You'll need 360 truck motor mounts also.

Yeah, I was just gonna say, there is no such thing as a '60's 360 ... 273, 318. (Or if you're REAL LUCKY a 340..)
Also, I've never seen a 360 that was ever (From the factory) put in a Dart. A 360 was more/less a truck/van engine. More than likely a 318.
(Correct me if I'm wrong ... I've just never seen one...)
If you're changing from a 318 'car' engine to a 318 'truck' engine, I'm pretty sure all you need is the 'truck' oil pan and oil pump pick-up .... (Correct me if I'm wrong guys)
If changing from a 318 to a 360.. As Speed says, motor mounts... plus you'll need to change the torque converter (Harmonic balancer on the 360 should be OK) as the 318/360 are damn-near the same exact engine, but (Among some other minor things) the big difference being internally/externally balanced engines.

That's not to say it wasn't swapped in, then pulled out again... ;)

well turned out the guy decided not to sell the engine but i came across and 83 318 out of a station wagon. so same scenario all i really need is the truck oil pan and pick up right?
thanx

yep - and assuming you didn't send a rod out the bottom of the pan - the one on your truck will work fine.
everything else is a yank and replace

Good luck. I may suggest that while you are swapping the pan, might be worth the little extra effort to to the rear main seal - and brass freeze plugs since it is out and easy to get to everything....less than 20 bucks worth of material and extra insurance

one other thing to look at is the intake manifold - especially if you are retaining alotta original belt driven accessories - i was going to use an early 70's intake and while it'll bolt up and run the engine - it wouldn't allow me to bolt up the a/c compressor and would keep me from belting up the alt to a/c to crank. So, just a word of caution, look at the intakes to make sure they are similiar enough atleast where things get attached to it so that you don't get problems at the end of the project.

well yet again i did my research and im not finding an 83 station wagon w/ a 318. =/ so say its a 70's motor how would i go about smog?? could i use my origional intake or would i run into problems w/ brackets? im not worried bout a/c itll be my winter vehicle/beater.

Well, aside from the years a 318 is a 318 (well with a few differences). Basically any 318 from the range of 1972ish to 1987ish are interchangeable - only minor changes in them - usually the carb/intake manifold and exhaust manifolds. the '68 to around 71 ish (I know 68, 69 and 70 - not too sure about 71) are the same except the passenger side mounting bracket lugs are slightly different the back ear is located about 1/4" off. When i put my '70 318 in, i reused the '87 bracket, but I had to "persuade" the bracket with a big hammer and then it bolted in just fine.
The thing about the intake manifold - I'd look closely at the setup - even if you don't need/care about a/c, you might be able to remove it and it's related brackets and get a short belt, - i'll look at mine tonight and see if that is possible on mine (it's an 87 truck). As far as the emission stuff - i yanked all mine off, but you might need it in your state, and basically it's simply a matter of pulling it off the old motor and bolting all of it on the new one - should go on with no problems - you will more than likely have to use the exhaust manifolds from your truck. The early 318's will not have the smog hole provisions in the heads so if you have one of those, you will have to "mocked up the emmisions stuff" for your inspection - but it won't be functional. Chances are you'll be getting a mid to late 70's to mid to late 80's 318 and everything will be just fine.

ok thanx for your input and its from a dodge diplomat he says its an 85-87 either way its in the 80's which should work fine. i live in pa and theres no emissions testing where i live so the smog might go ;P

alright so i just got a confirmation the motor is actually a 79 out of a diplomat, ive seen it. =P anyways what would be some cheap mods to get more hp and low end torque??
Delray Dude
04-09-2009, 02:25 PM
it'll bolt in fine.
cheap mods.....loose all the smog crap. well worth the few minutes it takes to remove the crap.
headers or a good dual exhaust helps a bit. also a 4 bbl intake can be added.
On manifolds - i rig the heat riser to permanent open (it's the flap thing below on the passenger side manifold ).

I had my d150 with the same 317 and found a new 5.9L magnum for 200 bucks outa van. The only trouble I had was the new tranny was too long for the driveshaft, coulda cut it, but custum made engine mounts. The blocks are the same as far as i can see, the mounts on mine matched up.

You didn't forget to do up the tranny mount, did you? :)
As for the swap, everything should bolt in, except you'll have to cut up the floor (4-speed floor is different, has a bigger hump).

Depending on what year 360 the dart is the block may be bigger. 318 and 360s were wider:WHT:
