I have a 1972 D100 pickup. I want to relocate the fuel tank from behind the seat to inside the frame. I need all the advice I can get. What year and size tanks will fit there. How big of a job is it.

I went the other direction with mine, (Frame to cab)
Not entirely sure what years will fit but all the way up to 80 should be a direct swap.
Long or short bed?
You will need to cut a hole in your bed and it won't sit flush unless you can cut the hole from another bed that already has the depression in the steel. If you can get a donor truck you can get all the hardware to make it happen (brackets straps etc). It took me about 1.5 hours to install the in cab tank re route the fuel lines sending unit wire and drill the required holes and what not. Should be almost as easy to go the other direction with the exception of drilling holes in your frame to mount the strap brackets and drilling the hole in your bed.

I have an 82.. the tank is under the bed, it is a 30 gal tank. I am not sure what size your bed is or what the clearance is underneath of yours. But you should have no real problems getting one underneath yours.

The only tank that will fit is from a '72 or '73, and the standard cab version is the different than the club cab. You will not find a new standard cab tank anywhere, but there was a NOS club cab version on e-bay last week, so It might still be there. You can use the club cab version on a standard cab only if you use a club cab sending unit.
You will also need the cab mounted filler tube from a dual tank truck, and then you will have to weld a patch over the tube on the cab tank side, since both tanks fill from the same point.
The frame mounted tank of those years fills on the forward, lower edge of the tank, so you will have to fabricate a "Z" shaped pipe so you can use straight sections of fuel-proof flexible hose to attach the filler tube to the tank. The reason being, you can not find the stock hose, either NOS or aftermarket. I used exhaust pipe to make the Z.
Later tanks will not fit unless you move your filler to the side of the box and add the clearance bump inside the box. You might also run into some sender and vent issues.
