When I start going in drive, you can hear a loud tinging(sounds like the drive shaft is hitting the exaust pipes, but its not) it tings to the speed of the engine when I give it gas in drive. Then it shifts to second at about 20 mph, shifts to 3rd around 30 Mph. Then it sounds like Im going 70 @ 50 mph.
Please tell me the bands need adjusted and I don't need a rebuild...
or is it something else?
Thanks for the help in advance.......

I'm no expert, but that last time I had something like that happen the clutches were out of it and it needed a rebuild. Of course, that was a TH400, but I figure at that age they are all close to the same in operation.
Good luck, bro!

Are you sure it is in the trans and not the rear end? Does it shift hard or smoothly and is it a consistent shift? Does it sound like it is slipping at all? Does it make any unusual noises when it is in neutral and you rev up the motor a little? Mopar trans are known to act weird when they are low on fluid as well.

It shifts really smoothly, almost so smooth you cant hear/feel it. My friend was outside of the truck and he said it sounds like its comin from behind the tranny, where it connect do the drive shaft. In neutral it sounds fine... I checked the fluid in neutral several times and it was fine. But i'll check the sound in neutral when I rev again...

Sounds like you may have a u-joint going (gone) bad. With the truck off, jack the rear end up and put the truck in neutral. Then rotate the rear wheels, you may have to get someone to help spin both wheels in the same direction, while they are spinning listen for any weird noises. You can also do a check check before jacking it up, just crawl underneath and try to rotate the drive shaft back and forth, if it is really loose change the u-joint.

I just went out and warmed it up, in neutral when reved, no strange noises, nor in park.
It shifts through all gears fine, in reverse it is totally normal, no sounds when driving.
Would a bad u-joint make it shift too quickly?
and thanks for all of your help so far!
I'll try what you said...
I went and tried to turn the drive shaft, it didnt seem loose
I'll jack er up now....

No, the U-joint wouldn't make it shift sooner, I was saying the U-joint because of the noise you were hearing. So the only time you can hear the noise is when the truck is in drive and moving forward correct? No noise when moving in reverse? If that is correct it sounds like you have something loose inside the trans. When is the last time you did a filter and fluid change on it? Most tranny's have a slipping issue before they go out, you may want to consider taking it up to a shop and have them take a listen do it and then take it for a test drive with you.

yea, the only time I hear it is in drive, 1st or 2nd, moving forward.
No sound driving in reverse.
It has been awhile on a filter change.
It really dosn't/didn't slip, it still goes through each gear
just too fast.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe you have a clutch pack going out, it is hard to say with being able to hear and see it.... I would take it up to a shop and see what they have to say about it

I think I located the sound...
Is there any way that the bearings between the front tube
and the yoke on the front of the driveshaft(rear tube)
can go out and cause everything to work fine EXCEPT for the drive shaft dosn't "catch" all the way causing the tranny to go through all of the gears too fast?
P.S I'm going to the shop Wed. morning and I'm trying not to get bent over by having them tell me I need a rebuild...

The tinging sound is strong in first gear then quiets down quite a bit when momentem is built up in 2nd and 3rd. Its like the drive shaft isn't getting
turned fast enough,(could it be worn splines?) but not from the transmission slipping. It still geos through all gears, just too quickly. Reverse is totally normal.

Travis,
You could have a stuck valve somewhere in the valve body of the tranny. I know that when I once installed a valve piston the worng way :o in a 904, it did the opposite: it shifted 'WAY too late! The valve body is the area I suspect when I hear about such a symptom.
The "tinging" sounds more "external" to me, such as in the driveline. Is it accompanied by any vibration? What you need to do is to hire Robert DeNiro to hang upside down beneath the truck while you drive it (ala "Cape Fear") and watch/listen to see what is happening. ;)
Good luck.

The tinging sound could be the heat shield on your cat(s).

Well I took her to the shop...
ended up, a combo of my center bearing, and the u-joint gone bad,
I still don't understand how that made the tranny go through all gears too fast.
Im just glad I dont need a rebuild...
Thanks for all the help!

Not sure either! Maybe the bad center bearing was dragging causing a false load on the trans causing the pressure to be higher then normal and thus causing it to shift earlier!
Glad to hear it is a easy fix though....

You may have blockage in the cooler lines. Not enough of one to cause obvious issues but just enough to make the tranny shift too soon. Also check you cooling fan clutch, as odd as that seems and how little it has to do with the trans. but unless you have a tach. or along those lines how do you know if it is really revving up. I have worked on several vehicles (my 85 B250 being one of them) that the cooling fan over revving due to a bad clutch makes it sound like the motor is over revving when in fact it isn't.
