Has anyone tried to use LED's to replace the bulbs in the turn signal/marker lamps? If so, what size is used. I'm pretty sure I can find them if I know the size.

If there is already a thread for this subject then please feel free to direct me to it. I don't want to make it prety so much as visible and they don't draw as much power.

Just curious....

Thanks!

1979D100,

There is more to it than just twisting in the LED bulb itself. I seem to remember the need to use a bulb the same color as the lens, the need for some sort of resistor (I think) to reconcile the flasher function and difficulty fitting some of the larger, brighter bulbs within the confines of the tail light units on some vehicles. Oh, and the good bulbs are VERY costly.

I briefly considered such a conversion for my Jeep to increase bulb brightness and response, but it seemed like too much hassle and too much money. Like earlier Dodges (such as my '72), the Jeep has separate bulbs for running lamp and stop/turn lamp. I can't recall whether that was an asset or a drawback when making such a conversion, but I know that some of the places which sell the bulbs on the internet have an "info page" which will walk you through it.

Please let us all know how it goes if you decide to proceed!

Jeff

I used Blue LED's on all cluster lamps. My blinker lamps flash bright blue. You could use Green to keep original color.

Here is link where I got LED's

These are one way lamps so if they do not work, take them out and turn 180. Get the Four Point LED Light 194.

I've had these for about two years now and they work fine. I used the WLED-x5 LED to light the gauges and the WLED-x6 LED for everything else.

Thanks, guys! bherder, how well do they work in your tail lights? Did you use the same color as the lense?

I was going to replace all the bulbs on the truck next week anyway. I may just order these. I hate dim lights. I was in municipal law enforcement for 11+ years with most of that time spent as a traffic officer and accident investigator. I don't want to get hit because someone didn't see my brake lights.

I went to both of the sites you guys gave the links for and bookmarked them....really appreciate your help!

You know, I never thought about changing the color scheme....I just focused in on the exterior and never thought about the interior lights.

Man, I love this site.....

I've only used them on my dash, but have seen other rigs with then in their tail lights... they are really really bright. It's very hard NOT to notice them...

I saw the kit that you used on your dash and I really like the way that looks. It was priced very reasonably, too.

Here's a lighting expert that's also a Mopar guy. He posts often on: www.slantsix.org

Thanks for the link, GHS. I have visited Stern's site and contacted him by e-mail. I didn't see any LED info on the site, but one would suppose that he would have a better handle on this subject than most. If there is in fact an "easy button" for LED exterior lighting, I would love to use it and make my vehicles more visible to the traffic around me!

As a "detail freak", I was especially inpressed with Stern's schematic showing how simple it is to turn side marker lights into flashers. I plan to make this conversion to the front side markers on my '78 D-150 ASAP.

I just sent him an email myself. I prefer bright tail lamps but don't want to melt either the wiring OR my lenses!!!
