Any of you guys ever try one of those aftermarket wiper delays?
(You guys with 70's trucks know how the 'slow' setting is fast and the 'fast' setting, is like 800 mph)

I see one from JC Whitney, but I'm betting it's a 'Made in China' hunk of crap.

Any recommendations, or info to share?

I didn't know they still made them. I want one too. :gr_patrio

I haven't looked for them for years.... About 10yrs ago some who claimed they invented the delay wiper system won a court case agains't the big 3 and I haven't seen them since except in a boneyard twice.

Not sure about the after market. I have been eyeballing the fsm and i do not see where you need any different wiper moter...just the circuitry and the the special in dash resistor with the switch. So I think I am going to go back to the boneyard and grab all that seeing as how dodge always wired for the most options anyway.

Well, this is what I was looking at...

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2004484/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2004484/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=wiper+delay

I'm figuring it's some sort of capacitive-discharge system... But $19.00 ?? ...
It's GOT to be some sort of 'Made in China' hunk of crap....

I just don't want to rig it up and then have the thing FAIL on me at the worst possible moment... Which is the way that stuff usually works....

i agree with the first reviewer at JC Whitney...desolder the unit ...get rid of the box keep the face plate and mount it someplace nice..the unit is giant!

The factory delay wipers have more terminals on the switch and a time delay relay according to the diagram in the Haynes manual. Also I replaced a wiper motor on my '78 van and the instructions also show a "dwell switch" on the motor gearbox that has 2 terminals.

I've had one in my 79 over 10yrs.Easy to hook-up and works great. As for failure, the oem wiper switch over rides it so no problem.

Great info Amp

When I was an apprentice we made one in school. It was small, simple to make and worked well on my old Malibu. I'll see if I can find the circuit diagram.

Ah! THAT'S what I wanted to hear ;)
Having it fail is one thing (Which I expect of all things these days) .. Just didn't want it to happen when it's dark, snow is blowing, etc etc.... But if I can still have wipers, that's OK...

Hey, that'd be great... I'd much rather build my own :D

When I took computer maintainence technology in college there was a wiring diagram in the specs book for the 555 timer. The 555 can be bought at Radio Shack and be set to various time settings using 2 resistors and a capacitor. (A potienemeter could be used for adjustablity.) If I recall correctly the timer turned a relay to the wiper motor on and off as the 555 is a type circuit which is low current.

Mmmmm .... Interesting. Sounds like it can be built with $5.00 worth of parts.
And a lot smaller than the JCW unit. That would be pretty nice.. I could see mounting a small circuit board somewhere around the fuse/glove box, and running a pot over by the regular wiper switch. Even getting another knob from a junkyard for the pot so it 'looks' factory...

get one from a pre 81. After that the knob stems are too long. I kept my light switch off my 73 i use it for the fog/front off road lights. There is that resistor that runs around on that ceramic disk that i just know you can modify for a delay....

Found these two schematics on the net.
I'm guessing that if the JCW one is anything like either one of these, I might be better/cheaper off just getting that one ... Probably moding the pot so it's remote and hiding the circuit board up under the dash.
Ehh ... If it's a hunk of junk, I guess it wouldn't be the first time a threw a $20.00 bill away...

Well it sure took me a long time to find my old notes. Buried in cardboard boxes in the old grainery... :)
I took my electrical apprenticeship in the late 70's and I built one of these for my old '77 Malibu. It is very simple and worked well in that car for as long as I had it.
I scanned the pages so hope they are legible.

That's pretty interesting Buck... Thanks! Certainly a lot less parts that the other designs I found. (And less is always better ;) )
I'm wondering how hard it might be to find Q1 & 2 ... Might not be your standard Radio Shack fare....

It's been a long time but I think they are pretty standard items. I bought them at B&E Electronics and they had lots of them on the shelf.

I bought what looks like a very similar unit about 30 years ago and it's still working great. It's in its third vehicle. It's pretty easy to hook up and has never given trouble. A bargain at that price to get variable intermittent wipers. It even works on systems that have those reversing parking wipers like you used to see in the 70's.
