My 76 d100 318 idles a little rough but when you rev it up it sounds awesome and clean. I drop it into drive and it starts idling rough again. When i start heading down the street it runs rough and jumps all over the place. I had a mechanic i know take a peak at it and he said the timing was as close as he could get it but it seems to have some slop in the chain. Now he only knows so much about these old beasts so i wanted to see what you guys thought before I go to replace that in this freezing ohio weather.

I would say that there is a pretty good chance the timing chain is worn. Has it been tuned up recently?:gr_patrio

well the wires n cap rnt too old but my plugs seem to fowl quickly and they havent been changed in a while. I guess i will put new plugs in it and if that doesnt help i will put a chain and gears on. Could it still be the plugs if I can rev it up and not here it missing at all?

Yep, plugs and/or wires will break down more with a load on them.:gr_patrio

well then im doin the tune up first then I will worry about the timing chain if that doesnt fix the problem

New plugs will never fix a foul issue...either you are to rich or you have a weak oil ring (top piston ring) I would do a compression check on all cylinders and see if they are within 10% of each other. if they are then put on a new cap rotor plugs and time it out...keep in mind that you may have a weak coil.

Especially if you think or know it's the original chain and gears...

yes, nylon gears....

I put double roller chain and gears in everything when replacing. :gr_patrio

well looks like i need to invest in a compression guage

well it was not the timing chain. I went out and pulled the plugs and they were all black. 1 did have oil on it but all the others were black and sooty looking. I think that means I am running too rich right? If so how can I fix that so I dont need a new set of plugs next week?

did you check the compression? record the number of turns your mixture screws are out and then turn them all the way in lightly seating them. Then turn them out 1.75 turns, at this point i use a vacuum guage but if you do not have one...you can do it the po mans way....turn the screws slightly in and out and evenly until the rpm starts to drop off and smell the exhaust.

Sounds like a carb problem or vacuum leak. Is the distributor vacuum pot hooked to straight vacuum port, or to a ported output (only has vacuum when the throttle is opened)? If it's hooked to a straight vacuum port that might cause some issues. Also could be a weak dizzy advance spring. I'd look at the carb first though.

well I have not bought a compression gauge yet. I dont really know a lot about carbs but the guy who put mine on put a lot of golf tees in the lines to block them. I ll go take a pic to show you guys

well now im thinking that maybe its running rich cause I put that bigger carb and 360 intake on my 318 without any adjustments. Maybe the jets are too large and the carb thinks its dumping fuel into a 360 which would need more fuel.

Sounds logical to me :) Have you adjusted the idle mix screws yet?

no not yet not quite sure what screw is what. There are a lot of screws on it and my manual didnt have this carb in it I THINK? Anyone got any pics of whats what on the bigger 2 bbl carb that fits on the 360 intake

Well, a lot of golf tees could possibly be a big part of your problem. I would say that you first need to clean up the vacuum lines and eliminate any leaks first. What kind of carb is it? Post some good clear pics so that everyone can take a look at it and I think you'll get some good advice.
