I am starting to look for a new truck. I am in no hurry, I want to make the right choices and be happy with my truck. Here is the deal, I want to put at least an 10" lift on whatever truck I get and run 40"+ tires. My question is, should I look towards a diesel for better mpg's ?? I am thinking that with the low end torque that a diesel will net me better mpg's. Am I correct on this ?? Thanks for any info, I have never owned a diesel before so I am finding out all I can now before I buy. Checkmate:)

Diesels are torque monsters
I'll try to find out if there is a 10" lift available - although I've seen some huge tires on Dodges ... so somehow they are getting them up n the air !

I know you have all the good links Ram Man, so if you do find something it would be great. Problem is that if I go for a 2003 2500 I will have to wait for ??? long to see who makes a lift for it. Definately getting something though. I have the itch and the wife keeps telling me that If I don't decide soon that she will be the one getting the new vehicle. I told her fine, we will keep my truck and get her a 2500 QC. She wouldn't go for it.:D . I got to tell you guys, I was put to the test today. We were at my wifes grandparents for the 4th and he has a 2001 F350 Dually V10 for sale. He just got done fixing it (accident). This thing has 4 full size doors, leather interior and every option some cadillacs have. He told me he wanted 26,000 for it, but If I was interested he would sell it to me cheaper. That truck bluebooks for over 30,000 and has something like 5,000 miles on it. I was thinkin', but as much as I was dually happy years ago, they aren't too fun, or shall I say cheap, to lift up high. I will leave the dually lifting to the group at Siblingrivalry.com I don't have that kind of $$$:D

Yup, seen both of them before. I don't want the scissor lift look though:D I think I have decided to throw the 3" body lift on soon. Seems alot of guys are running the 5/3 combo with 35's. I thought it would look stupid, but they seem to look okay.
The only production 10" lift I know of for the Ram is by Whiplash, but I have not heard good things about them (and they haven't been in the off-road suspension business for very long). Skyjacker has a new 7" lift available for the '94-'01 model Rams which I have read very good things about (except for price) in 4Wheel & Off-Road. The kit is available with the Skyking coilover spring package for additional $. I was interested until I found out that the basic kit is about $2400, and about $4000 with the Skyking upgrade. Probably the best lift out there for the Ram 2500HD (V10 and diesel), but you pay a premium price for it. Diesel or V10 would give you enough twist to turn big tires, but the diesel would give you better fuel economy.

O.K. here is my thoughts, if I can't find an 8 or 10" lift for the truck I buy, I will make my own lift. The rear is obviously easy, have custom springs made and make some new shock mounts. The tricky part would be the front. If I were to do a 2nd gen Ram, I would lengthen the control arms like the cepek kit, then see about getting some special coil springs. As for the steering and trac bar, they aren't too big of a deal. Obviously I would have to do something about the driveshaft up fron because a 10"drop will cause it to hit the crossmember. I think this will be what I do. By the way, if you were wondering, My father and father in law both are tool and die guys and can make any parts I need for the steering etc. Yep, that is what I think I will end up doing. I will also have all the parts powder coated to the color of my choice. If all goes well with it maybe we could get some guinia pigs. I would however put it to the test. But with the cost of material not being a big factor I will have a strong kit. Afterall, it's not like I am trying to squeeze every penny out of it by buying foreign steel like some companies probably do.

didn't forget about you - just havent come up with any huge lifts
Rancho
Skyjacker
Performance Accessories
Trailmaster
Superlift all have some version of the 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 in lifts
some have 2" or 3" body lifts, but even with those, you wont be at 10 ....

I have a 5" susp on mine now with extra spings in the rear which put the front at 5" (actually 6.5, but will sag) and the rear at 9". I have a 3"body waiting to go on. After that I am thinking about Daystar 2" coil spcers for the front. That will put me at 10" for the front and 12" for the rear.
BUT I don't want to do all this for my next truck (extra springs, coil spacer etc.) That is why I am looking now. I am really leaning towards a 2003 2500 with the diesel in it. You know what that means... more weight in the front end.

I like the look of a lifted truck, but don't have any experience in that area to offer. I have copied this thread into the 2nd and 3rd Generation 4WD forums to try and generate some more input. Check those forums as well to see if there is any additional thoughts. Good luck!!!!
