ok my 76 dodge d100 has one bright headlight and a very dim one. Replaced the dim one and still dim. Figured bad ground or something but could not find it. I saw an article in here where some of the guys rewired there lights with a relay and made them brighter. I cant find that thread now. Would doing this fix my problem or does it use the existing wiring. If it will work could someone give me instructions on how to fix this. Thanks you dodge guys are usually more knowledgable than the best shop in town. Nobody can work on the old trucks anymore besides u guys. Thanks Ahead of time for all the help.

the light that is dim has either a corroded connector or a bad ground. search the posts by bherder or chump...i think one or both of them had some good insight.

As long as you're having to take the time to fix your headlights, may as well install relays. You may be able to use your existing wiring to power the relay switches, since they draw very little current, although you will at the very least want to make sure all the wire terminals are solid.

As far as how to wire up relays, it's very easy and has been discussed numerous times here (just do a search). Basically you feed the relays directly off the alternator (or battery, depending on whether you're charging circuit has been modified), and the relays send the juice to the lights. If you use proper sized wire and good techniques, you'll not only have 100% reliable lights but they'll be noticeably brighter than factory.

Once you get going, if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. It's pretty straightforward, though.

Waytek wire is a good place to get materials.

what do you mean by if my charge circuit has been modified. I did have to rewire the alt. to bypass the bulkhead connector and the amp guage cause it was all fried just like many of the other old dodges.

bherder did an awesome job on the headlights. i found his thread. in doing that i found the instrument cluster thread and now i will jump into that too. I am really excited. Did anyone ever get the part #'s for the heater lights to switch over to led's

What I meant about modifying the charging circuit is whether you bypassed the ammeter. If you didn't, it's better to tap directly into the alternator output rather than over on the battery side of the circuit because then you're not sending all the headlamp current through the ammeter, but it sounds like you already took your ammeter out of the loop.

yep, chased charging problems for 6 months before i found the thread about bypassing the ammeter
