i just got a 2001 ram and i would just like to know if there is anything i could do to to get a dramatic increase in performance on a budget of about $250.
2001 ram 5.2 liter
K&N High flow air filter
helix power tower throttle body spacer
flowmaster 40 series muffler

How do you like the throttlebody spacer? What is your opinion of it? better performance or not? I have a Holley triangle air filter on my 02 Ram. Its the only mod I hve right now but I am looking at doing the exhaust next, maybe eliminating the muffler and just running a straight pipe after the cat to see what happens. Any suggestions or opinions?
You might try adding a high-flow cat to your exhaust. It was one thing suggested to me by my local speed shop.

TB spacers are a waste. I tried it at the track and got no difference whats so ever. When was the last year of the 5.2L. I thought it was like 99 or 00? As far as best mod I would say a throttle body would be the best way to spend the money.

yeha i was considering the high-flow cat or either the throttle body, thanks for the help, but yeah with one more thing on the throttle body spacer besides getting better performance it also made my truck sound a bit louder and deeper tone but i guess it just depends on your truck

the 4.7 doesn't like it at all. I ran one run with and one run without. The run without was like a couple of hundredths faster...so pretty much the same. It did make the intake sound cool though. I think the restrict the air though. With a bigger TB it can only hurt air flow I would think.

what gear ratios do you think would be better for my 2001 ram

4.10 is popular. That seems to be the ratio that helps the most without blowing all your MPG. Most people say they are very happy with 4.10's. If you have a 3.55 there will be a large gain.

Oops. It's an 01 Ram and I said 02. DOH! thannks for the info on the tb spacers. I also tought of going to the lower gearing. I am not sure which mine has in it. I don't think its the 3:55, I think its taller than that. If it's not I thought of going to the 3:55. What kind of improvement might I get with a different TB? I hear, from posts in this forum, that the Fastman tb's are pretty good. Just don't know which one is right for my truck. lol

It should work great for your truck, even better if you plan on intake and headers in the future. I got a tenth in the quarter out of my fastman. which is pretty good in my book.

Find yourself a used programmer for that price.

i agree with pyssed. find a hypertech or superchips.

how did the supercharger work on your truck? what effect did it have on the M.P.G. as well?

The s/c works great. I get about 3 mph better on the highway but the intown is around 11mpg. Just a shade over 300 rwhp and a flat torque curve that stays above 300 ft/lbs. all the way to redline.

hey pyssed, what are running in the quarter? Is the SC the only mod. Are you 2 wheel or 4x4?

i just got the superchips tuner, it's great, more power and torque it was worth the dough.

14.7 in the quarter mile in albuquerque, nm. I run stock cpu for now but the tb, intake manifold, and clylinder heads aren't factory anymore. I have headers back on the exhaust side. Needs gears and cam to get the most out of her.

I'd deffinitly get a Hypertech programmer.. It will give you the biggest bang for your buck.. You can get the hypertechs off ebay usually for under $300 depending on how common that year is.. I have one on order from a performance place here and am waiting for its arrival..

The Fastman TB is a Great deal as well. I'd get the 50mm like he recommends if you do that.. It is a great deal.. you can always do what i did to.. Get a TB from him and get a $50 intake off ebay.. They worked great in combination with each other..
Exhaust is a good idea, but it will be over $250 most likely for something decent..

Oh yeah and i have a PowerAid TB spacer on mine for a year, basically because i was to lazy to take the damn thing off. I NEVER notice a difference at all.. It was a waste of money.. although some idiot bought it off ebay for $65... haha.. Anyways.. IT was explained to me at one point if i can get this right.. The TB spacer will only work if the TB has the injectors on it. In that case the spacer gives more room for the air/fuel mixture and it burns more effiently. However in a DODGE, like we have, the injectors are in the manifold so the spacer is just that... Buts a space between the TB and the manifold.. IT spins that air but what does spinning air do with out the fuel in it? NOTHING.. That and gets in the way when you wanna put a Cool air intake on.. haha

Spacers will work on an efi (inj in tb) but not a modern mulitport fi.

Spacers for carbs and the older efi (inj. in tb) worked by thermally isolating the carb and fuel in the bowls from the hot intake manifold. Old school guys made them from wood. Most everyone (carbed) use composite materials instead now.

2001 was the last year for the 318.
