I was tinkering around with the vacum lines and all of sudden it shut off. I tried to restart and smoke can out a little from under the hood. Now I have no spark.
Thanks for your help...

Check the wires that power the coil and see if you have power and/or ground.
Possible problems:
Wiring for the coil pack bad,
Bad coil,
Bad ASD relay, if it has one,
Broken rotor bug
Hopefully not the PCM

The electrical wire going to the coil pack was melted to the exhaust. I pulled it off and taped it up with electrical tape. When this wire shorted to ground what did it fry?

Have you checked all of the fuese? A shorted wire will blow a fuse.
Does the wire look simular to the sparkplug wires? If so buy new coil wire, may have to buy the complete set that includes the spark plug wires.
Is it a small diamiter standard wire? If so what color is the wire that you put the electrical tape on?

The wire was the electrical wire that plugs in the bottom of the coil. one wire is red/green the other blue.

Repair those wires and you should be fine. Hopefully you didn't fry the ECM.
BTW, your van is painted exactly like my '94 which is also an Elk conversion. Funny.

I changed the coil and the coil wire... checked all the fuses.. Still nothing.... What do I check next.:bawl:

With a volt meter check for power on the Dark Green/Orange Strip wire, this wire is the hot side for your coil pack, injectors, O2 Sensors and some other items. This wire comes from the Pin 57 on your ECM. If you have power there at the pin and not at the coil pack then look for a break in that wire. If no power even when cranking the motor on this wire then the ECM may be shot.
The Gray wire on the coil pack comes from Pin 20 which is the IGN Coil Driver that the computer controls.
Also make sure the ECM is getting power to it on Pin 3 (Red Wire), if no power going in then that wire needs repaired.

Well I checked and the wire's and I good ohms to Pin 57 O/R and pin 19 Gray from the plug that plugs in coil.
I do have 12V on pin 3. So I guess that rules out the ASD.
I have no Voltage on pin 57 cranking or not.
Would you now relpace the ECM?
Hey Dodgevanman since your van is just like mine can I borrow yours for a while :D

Worse case is that you shorted out something in the ECM when those wire hit the manifold. Not sure if any of this could have damaged the crank sensor or not.

Sure..come and get it. It's only got a 318 though. 160K and still going strong except for a cooky fuel gauge.

Since there is no voltage on pin 57's wire even when cranking then yes I would look into getting a new ECM.

R u sure the wires that where melted and taped up are in good shape, they didnt burn right thru did they?

Yes I'm sure their good. I checked the ohms from the where the wire plugs in the coil to the pins that plug in the ECM.
I've ordered a used ECM from a parts house in NH $135.00. It should be in Thursday 10/30. I will let you know how it works out...
Hey Dodgevanman once I got to looking at the part number for my ECM I discovered I have a 318 instead of a 360. Go figure.. The guy who sold me the van told me it was a 360. I went through my papers and found the price sticker on the van when it sold new. $38K I couldn't belive it...
So I guess I could have drove up and borrowed yours...

The 8th digit of the VIN should be a Y if it's a 318 or a Z if it's a 360.
Some folks just don't know what they're selling.
$38K...WOW! The new fully loaded Chevy conversions are going for upwards of $50K!!

Well its been a while since I last posted. I changed out he ECM still no spark. I checked auto shut off relay good. It had been setting for about 5 months. I found an in line fuse in the wireing harness up next to firewall. Changed it out. I'm running again.

Too bad you can't return that ECM that you didn't need. I had no idea there's a fuse for the spark. I wonder if my van has that.
