Before I plunk my hard earned cash down on a 2009 Laramie, There's
one thing that has been bugging me. I plan on buying a 4X4. Also,
the tires installed at the factory aren't tires that I would consider
putting on a four wheel drive vehicle. And the standard 20" tires
just equal big bucks for replacement tires, although I like the looks
of the factory 20" rims. I guess I'm asking for some advice from you
guys. What would you do? What if you found a truck on the lot that
is just what you wanted but it had 20" wheels?
What a quandry....
Help!
Thanks,
Dave

Ask the dealership to swap them out with some other vehicle and give you some form of credit. My buddy just got an 08 quad and didn't want the chrome clad 20's, so they swapped them and lowered the price. Granted, it was an 08 and they wanted ot get it off the lot, but any decent dealer is going to want to move their inventory.

I love the stock 20s and wouldnt even think about changing them out. If you really dont want them, when you get it sell them and then get some rims that you want. A good AT tire for those rims runs about $200 per.

I like the look of the stock 20" rims for the Laramie. I really don't like the
17" rims. I guess I'm thinking about when it's time to replace the tires.
200 bucks a pop isn't cheap. I bought two 285/60/18 Falken ST-Z04
tires for my F-150 at $115 a piece, but that was like 1 1/2 tears ago.

If you don't want the 20" and don't like the 17", I guess your best bet is to buy it as is and upgrade, sell the originals on here or Ebay. But it will probably cost you more in the end that if you just kept the original 20" and bought tires for them at some point. Even if they were $200 each, you would spend an extra $340 (based on your numbers) for one tire change which should get you 80,000 to 100,000 miles out of the truck. Certainly going to cost you a lot more than that if you do a complete switch even if you sell the stockers.
I think the 20's look good and would just keep the factory rims and tires. Unless you have offroading plans.

The Goodyear HPs that came on my 03 were wore out so bad at 35,000 that holes started coming in them..I had them replaced with the 20inch Michelins which are even more expensive..About 250 a piece but they are better..SMoother and quieter...I now have about 87,000 on the truck and they are getting wore pretty bad...I always have them rotated and lined but on the curvey roads and a truck I have been told 50k plus is very good for the tire life..The Michelins have also lasted longer than the Good years..You can go with cheaper options but I won't and wished you had option of the Michelins factory.....

I would more than likely keep the 20" tires & wheels that the factory installed.
I like the looks of the 20" rims. It would take a bit getting used to the fact that
I will be running street tires on a 4X4 vehicle. Every 4X4 I have owned I have
always had tires that were a bit more agressive than regular street/sport truck
tires. Just A/T tires, no mudders. For dirt roads they will probably be fine.
Am I going overboard thinking about this? I hope not. I just hope I get good
tread life out of the original set. Then maybe some BFG All Terrain T/A's?
Nitto Terra Grapplers? I Don't want noisy tires that people can hear me coming
200 yards away though.......:D

All terrian I say Michelins Man....They are the quietest...All these aggressive tread tires I have no clue cause I would never run Mud clogs like that on a new 09 Ram....

You can always trade in your new factory tires for a credit at a tire store and select new ones.
My friends I worked with talked me into taking one of my new trucks to a goodyear store and buying new tires the first week I had the truck. I though I was crazy for doing this but it turned out to be the best thing I could have done.
Tires performed great and I received lots of complements. These were just more aggressive than stock.

Just ask your dealer, I did, most people won't agree, but I like what I like, I thought the grill on the 09 Laramie was a little busy and I liked the cleaner look of the SLT grill much better. Also I am old school, I prefer 5 spoke wheel's over 6 spoke wheels. So I ask the dealer to swap out the grill and wheels with another truck on the lot and they did it for me..... No charge
