I found a 87 Ramcharger with a hydrolock 318 , bodylift and worn out 35'' for 1500$ obo . I was wondering what to look for before to buy ?
Probably water in both differentials ...
Where to look for rust ?
What else ?
Thanks

I think i'd like you to post pics of your ram. :D
Hmm...Looks nice, But I say he should include the front bumper. :thatfunny
Personally I think $1500 is alittle much. . .I wouldnt go higher than $1000 for it, it looks worn out.
I'd look for rust inside and under the body.
Whats up with the hood? Is it dented on the side or is it the picture?
Better?

He 's not selling the plow so I guess the stock front bumper comes with the truck .
Thanks

It looks solid in the pictures. IMO if its solid $1500.00 isnt out of line for a decent Ramcharger. How does it run?

Reading isn't some peoples strong suit.
I think $1500 is WAY to much for a truck that doesn't run. A locked up 5.2... The transmissions are bulletproof, yes, but damn, a plow wrecks HAVOC on transmissions.
So, It all depends on what you want it for.
As for rust, all the doors at the bottom LOVE to rust out. the windshield cowl rusts out too.

A hydro-lock occurs when the cylinder sucks in water, which will not compress therefore locking the engine up. Normally bends rods and sometimes the crankshaft. :gr_patrio

I've seen hydrolock in person a few times while wheelin' in the Jeep. There's always one that thinks they're in a boat. A CAI can be a culprit as well.

Sorry... LMAO!
Sometimes you can fix hydroloc with a teaspoon of transmission fluid in each cyc. Course, I've only heard of this in 'theory' never seen it work...

I don't think transmission fluid will fix the one Jesse James showed.:gr_patrio

Hydrolocked means that liquid cannot be compressed. This is how the theory of hydraulics works. 440 4spd is a good dude! He was just trying to help. If an engine has been in such a state. Expect it to be junk. The tranny, if used behind the 'plow' will most likely be repairable but if he didnt use a cooler expect it to be marginal at best. Sounds like it may need an entire driveline except the tranny? 1500.00 is a bit high, or maybe the owner is. 800.00- 1,000 tops!

The only way you are going to help a hydrolocked motor is if you catch it as soon as it gets in the intake and you shut down the motor in time. Take out the spark plugs and crank it over to get the water out. At that time it might help to use a little ATF in each cylinder prior to firing it back up, but most of the time water + motor = junk. The only guarantee is to stay the hell out of the water in the first place.
....and trust me, I speak from experience. Been there done that.

BTW - for 1000-1200 I would jump on that RC with a bad motor/trans, closer to 1500 with a bad motor if the frame/body are as clean as it looks in the pic. Not many rust free ones left in the salt belt and the few that are left will pull a premium.

I wouldn't pay much more than $500.00 to $800.00 for one that doesn't run. As for rust, I would look in the places the other people said and the front fenders at the door have a tendency to rust also.

If it were in AZ I wouldn't either. You pay a premium for rust free vehicles up here.

:rck:It probably will need a new trans from plowing(mine did--I paid $800 to rebuild 6 years ago when I bought the truck for $900) You will need to rebuild the engine if it's been hydro-locked ,providing the block hasn't been harmed. The body looks good. Check the door bottoms, cab corners, the wheel arches and above the windshield for rust. I had to fix all of those on my '89 D150. Your best bet is to find out the cost of an engine/trans combo from a rebuild source and go from there. Sounds like I'm throwing you a "Downer" but it will pay in the long run if you look at the truck with a realistic eye. Keep on truckin'!

The main reason the fenders rust right behind the front wheels is because leaves and other crap get in through the cowl vents and builds up inside the fender. Ever open the kick panel vents while going down the highway and get leaves and dirt coming in the cab?
As for the price, it is worth whatever you are willing to pay! You only have to justify the price to yourself :)

I don't know the op's location, but in my area in Tn I have been seeing the 4x4 RC bringing around $1200-1800 w/bad engine or other drivetrain parts. $2250-4500 running. The 2x4 are bringing $14-2500 running good or around $400-600 w/ bad drive train parts.

Thanks lilredhunter for the info on the value of these RC , it's the only one for sale in my area since january so I didn't know their value .

They seem to crawl out of the woodwork around here when winter hits. I found a 89RC that needed a tranny and the guy wanted $400 for it. It had about a 6 inch lift done to it and had new tires. But the value is what you want to pay compared to what it can be bought for. Like the old saying it is worth what the market will bare.I would go show him about $600 and I mean actually show him the cash. That can have a lot of clout as compared to just saying I will give you $600 for it. That way they can see the cash and if they say no they can see it walking away.

That has worked for me in the past as they don't like to see cash walking away, so they usually take it..

Check and make sure the frame isnt cracked, especially between the front bumper and the cab. i have had two trucks that used to be plow trucks and both of them had broken frames. i ended up using them for parts.
