in the front of the manifold as thats were the coolant is.

today i fixed the plug and i saw some of the wire had been replaced and was left bare.i put some tape on it for now and i saw that the ac wire was not plugged together so i plugged it in.i started the truck and let it run for about 10 mins and it seemed good.i still dont have ac though thanks

there may not be any freon in the ac unit...the clutch will never engage if:
The wire is disconnected
The fuse is blown
No freon in the system
No belt on the pulley (actually it will engage just the compressor will not run)
