How many of you store your spare tire in the original location under the bed vs just laying it in the bed?

I got a flat in a bad spot the other night and had to change it in the mud and rain. Was not fun getting under the bed to pull the spare down. I have a bedliner and was thinking about bolting a couple of tie downs to it and securing the spare flat with a chain and lock to prevent theft and it flying around in case of an accident. Your thoughts?

It would be nice to have one of the cable lift systems underneath like what is on new trucks. Ya don't need the spare very often anyway...

I never carried one :D If I did it was just laying in the bed.

The trailer hitch won't permit under-bed mounting, so mine is now mounted to the left inner bedside with a special no-drill mount which I bought. I paid $43 for it as I recall. If anybody wants the source, I may still have it filed.

The good part: thusly mounted under the cap (topper, shell, whatever) it stays nice and clean and accessible.

In my shed.
ME too. Yeah I've been in that mudhole situation before too; I was thinking of seeing if anyone made the front bumper mount any more, like the van nose motorhomes had, and like my Dad's '71 Ford had.

I change mine over to a cable system. I have a Class 4 trailer hitch that I moved to the end of the frame. There is a 33x10.50x15 tire in the stock spare area under the bed.

mine was in the stock location, but was a pain to get to. And it was just plain ole warn out. I just tossed it out and don't intend on putting anything back there. I will probaly have the mount taken off and then maybe put it somewhere else in the bed. I plan on lowering it, so I don't want anything there.

Mine is under the bed in the stock location. I think 72D100 has his mounted underneath as well and he has a frame mounted hitch. I think he modified the brackets a little to make it work.

No not quite; vertically in front of the grille. also made a good "handle" to grab onto for those times I had to help Dad work on it so I could climb up to the bumper. (I was only 8 or 10 when Dad had that truck)

In the bed. First thing I do with any truck I buy is put the spare in the bed. I hate crawling under a truck to get the spare. You know it always rains when your have a flat and the spare is under the truck.

Mark,

Ain't that a wierd correlation between flat tires and rain?

It's the same with the wipers -- they never quit working unless it's rainin'!

Cribbs is correct, mine on the '72 is in the original spot and yes I have a class 5 frame mounted hitch, I had to cut a notch about 3/4" x 5" on the bottom of the passenger side bracket of the hitch so that the spare tire brace/holder would still go all the way up to the factory position. Oh yea and the spare is 30 X 9.50 so it not a small one either! If anyone would like pics of the hitch with the spare let me...

My 76 has the extra tank where the spare would go, so it is mounted right behind the drivers side of the bed up front.
