I had a coupon for an alignment at a well known local chain. It pulled to the right worse after the "alignment". Cost 44$.

In my experience taking a van to be aligned at the local Pep Boys or Goodyear is a waste of money. I took my van to a shop that deals mostly with trucks. It cost more, but I got a very good alignment and after 3 years my tires still look new.
"set the toe and let it go" philosphy does not work on these rigs.

Depends on who's actually doing the alignment. I took mine to a local firestone dealer recommended by an aquaintence who owns a repair shop. It's all about experience. A seasoned old pro vs. a younger kid,(pep boys). I actually asked them who'll be doing it and asked how long he's been doing them, and checked him out inconspicuously. (I think they would of thrown me out if asked how old he was). Anyways, find out their policy, like a $20 rack charge if they can't align it, deductible from the alignment when you come back. Always wait for the vehicle and go outside and watch the guy through the bay door from the parking lot. If they say they can't do it because some part has too much play, take it home and check it out. They make money selling work, not alignments.
If they look like the IRS just walked in when you come back, congratulations, you got to them. You're no longer a push-over.
