I am in the process of dropping a reman’ed engine in my 95 Dakota Sport, and have a question about my 5 speed trany. What fluid should I put in it? I plan to go with synthetic, but...? I checked by book, and it tells me something like 10W40, but that was not what I had expected (more like 70w), so I asked a few people, and got more answers. My father-in-law said he had been using ATF in it when I bought it from him. The last thing that I was told was that if it has ATF in it, to keep putting ATF in it. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure you are NOT supposed to put synthetic in a new / rebuilt motor until its broken in ...
I'd drive it over 500 miles at least before pouring some syn in ..
... ATF ?
hmmm not sure about that one ...
as for a brand, I prefer Royal Purple, but the subject of synthetic oil is like asking someone what their favorite brand of spark plug or car wax is ... you are bound to get a ton of different answers ...

I was planning on running reg oil in the engine for about the first week. With my commute, that will be about 500 miles. I already have the oil and oil filter for the first 500 miles and for the first oil change. I am trying to find out about the trany now. No two places have said the same thing. The one that really caught me off guard was that it has Auto Trany Fluid in it.
Thanks,

My father in law's 1993 Dakota 4wd called for 75w-90 oil in trans. I changed it yesterday with super S synthetic 75w-90. First time it had been done, (96k). Book said every 37,500. Big hairball of sludge and transmission shavings/goo on magnet mounted in drain plug. Shifts much better now. Due to angle of vehicle on ramps, not all old crap came out, will do it again in @3months. Added @2.9qts out fo 3.1. Not hard to do. Anyway, shifts nice now, no grinding, just smoothness.

If your manual specifies 10w-30 engine oil, use it. Certain Manual trannies call for engine oil, some call for gear lube, and some call for ATF.
