Trying to figure out why the van shakes and looses power like not getting enough gas but only when the tank gets to 1/2, fill it up and runs like new again.

Never run out of gas but have been told it is the fuel pump, but why does it run like new when its above 1/2 tank

At a 1/2 tank and above the pump is submerged in the fuel. The fuel acts as a heat sink allowing the pump to run much cooler. If a worn out pump is allowed to heat up...it acts up.
